Help me sort out my live rig.

I have two iPads, a 2017 12.9 Pro and an Air. I use a Launchkey 49 with the Pro, running AUM and usually about five apps. The Air is used mainly for groove apps such as DrumJam.

I'd like to add a small keyboard to the Air for triggering and controlling some sounds, and already have a Korg Microkey. But it has no controls, so I was thinking of adding a Launch Control, Arturia Beatstep, or Nanocontrol 2 in with that. But of course that would mean also needing a hub, so yet more wires to plug and unplug at the gig.

A Launch Control would cost me around $90 Cdn, the Arturia $130, and the Nano around $100. Would I better off just getting a Launchkey Mini at $140? Except for the cheap feel of the keys I quite like my Launchkey49.

Thanks in advance!

If you don’t really need a second controller, you could use your existing controller with something like Midifire to control both. You should be able to keep your Pro as is and connect to the Air using Bluetooth Midi, through Midifire, to control it remotely with the KB controller connected to your Pro.

If you are interested in this type of setup, I suggest you inquire about it on the Midifie forum or contact the dev. At least make sure your Air is supported for Bluetooth Midi, as I am not sure about that, but maybe you know.

Also ask how reliable Bluetooth Midi would be in your live scenario. It may not be reliable enough for high-stakes gigs.

Cool, thanks for the idea. My Air runs Bluetooth LE, as I sometimes use my BlueBoard with it. I'll look into things as you suggest.

I realized, after my first post, that I really need to determine what I want to do with a controller for the Air. Do I just want knobs for controlling things, or so I also need some keys? In addition to the percussion apps I do sometimes have bs-16i running on it, mostly for sound effects, but those could be triggered by pads as easily as by keys. Hmm...

    Thanks again!
