Quillian's Lament - Orchestral-ish piece using Gadget

Here it is - all done in Korg Gadget on an iPad Pro, other than the 2 cymbal swells. Mixing and mastering was done in Cakewalk Sonar using Izotope Ozone 7 Elements. Gadgets used were Salzburg, Changmai, Madrid, Glasgow for the Kapro Strings, and Marseille. Hope you all enjoy!

  • Sounds awesome....a great composition......nice dynamics too :)

  • Very nice!

  • Very nice. I have Gadget but I never could grasp or appreciate it. I am inspired because of your composition
and will begin something later today. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • @Lowetone, that's awesome to hear! That was actually one of my hopes in sharing this, that someone who had let Gadget collect the proverbial dust would give it another try and maybe use it a little differently than perhaps intended. And thanks to all for the kind words!

  • Thanks for sharing that. Wish I knew how to play real instruments so that I could do orchestral-ish pieces myself!

There's definitely a lot of people that underestimate what Gadget can do (assuming you spend $$$ on all the IAPs, of course!), or think it can only do one thing well.

  • Excellent.
Indeed a good demonstration of Gadget beyond the edm sound we mostly hear from it.

  • You ve done it.
    Take a bow @Joel75

  • This is an awesome track!! Great work :)

Enjoyed it very much! Loved that change of mood at 2:03 and the return back home.

    Thank you for sharing :)

  • @vitocorleone123, though I've played piano and guitar for years, I don't play any bowed string instruments, and I really don't think you need to be able to play any orchestral instruments to compose in that style. In fact, other than the 8 measure bridge where it was just the piano and strings, everything else in the piece was step-entered into Gadget. It would have been a lot quicker to just play the parts with a midi controller, but the point was to see if I could take an EDM oriented app, and an EDM style of composition (step entry), and create something decidedly not EDM. If you can create the idea, you can probably bring it to realization in Gadget, even if you can't physically play it.

  • @Joel75 You ought to put some description on your video so that other Korg Gadget users can find your piece in a search. This is top notch and if Korg had a credible social media team, this would deserve to go viral. A flawless cinematic piece of pop music.

  • Quality work, and really surprised me that you got this (mostly) out of Gadget.

  • Beautifully done @Joel75. I’m not familiar with Gadget so when you say “step entered” are you referring to the traditional step sequencer method?

  • Excellent, I think we should all go and sub too

  • A beautiful piece of music! And that it was done in Gadget defies the normal expectations of what can be done with it. You are clearly a talented guy!

  • Yes, nicely done. As a fellow non-EDM Gadget aficionado it's great to hear something fresh done in Gadget, but it's a really good piece regardless of what software is behind it.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Very nice. I never really understood why people think Gadget is limited to EDM or even "electronic" music. The sounds are there to do all kinds of music. The piano roll is pretty flexible, and while the Scenes paradigm isn't right for some things, a lot of music can be fit. Or at least Gadget can be a handy place to get some ideas down.

  • You all are incredibly kind and I'm very grateful for your taking the time to listen and reply. I'm sure I'll have some other things to say later, but just a couple of personal responses for now...

@Ben, by step entry I'm referring to manually entering the notes one by one into a grid which I set up in the piano roll. In this piece I set the grid to 16th note triplets and turned Quantize off. Also set velocities for every note.

@LucidMusicInc, I know so very little about YouTube other than I can upload from the video gallery on my iPad. There was a description box where I just put the fact that it was composed and arranged by me. Should I go and edit that description to add that it was done in Korg Gadget? Or do I need to add some tags? I agree it would be awesome if it was picked up when someone did a search for Gadget!

  • That is fantastic!
Undoubtedly, the most unGadget Gadget track I have ever heard (to me, that is a very good thing)
    Very nice work.

  • @lovadamusic, I totally agree. I think it gets the EDM label because many of the Gadgets are geared toward those types of sounds, and the step entry method is so easy in Gadget's piano roll. Being able to automate virtually any synth parameter is also a major plus for EDM. The only issue I really had with the Scenes system was the inability to sustain a sound across scenes, which affected the string line a couple of times. I also would have liked to be able to automate the master fader for a little drop and swell leading into the second verse. So I used my desktop DAW to do that in the mixing stage.

It's up to you. To show up in a search I think you'd have to modify the title and mention it in the video description. In my opinion it's worth mentioning as there is a growing audience of iOS musicians.

  • Great composition, and excellent use of Gadget. Like others that commented, I never saw Gadget as an EDM app; I've made a variety of tracks with Gadget from Jazzy stuff to Prog rock. I love the recent addition of the strings.

  • Even better than I was expecting, lol, and I’m a major Gadget head. :) I can’t wait to hear more from you. Cheers!

  • Thanks, @jwmmakerofmusic! It's tough to finish anything with 3 kids under the age of 5, and #4 coming in a couple of weeks, but I'm really encouraged to get some more out there. This is an awesome community.

  • Just wanted to drop a note thanking everyone who took the time to listen and comment. You all made my day, and then some! In particular, @mAxjUlien, I read your comment to my wife! I look forward to hearing a future Gadget submission from you. And @thesoundtestroom, it means a lot to me that you subscribed to my YouTube channel. I can't promise to be the most prolific uploader, but hopefully what I put out there will be pretty high quality. Hope everyone has a great night/day, wherever you may be!
