Is there such a thing as a female usb to 5 pin midi out adapter?
I am curious if such a product exists that can convert a midi controller or keyboard with only a usb out to a 5pin midi out to hook up to analog gear with no usb.
I’ve seen the Kenton option but it’s bulky and overpriced.
Ideally im seeking an adapter if that’s a feasible option.
If something like this isn’t available I think there would be a market for people who would want this product.
Currently I’m using an interface and a hub + iOS to achieve this but for the project I’m working on that’s not the route to go.
I’m trying to use a cme xkey 25 because of its size and after touch features paired with a compact Commodore 64 midi module. The unit will be all cased together when completed.
Thanks for your assistance !

Small, cheaper than kenton (the time I check for it) and usb hub enabled.
Yes, CME WIDI X8. Doubles as a wireless interface.
I don't know of an adapter sized one. Maybe you could put one together if you're handy. http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host-midi. I've never built one but most of the DIY talk I've seen recently seems to revolve around that board.
They also make a kenton/KMI sized one for about half the price. Not sure if there are feature differences though. http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-midi-converter
I bought the Roland usb to midi cable
UM-one mk2
The OP needs something to work without computer involve (includding iDevice) so a simple usb to midi cable isn’t going to work as solution.
USB keys to 5 pin midi device?
It’s what the title says...
I’m interested in something along the lines of this above, but a 5pin midi not a ps2
Miditech USB MIDI Host is even cheaper than the Mode Machines Cerebel. It also has both MIDI in and out while the Cerebel only has MIDI out. Good to have if your keyboard has some kind of parameter feedback you want to use, or if you want to use other USB MIDI equipment too.
I don't think a thumb-sized adapter exists except one day some chinese engineer will develop a compact solution.
This one looks small. No experience with it. https://www.excelvalley.com/product/usb-midi-host-module/
Yup, syrupcode brang this.
We understood the need but the kind of adapter you post isn’t really comparable at electronic side, just eclosure.
To achieve what you want is required a translator chip which in the best case is smd package like syrupcode pointed. Aside of that usb and midi din connectors also are bulk. In the ps2/usb adaptor is only a matter of connector being those interchangeable due same protocol rear them afaik. Just pin one to one... not the same case between midi din and midi usb which the device you plug in the usb side must be class compliant (driverless) so the translator chip includes the midi messaging protocol inside in addition to the host cappability to hear the incoming messages from that device.
It could be possible to minimize these connectors with some adaptation like vestax did using ps2 connectors and dedicated cables and small usb connectors but these will bring more issues than solutions due to people trying to connect keyboards or usb in wrong way...
Understanding the differences between host and endpoint in usb protocol is a must to understand the answers and differences between a simple midi to usb from kenton-like boxes/dongles.
Hope it helps.
Like the new name! Better for my day job.
Good stuff. Also, USB is delightfully speedy. MIDI runs at War Game rates. You can't throttle without intermediate processors.
There have been some recent tweaks to the midi spec that allows for faster transfer rates. I can imagine a future where this part is no longer relevant but still a bit hard to see the "class compliant USB Host" part getting small enough to be like that PS2 adapter. But then, I never really imagined the iPad either so I'll hold out hope.
Would love to see more devices like the new MPCs that include USB MIDI hosting natively. They get it for free (ish) because those devices house a desktop OS but considering the price of the components I linked to, it's not particularly crazy to imagine makers like Korg or Elektron providing USB MIDI host ports on their gear.
@syrupcore syrupcode is your hacker alter ego, isn’t?

Writting techie shit when I’m still sleepy has this wonderful things.
Call me doolbylobby, it will be justice
About usb host chips, the one you brang (or any new smd atmel) probably will be cappable of that (xbee has more power than usually release due these need hardcoders) so I can imagine smaller pcb size until be just more or less the connector but it will necessary?
Usb and wireless (wifi/bluetooth) have adopted the protocol (among other ubiquity ones like OSC and Alink) making things really link but the last 3 years seems modular synths (with scifi VC tech lol) are the trend. So nuts!
About embedding platforms I pointed some in recent post from the Raspberry pi explosion to things like bela.io and I expect Ableton/cycling74 and NI searching for partnershipping (or in house developing) own embed solutions due the actual Intel chips stagnation, apple going full ARM and don’t be friendly as platform (mfi? 30pins? F00ck uf! We have Lightning!
)
So I’m probably dreaming but my path to standalone (and become an oldie granpa) has started without looking back. I purchased an arranger and I’m going to learn it and forget about next iDevice. @AmpifyxNovation had a chance in arranger market gap but groovebox isn’t enough to make me keep my launchkey (let’s leave apart Lanchpad this time).
If a solution in standalone gear with Ableton features (includding open als projects from iOS) or even BM3 could implement als importing from other apps (like Blocs or Gadget) oh dear...
Meanwhile bang for buck and music on top. iOS is dawned for me...
