Roland Sound Canvas app... does it run in the background now?
thought about picking it up and saw a review some time ago that mentioned it wouldn't run in the background.
Comments
It'll run in the background if you launch it from a host such as AudioBus.
To be honest Roland should give it some care. It's quite tricky to get up and running as IAA.
(The app needs to be launched first or the connection will most likely fail if a host launches it).
I've had no luck with getting a response from Roland support regarding iOS Sound Canvas...
thanks Samu, I'm interested in using it only as an external sound module triggered by a hardware sequencer so no need for Iaa but I would like to also run other synths in stand alone at the same time so need it to run in the back ground.
In that case the only solution here to 'force' background audio is to host them in AudioBus.
There is a 'Background Play' option in iOS Sound Canvas but to me it feels a bit 'broken'.
Usually if I start the app first and connect other apps to it.
Even though the midi port is visible to other apps it doesn't respond to the midi unless I switch to the app first.
After that 'switch' it continues to respond until it somehow 'times out' and goes back to sleep (when in background) and in order to wake it again I need to switch to the app...
I don't know but somehow it feels that the iOS Sound Canvas was 'rushed out' and didn't get proper quality assurance which is a shame if it represented a 'serious' iOS attempt from Roland...
Not complaining, but never really felt I got my use out of Sound Canvas and have always presumed (wrongly it seems) that Roland would come back around and spiff it up some.....
Yes I wish they would give it some love, there are some great sounds in there but it isn’t the friendliest of apps to use.
I always end up setting the part-level to max and reverb to 0 and sample the sounds into BM3.
There are plenty of nice sounds to be found even though they can feel a bit dated at times
(Most of the MC-303 sounds can be found in the iOS Sound Canvas).
It’s best to use it for samples.
It works perfectly fine for my usage... Just load it up, open a MIDI sequencer and create away, simple as can be. I have “Background Play” and “Auto Sleep Cancel” enabled and haven’t experienced the issues Samu mentioned.
I am intimately familiar with the hardware versions having owned 2, so the interface isn’t an issue for me. There are extra features that require CCs (or SysEx in some cases) to activate, so it’s worth reading the original manual & MIDI spec.
The app does deserve to at least be brought up to parity with the desktop version though, which has more of a GUI for some of the deeper parameter editing (particularly the insert effects).
thanks for the input good people, I miss those sounds but want to make sure the app is worth droppin a couple of dimes on it
