the Ampeg SVT plus 8x10 'fridge' cabinet is still a classic
From a technical viewpoint it's a piece of crap, but it just works right with anything from Punk to Jazz.
If you can lift it, that is...
righty right, and it's for the bigger stages...
it's difficult to emulate for it's mid range filter, most of the distortion is silicon based (a pair of diodes) plus a tube stage - and the typical (rock)sound originates from overloaded speakers running beyond specs.
The classic....back breaker
I used to play an SWR baby baby blue 1x10 combo for just about any gig a few years ago. It sounded great and was very loud even though I think it was only 160W RMS. I didn't play much rock, though. But with a D.I. out one can always go through the PA and monitors for more volume. I also got a GK 1x12 combo, MB150, which also sounds great and is super compact. I use that one for small gigs now. It sounds especially great with the double bass. For everything else I got myself a used TC Electronic RH750 head (750 Watts), an SWR Golight jr. (2x10+tweeter, 400W, 8Ohm) and an SWR Golight (1x12 + tweeter, 350W, 8Ohm), which makes for a very flexible high power and excellent sounding rig that can do anything I want, and can have 3 different presets saved, which is very cool. That's my favourite set up now and I bring it whenever it's not a problem space wise. Of course all that stuff costs more than the OP wants to spend, even used, but I can definitely recommend all that gear, it's great stuff. If there's a great deal for some of that stuff on eBay or craig's list, I would suggest to give it a go. Of course it's also a matter of taste, style, genre etc, so YMMV. Just thought as a bass player I'd add my 2ct...
Dude, you got me all droolin’ over here.
Of course, another solution to that issue is to have the guitarists turn down....if they refuse, just call the next tune and tell them "wait a second, here's your sheet music..." Then you'll definitely hear your bass.
Funny that you're into all the SWR stuff - my previous rig was all vintage SWR. I had a Workingman's 12 combo for small gigs and an old SM-400 paired with either a Goliath II (4x10) or a Goliath Jr. II (2x10). It sounded absolutely massive but it just broke my back too much. Great stuff, though - glad to know others are still keeping the old SWR dream alive.
I've never had luck playing rock music with less than 200W. Right now, I'm running 200W thru two 12" cabs, and barely keeping up with one other guitar player and a drummer.
Yeah, I love my SWR gear, such a shame Fender swallowed and destroyed them. And the Golights are neodyne, so pretty light weight, by the way. I couldn't be bothered lugging the Goliaths around, too heavy...
I went used - $150 for a Behringer BX4210A. So far, it seems to fit the bill.
There ya go. Report back after you get to take her out for a test drive with the band.
Will do. I'm sure its more than enough to get the cops after me here in the condo!
Excellent. That looks like a sweet setup. Can’t beat that price, either.
Yeah....Craigslist. Guy just joined the Army and couldn't fit it into his duffle bag
I got lucky...a decent setup and didn't get killed picking up from a stranger.
Excellent, those bass amps sound pretty good as long as they stay working, but if you take care of it that should be the case. Nice bass from Rondo as well.
@mrufino1 - I've a lot of good luck with Rondo. Value-wise they're tough to beat.
I've heard nothing but good things about the SX basses, and the options available for the price are just stupid. That'd be the first place I'd go if I wanted a new bass to customize or something...
I had an sx shortscale neck at one point that was very nice. Agreed, rondo is great. They used to be very close to where I am in NJ but I never went there. Now I wish I had....
I thought they used to be in NJ. I’m in NJ now (working away from home), and planned on paying them a visit, but they had already moved.
New Jersey, China maybe....
I'm kidding - I didn't know that Rondo was based in NJ. Where did they move their HQ to?
I think most of their guitars are from S. Korea, China, Indonesia. In any case, I'm a fan. The Agile line is particularly nice.
Rondo is now in New Hampshire, run by the son Kurt as a mail order only business.
Sorry you got sent here to work, I'm desperate to leave!!!
Ha! I was enjoying it until winter set in. Missing Atlanta, but spring should be here soon!
