What's a good violin brand?

I’m thinking about signing up for violin class. My online girlfriend loves classical music and always wanted to date a musician so, I was thinking of learning the violin before we meet up for the first time in an upcoming international dating social event in a couple of months. I’ve already researched a few good music schools or local instructors who are willing to come over to my place for the lessons but the only problem is, I don’t know squat about buying a violin myself. I could always ask the clerks at the music shop but I’m afraid they might sales-talk to me on getting the expensive but fragile one. I want something I can use and can withstand my noob playing for a few months and not break on me. Nothing grand but nothing too local is what I’m looking for. Musicians out here, please help me out.

  • I’ve heard Stradivaris are ok

Sorry I just couhelp myself. I hope you find a good piece of woodwork & sit down and watch “the Red Violin”

  • Unless you are serious and/or are flush with cash, I recommend renting one. If you rent an expensive one, get insurance on it as well, especially if you are taking it on the road.

  • Electric or acoustic? Acoustic is always going to be a crapshoot buying sight unseen, like any acoustic instrument. Especially at the low end.

  • Rent a Yamaha until you're committed to it. Mission accomplished. If, for some reason, renting instruments gives you a mental allergic reaction, buy a violin made in China from sharmusic.com. Or be even cooler and play an "endangered" instrument and pick up a viola, instead.

    Wait... what?

  • Hi, professional violinist here. Start with a rental for a year or so, then buy, if you feel like you've stuck with it.

The Yamahas are fine, but a local specialty shop may have recommendations for instruments that have been made by hand.

You don't need a violin, you need a therapist. However, If impressing girls with your musical skills is the direction your going in, i have heard that learning a few chords on the guitar can be quite effective. It worked for Elvis & The Beatles, maybe it could work for you.........

  • Search for a synth girl. I heard they like neon lights. :)
Nah´if that is going to be a true love story it might be worth the work.
But of course today we shouldn´t forget the dark side of net-love and music is something you should do for yourself and not only to impress others or get the love.
I guess also learning the violin take some years if you are not an outstanding talent.
However, is that really serious i wish you all the best!

  • You could try this trick I learned from an old Tom and Jerry cartoon. Tom was trying to impress a girl kitty by singing an old cowboy song while strumming a guitar. The thing is, cats can’t do those things. So Tom had a phonograph around the corner, out of sight of the girl kitty, and played a record while pretending to actually sing and play.
Man, cats are so smart. :p

  • So Mr. “JackBlank”, who just joined the group and this is his first post, wants to “learn violin in a couple of month to impress his girlfriend.” Riiiiiight.

Might I suggest you start with kazoo. I hear Stradivarius is a good brand of kazoo. Maybe you can find a good deal on a student model on ebay.

  • Maybe you can order one of these?

You’re right but don’t forget the importance of on the fly interpretation..it can often smooth out occasional sloppy or boring technique......

Very nice although I think it could use a little touch of Brusfri to clean up the audio other than that amazing stuff there! :D

  • This should do the trick.

I am reminded of that scene in "The Office" where Michael is advised that girls are impressed by men in finance, so he tells the next girl he's a bank teller.
