Anyone can explain me Wotja subscription plan ?
I was considering the six months subscribtion for 6 or 7 bucks but now it is 2 bucks EACH MONTH... Correct me if I'm wrong but it's double the price isnt't it ? Is that fair to increase the price so drastically ? I was so angry I bought Refraktions instead !
Comments
$1.99/month is not as expensive as a Starbucks latte, but as far as I know (I could be wrong), the subscription itself comes with no extra services like cloud storage, nor a constantly updated library of assets/samples to use, nor a regularly updated collection of high-quality plugins, nor anything of that sort. I other words, it’s not worth it at all. They DO have Wotja 2018 (the paid for version) at $14.99, and you can use that as long as you want before the next iOS update ruins it (or you get Wotja 2019 for another $14.99). I mean, if Intermorphic offered a $3.99/month subscription tier AND had at least 100GB cloud storage and/or a constantly updated sound library, I’d be tempted to dive in.
It’s why I subscribed to Auxy (constantly updated sound library), and Celsys FINALLY got their heads screwed on straight and offer a 100GB multiplatform cloud storage for Clip Studio Paint EX (the cloud storage which, as I told the morons there, would get me on board with their subscription).
So, that said, up to you what you wish to subscribe to or not. Gotta decide what’s best for you mate. Frankly, Refraktions is more user-friendly and nicer to use.
I'm pretty sure that if you buy Wotja 2018 it remains functional after the next yearly iteration is available, you just won't receive anymore updates or the new functionality...........
I did look into it all, but decided it probably wasn't for me, even though i have messed about with some of their software about a million years ago..........it all seems a bit convoluted to get my head around these days......pretty niche, in a very niche.....er......niche.... (apologies)
I think the Wotja 2018 standalone is worth it at that price.
I bought the 2017 and haven't updated yet. Still works well and won't update until I see something major worth updating for.
I would never do a subscription though. I have too many apps and never stick with one to justify it.
It's much deeper than Refractions, has some interface annoyances but has a great generative engine.
I believe the one time price lowers as less time remains in the year. In January it is the most expensive, in December the cheapest. Support runs out at the end of the year. This is not referring to the subscription pricing.
I believe this is how it was introduced when the app was released, but maybe they changed it. Anyway, there is a free version to see if it is worth the price to you.
I tried the Demo (free version) but i couldn't asses it's usefulness because you only get three minutes of continuous audio before it cuts out......for generative music production this is a blink of an eye! Did i miss something, or have they changed it? This app definitely piqued my interest, but couldn't really find a way in to it........also, disappointing to hear that 2017 is now broken.......... anyone confirm that? It would make buying 2018 pretty pointless, and i would never subscribe to an app.....ever.....
As I understand it, the idea was to make the subscriptions simultaneously simpler and more flexible. IIRC it was $7.99 for 6 months, and it's now $1.79 for one month – so it does work out about a third more if you stick with it ($10.74 over six months), but it's much less of a commitment to try it for a bit and see whether it's for you. They also upped the play time in the basic tier to 8 hours, which used to be an additional sub tier. You can also cancel and resubscribe at a later date, which is what they're envisaging for the new infinite play tier where people will just subscribe for the duration of the particular installation or performance. Your files will all still be there in the free version, just not as fully editable or long-playing. Most of this comes from user feedback (not mine; I think if anything it's vastly underpriced for what it's worth to me), to which they've been very responsive. They're aware it's not for everyone, but the new model makes it much easier to dabble in. But if you're happy with Refraktions, no reason not to stick with that; I'm not a huge fan of the Enoesque plinking that dominates Wotja's built-in templates, so I don't particularly rate it for instant gratification. (It's the deep control where it comes into its own.)
I do agree it's been a while since we had a significant new bank of onboard patches, though. The synth engine is actually pretty fantastic (subtractive, FM, granular, and basic wavetable in one modular network), but it's a bit Audulusy for normal human use compared with just cheating by using the generative engine on its own to drive other apps over MIDI. For what it's worth, though, I don't think this is one of the apps that would particularly benefit from cloud storage; the files are tiny, and can be exported or e-mailed as plain text anyway.
What broke in the 2017 version of Wotja? I just tried mine and it seems to work fine. I changed a bunch of parameters, worked fine. Loaded Wotja in AUM as generator, worked fine. Created a new project and imported my own samples in.. then got a generative thing going, and again it worked fine. I'm running the lastest iOS though.
I didn't mess with any of the cut-up text stuff, but the core functionality all seemed to work as well as it did the last time I played with it. Can't find anything "broken".
If the yearly version remains working for perpetuity., then it seems like good value. I'm interested again now. Can't see that i would ever need more functionality than it already has. In fact it probably has more than i would either need, or get my head around for several lifetimes!
I haven't noticed any problems with Wotja 2017 last I tried with AUM but I just use the midi from Wotja not internal sounds.
Noatikl, and then Wotja, used to be my preferred tools, at the heart of my setup (audio + several midi-lanes). Great concept, very, very deep. With Wotja 2018 though, they suddenly shortened the playtime, and told me (once I had this wondering question in their forum), I will have to buy a subscription tier to expand my playtime...(all this after years of correspondence with the guys through their forum, in which I made it quite clear, that a subscription will not keep me as a customer at all...). Of course, why would they care about this one guy, who has a hangup about subscriptions, right? I understand that. But to change this without a word in the Appstore just isn‘t right in my opinion, and I chose to not buy their stuff anymore. Sad, really, but for my kind of experimental setup I need Apps running for long amounts of time, without limits. What kind of an idea is this, anyway, to time-restrict App-usage? I don‘t like it, and I find my way around ideas such as this.
