Can you explain sample and hold to me in one sentence? Like I'm a 5 year old? Thanks.

Interesting challenge. I’m pretty sure I could explain Sample & Hold to a 5 year old...but not in 1 sentence. It would take a good number of sentences, and I’d probably have to draw pictures too 😁

There is a graphic shaper module, where you can draw a curve and waveshape anything.

Fantastic! Finally a groovy alternative to Audulus. Thank you for this.

I have tried hard to get into Audulus, but it's just too damn scientific.

Idem. Drambo is as simple and/or as complicated as you want it to be. Ok, it ain't Figure but you can easily make a track with presets and never need to be bothered with all the modular malarky, albeit that is the part why some of us would have purchased the app in the first place. ;)

Don't get me wrong, there's something very appealing to me about the level of depth in Audulus. Kind of like playing with lego. But most of the time I just want to make music.

Exactly! I'm prepared to put time into building stuff only when the end goal is to safe them as presets to be recalled instantly when the idea strikes. Although sometimes messing with modules brings ideas about. ;)

I don't think so. Audulus is another type of app.

The flexibility, the control, the low-level that Audulus provides is far far away from Drambo.

Drambo is more like a little Reaktor. Audulus is more like.....Max/Msp

In the analogue world, a sample and hold module samples the voltage from a source signal. (usually white noise, which is effectively random voltages). It will hold the sampled voltage for a specified time(controlled by a clock) before sampling another voltage. These random voltages can then be used to control any other destination such as pitch or filter cutoff.

So the clock is steady (unless you modulate it with another S&H module) and the amplitude is random.

If you want to make the evil computer sound, modulate pitch with S&H.

a real world use of this would be for humanizing hi hats....use a pink or white noise as the source....send that through sample and hold, and then use the output from sample and hold to affect the pitch and/or length of a hi-hat sample. Each hat will then have slightly different pitch and length so will not sound so rigid.
you will have basically built a fake random value generator....you can use the speed of S&H to control how quick the value changes, and range (if it's available) to control the highest and lowest possible values.
There are many uses for this, this is just one example.

I use this exact trick on my kits in BM3 because it’s so dead simple to setup a modulation source. If you haven’t done this in BM3, give it a shot!

I've always thought of S&H as just a 'random' LFO to apply to something. Is it any more complicated than that in practical terms? Obvs the theory behind it is interesting.

  • Clocking S&H with a steady clock is virtually the same as downsampling (decimation).

That depends on the source you feed it, if the source isn’t random (noise) then the output won’t be random either...
It’s more like a stepper that steps what you feed into it.

But still not curous enough to do a deadmau5 masterclass.

It was, if i good remembet, in part where he talked about sound design, how it is important in edm, and how it is important to develop own sound, not just use same presets from well known banks ...as bad example he used NEXUS plugin (that is the short sewuence from Ad - he us plying Nexus preset with arpeggio melody) and talked about cases when people send to him some tracks for releasing on Mau5trap and he immediately identified some NEXUS preset used thousand times by other producers in other tracks.

So cardinal sin, which he was talking about, is using same synth presets, used already thousand times by other producers :-)

  • can we download drambo yet?

  • Holy crap. Checked in this morning to 60 some-odd new posts and got a little giddy.

Thanks for crushing my spirits with your pricing debates and Deadmau5 (or whatever) mocking. Now I'm going to cry into my coffee and write Drambo in bubble letters on my notebook cover.
