Little OT, best paint app for the iPad to paint like you are using a real canvas with real paint?

Yeah I should mention that I posted I was using a Pencil 53 I got for super cheap on a clearance rack. Thing is, it is pretty much no longer supported by the company and apps that did support it have dropped support. I use it with Adobe Sketch, but it doesn't pair with Adobe. So it is basically just a stylus at this point with no extra features working. Pretty annoying. Also, not sure if anyone mentioned but the new iPad does support pencil now.

However, as I have noticed, you are a contributor to the Reaktor community, so I bet before long you will want to be running some modular app like Audulus or stacking tracks in a DAW with multiple AUv3's and automation, etc. It doesn't take long before you start getting serious CPU hits, which messes up your workflow having to bounce to audio and loosing the ability to fiddle with dials when you are done with your track and you want to automate parameters in your synths, FM drums, etc. in order to add interest to your final mix. In light of that, really consider a maxed out pro -- or even a used pro from a local online buy and sell.

Is the main reason for this the chip or the amount of RAM, or both? Chipset seems in line with the pro. Wish it had 4 GB but 2 has worked out ok for me when I had my iPad Air 2 (which I threw in a dumpster at Death Valley a year ago)

if you want things to feel and look like oils or acrylic on canvas, then ArtRage is the app you are looking for.

thanks! That is what I'm looking for so appreciate the emphasis on this!

Is ArtRage universal? I can't tell from the description. It says an iPad version is available. Since I don't have my iPad yet, I don't know if it'll work on both. I hate the way you can't purchase an iPad app except on the device itself any more.

Trying out ArtRage on Mac. I love the feel of the painting. Very tactile even with a mouse!!

I think you should start a new topic and ask this question in the main discussion area because the amount of knowledge on this subject from everyone around here is huge. I have an iPad Mini 4 because I was replacing an iPod Touch as a portable interface to take my little homemade guitar to the beach with. When I bought it I did not know the depth of progress that had been made with iOS DAWs, that AUv3's existed, or that I could get my Reaktor fix with Audulus 3. If I were to do it again I would probably have gotten a Pro for the processing and also the special screen it has that works with the pencil. Then again, once you start heading down that road you can spend a lot money wanting lots of storage, etc (it adds up)... Also, sometimes it is best to buy a device like an iPad Pro a little late in the game, when all the nonsense has been worked out in the iOS and they are several models deep. If they would have made a pro the size of the mini 4 I would have definitely bought it instead.

  • I came here to say procreate, but I had forgotten about paintstormstudio. This does model brushes the way fractal design painter works.

PS. If you are a graphics junkie, check out Frax. It is made by Kai Krauss from the old days.

Ha. I looked him up recently, for no particular reason, and he was living in an amazing castle overlooking a german village. I guess the 80's treated him alright.

Back OT: For those interested, I like the Concepts app for sketching and drafting. It is to technical drawing what Procreate/ArtRage is to painting. Kind of quirky, but with some very clever tools.

  • +1 Procreate. Art Studio Pro and Adobe sketch both let you install photoshop brushes which is great. There is also an app called Art Set which emulates natural media pretty well.

The choice for drawing apps is like the choice you have for DAW apps. Just get one that meets your needs and love it, stick with it and get good at using it.

very good advice. I learned this the hardest way before I settled on Bitwig for my desktop DAW! Sure wish they'd come out with an iPad version! :)

    There is no perfect house.
    There is no perfect car.
    There is no perfect computer.
    There is no perfect phone.
    There is no perfect tablet.
There is no perfect app - just a better app

I use Cubasis along with Poison-202 but don't use Auria Pro or BM 3.

  • So... speaking of Procreate. I love how this little button mimics the ‘alt’ keyboard modifier for ‘eyedropper’ in Photoshop for picking colors.

I would love to see music apps (paticularly daws) implement more desktop like keyboard modifier styled shortcuts for things like selection, copying etc.
