ZOOM U-44

I'm almost there to purchase the U-44 but I do have a question concern that I hope someone can speak to as I'm really a music tech novice and am confused by what little I've been able to find online about this. I effectively have 3 items I want to get into and out of my iPad for solo live performance. I would ideally love to have something this compact attached to my mic stand (there's a holder I would get)

2 Guitars in one: a Fishman Piezo Powerbridge/Powerchip equipped Stratocaster with stereo output jack. I use a stereo Y cable which has TRS on one and and splits the magnetic pickups and the piezo into separate 1/4 TS plugs.

Sure Beta 58A (condenser) Mic

I want to route all three into my iPad for effects and vocal processing and looping (which I would control with footcontroller) and then have the processed and/or looped output from my iPad go into my Bose S1 PA.

My concern stems from the specs of only 1 Hi-Z input (not sure if that really matters/needed for my guitar or not). Also wondering if, in addition to the immediate inputs above, if I also wanted to plug in a keyboard or midi controller. I think I've read that if you get the 2 extra input attachment it cuts other things off?

Is this the device that can handle all that? Can someone please explain how I would setup the I/Os on it for this?

I would SO APPRECIATE a walk through or better - pictures - of how I could use this. Thanks in advance for any help.

It's a tall order regarding the walk through and pictures, so I'm not the one who's going to do that. But yes you can have 4 separate audio inputs. Check your Fishman Powerbridge... I would guess it probably has low impedance outputs... regular magnetic pickup guitars use high impedance. Your keyboard would be mono though... if you're using stereo for your guitar and a mic input for vocals. So most likely you could get the 4 audio inputs (if the Fishman thing works out), and MIDI in as well. The extra attachment for the 2 extra audio inputs only cuts off the digital inputs, not the original 2 analog inputs.

  • Be forewarned, in my experience the ipad is unpredictable and the cpu freaks out over effects processing + looping. You might try it through a laptop -- because you want to do it live. Maybe a maxed out iPad Pro with outboard effects pedals or something. If you can do the effects processing with hardware you can take a lot of heat off the CPU. I am constantly having to resample tracks from layered effects down to wav files in order to keep moving forward with production work. Maybe other people have no problems -- but I would advise you not to expect it run smooth live, especially if you are new to music technology as you say above. On top of that you want to do solo performance, so you will probably want drum tracks and synths -- if not right away, soon enough.

That being said something like the Zoom-U44 would work with a laptop or an iPad.

I would generally agree with @futureaztec regarding CPU usage... it depends how much processing you are asking of your iPad... and how low latency you want (for live guitar performance I've found I can tolerate up to 10ms latency overall). With low latency, just a few heavy apps can eat up all your processing. ie. for a live-performance-worthy setup, I've found the bottleneck to be the iPad, not the interface.

THx for comments so far (more perspectives certainly welcome and appreciated). Looks like it should handle inputs. If I understand:

    • Mag pickups into Hi-Z input
    • Condenser mic into other input (phantom power on)
    • Fishman Piezo into one of the attachment inputs.

All can be independently leveled and then processed and/or looped and/or mixed in the iPad (usb/cck) or laptop (usb).

Do I have all this right?

How about the last part? Whether from
iPad or laptop... how does the live processed and/or looped sound get from iPad/laptop out and to my Bose S1 Pro PA in a solid way?

  • The interface (in this case the ZoomU44) takes care of the outputs as well. Up to 4 outputs RCA connectors OR 2 outputs 1/4" connections. Headphone out also of course,
