Air2 / iOS 11: Struggling.......Factory Reset?
Air 2 iOS 11 is really just.....
I don't know. Feels like a slow painful death lately.
I have many beta versions of apps but as a whole, it is just not holding up to anything.
I literally could have Circuit audio coming into AUM and into Audiobus to Loopy with like Groovebox and 4 AU effects.
And the Loopy circles start jerking.
Distortion.
Crackles.
It usually happens an hour in.
Then it becomes unusable unless reset.
Do you feel a factory reset would help clean it up and increase performance of the Air 2?
Thanks in advance.

thanks for sharing - I'm really happy I left my Air-2 in IOS 9.
best of luck that you can revitalze yours...
I don’t know if it would help or not, but...
On my Air 2 running 11.2.2, it seems that any session that goes on for too long ends in disaster. You at least get crackling, warning you of impending doom. My device just decides to cough up the home screen and pretend that it wasn’t just engaged in a music session.
I had crazy zombie shit happening the other day too. Severe crash happened, but even when I did the hardest of the hard reset, the apps were still showing on the running apps screen. Also, I had a random SilqEQ is recording show up, but I hadn’t used SilqEQ for over a week.
Logic seems to dictate that a fresh install would do you good. But if iOS is all jacked up, all bets are off. You would just fresh install a faulty iOS, right?
A factory reset would would probably help a lot........did mine in December, & started again from a completely clean slate, re-installing only the apps i use regularly one at a time.......runs smooth as silk, even though i bought it second hand off E-bay with a cracked screen over a year ago (Nov 2016)........... I put it in a fully enclosed case.....the crack is barely noticeable and it works fine............so , yes, like all computers, fresh installs definitely re-rejuvenate older devices.
(Ageing 16gig Air 2 latest OS)
Think I’ll reinstall mine. My Air 2 is definitely not a happy bunny at the moment.
I may as well, too, then. Can’t be the only one with a shit device.
Choosing which apps to re-install is quite therapeutic
Hmmm.
There have been some weird artifacts and freezes. Just figured it was the endgame. Id even made peace with it and started spending more time on the Surface Pro.
Blasphemy!
Can anyone who has issues list what there set up(apps is like)?
Maybe we can isolate a scenario that helps initiate this issue or problematic state.
I was using AUM, Audiobus, and Loopy when I had that horrendous crash the other day. I was loading and unloading apps more than usual, thinking that leaving them open was wasteful. I think loading and unloading apps may have destabilized my session.
The apps I was using were the usual suspects, Brambos, Moog, AudioDamage, etc. I only lately have been having serious issues. It’s been about 18 months since I got this Air 2 and started off clean. Might be time to refresh the whole thing.
Ive been running ios11.3 on mini2 and air2 for two weeks and Ive had a few IAA crashes in Aum (which easily could have happened on 10.3 too) but apart from that Im over the moon with ios11 and the air2. No slowdown on either devices that I have noticed. Good luck troubleshooting.
Runs SunVox, MTS, FL 12, Renoise and Bitwig.
And more top tier synths than I can count...
I would imagine Reason and VCV Rack would run well. Have you tried either of those?
I avoided 10 to avoid the 'incompatible' nags, so left it in 9.
But I updated several apps which of course contained modifications for 11.
Same here with AUM/IAA, no severe crashes but occasional crackles, mostly noticed when using guitar and bass with JamUp/Bias and fx apps. Annoying though because the iPad is my preferred recording device.
My Air 2 on iOS11 is still the heart of my development setup and I’m not noticing any slowness compared to previous iOS versions. So, yes, perhaps there’s indeed something off that a fresh install could fix...
The only thing I sometimes notice is dropouts when doing app switching. But I wouldn’t describe that as a general slowdown in normal use, and it’s a known bug. (And the whole point of AUv3 is not having to multitask a bunch of music apps anymore anyway).
Thanks man.

I hear you.
Have you seen my recent Reason posts.
Same deal here.
New MacBook using more and more.
I am already taking hard look at what is best for my future music making.
I love iOS flexibility but the lack of stability is frustrating any more.
I guess if I only use Apple and Roli apps with a Seaboard all my issues will melt away........(tongue firmly planted in teeth clenched mouth)
Some questions:
1) How much free storage does your device have now?
2) When was the last factory reset of your device?
3) Which method of factory resetting do you (plan to) use?
I was debating whether to update my iPad Air 1 from 9.3 to 11.3 but I probably shouldn't and should get a new iPad. If a lot of you are having problems with air 2 I would probably too. What do you suggest I do?
No problems with an Air 2 here. It does everything i need it to do, and i really like it. However, if i was upgrading today from an Air 1 and i could afford a new iPad i would get the iPad 9.7in (2018.)
My Air 2, latest IOS works without problems. I do not use CPU heavy synths though. Just my usual combo of AB2, Loopy, Turnado, VoiceRack, ToneStack, AUM and Samplr.
BM3 is crash-tastic on my 10.5 Pro when using certain synths and fx, Audio Damage seem a repeat problem, especially when reloading sessions, leaves me howling to the moon.
BM3 is unstable for me when I start using the timeline, otherwise it’s performance-level solid.
Everything running well for me apart from Model D uses 10-20x more processor power than any other app - first time I’ve felt the need for more power!
My Air2 was upgraded to iOS 11 right after that came out. It was virtually trouble free until just recently. Yeah, I had the same crackle issues that everyone has, but for some reason it seemed not as bad as some people with pro models.
I think I am going to fresh install the OS. The only way I know is to factory reset it, which should just load the latest iOS I believe. What other options to reinstall are there?
My Air2 is quite stable currently. Haven't noticed much performance deterioration on iOS 11.3....
That was me, last month.

I am confident the fresh install will get me back to that happy place.
I haven’t tried Reason, though I’m intrigued by it (I probably have too many DAWs, and definitely shouldn’t spend any more money...or vice versa
)
VCV rack is in my future but I’m waiting for a more direct vst implementation.
The machine (Surface Pro 3) is stellar for music, have heard rumors that later SPs aren’t as ideal which seems odd. Bitwig has an amazing touch interface but I find I am trackpading and keyboarding happily as well (the trackers...Renoise and Aodix, and Fasttracker and ProTracker re-issues)
Thanks for this...had most stuff turned off...wasn't aware of the transparency option though