My 0,2 c.
Cheers, t
Astonishing that these jokers are still in the game. Mugs wanted.
Having MUCH more fun with Refraktions.
Well, in fairness, they did care. As soon as you complained, they raised the default playtime on the basic unlocked tier to 4 hours, and then to 8. And it's simply not true to say there was nothing about it in the app store; as they said in their original reply at https://forum.intermorphic.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=2408, it had been there for six months; you just didn't notice. (I don't mean that as a rebuke, and did post in your support.) They acted swiftly and positively on your feedback, and all users have benefited. I was actually pretty impressed.
agree - I have never heard (or made) anything inspiring from it.
For the price of one less, shop-bought, mug of coffee per month, I decided to give it a try. It's interface is still a little unfortunate but I still think it produces quite musical results versus the robotic randomness of other tools. The fact that they have managed to keep their ship afloat, after all these years is to their credit.
(This fell into a moderation abyss this morning, which I think must have been a glitch – reposting on the assumption it's just lost in transit.)
Well, in fairness, they did care. As soon as you complained, they raised the default playtime on the basic unlocked tier to 4 hours, and then to 8; same for the standalone version, which I think is what you use? A sub for >8 hours doesn't seem unreasonable to me, particularly as they've priced it in the expectation that users will only cough up the $1.79 when they actually need it; I think the assumption is that anyone needing that length of playtime will be a pretty serious user who wouldn't settle for Refraktions or whatever. At any rate it's not true to say there was nothing about it in the app store; as Intermorphic said in their original reply at https://forum.intermorphic.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=2408, it had been there for six months and you just didn't notice. (I don't mean that as a rebuke, and did post in your support.) They acted swiftly and positively on your feedback, and all users have benefited. I was actually pretty impressed, as I have been with the retention of a non-sub version alongside the subscription model. They're really trying as hard as anyone reasonably can to please everyone – which isn't to say they're actually going to.
I bought Noatikl, then a few weeks later it disappeared and was replaced with Wotcha, or whatever it’s called.
Never really used it, mainly down to the interface and almost instant abandonment. Shame as it’s the sort of thing I could get into.
Yeah, but at the same time, they should offer the same exact functions in the paid version as they do in the subscription version. Not even sure Intermorphic read these boards, but what they SHOULD add as an incentive for the subscription version isn’t unlimited time but rather multiplatform cloud storage for projects. Leave that out of the paid version, have it in the subscription version so it’s like paying for the app AND a virtual storage unit for your goods. It justifies the recurring charges.
Not sure there'd be much demand for that – the files are so tiny, and the plain-text encoding makes them very transportable. But I do miss the old file format's ability to be encoded as a URL or a tweet; it was a great way of sharing files, particularly back when there was a free player-only version. I don't know that it's something I'd pay for, and only a handful of people used it a lot, but the Twitter feed was a shop window for user compositions that's rather missing in the current iteration.
I thought it uses audio files too. What are those mixtikl soundpacks, just presets?
Oh, you're right – I was thinking JW meant cloud storage for the .wotja files, but of course you can also import soundfonts and the like to use in them. Currently they use iCloud for that, which seems adequate for purpose; I suppose if you were a really massive user of your own custom soundpaks it might start to eat into your storage, but you'd need to be using a lot.
And also available for Android and Windows, which the earlier Wotja versions weren't.
[deleted duplicate of later post that had gone missing in moderation - nothing to see here]
And Wotja X is subscription-only. I saw their timeline, and Wotja 2018 is the last paid version it seems (unless they release a paid version of Wotja X).
Well, I will say it one last time (because it’s tiring to have to explain simple things many times over):
There was a new version of FULL Wotja in the Appstore this January, which I bought. When, in the middle of my session, Wotja stopped playing to tell me: „your playtime is up“, I posted in their forums inquiring about this. Pete told me, I‘ll have to pay again for longer playtimes (as a subscription, on top!), and anyways, I could just press play again, each time after an hour... . Now, just for a moment, imagine your personal hero on stage, suddenly quiet with no sound, until he/she presses „play“ again..., I don‘t think so!
When I pay for a FULL version, I do expect to have a FULL version at my disposal, cause thats why I chose FULL versus subscription in the first place, wouldn‘t you?
Actually, my decision to stop using Wotja came with not wanting to subscribe, and feeling forced to do so, anyways. Also, I don‘t think I want to use any FULL App, which stops playing after whatever interval... , especially when the intervals get switched from version to version. When they changed it back, it was too late for me, I already felt „cheated“, and that‘s all it took to look elsewhere, I’ve just lost trust, because I don’t want to have to be aware of any possible changes under the hood from version to version, which might undermine my way of work.
RESTRICTED PLAYTIME, REALLY?
Thanks for listening, end of rant, no hard feelings, cheers, over and out, t
I think the idea is to have Wotja X 2019 as well; they mentioned the other day that the annual versions are a majority of their user base.
