AUM Buzz!!! help....

I have been using my Apps live in AUM for a while now - and all of a sudden I am getting the Audio cutting to a loud buzz in AUM that is only fixed by killing the App or going into settings on AU and clicking the audio button of high quality, or if what was high quality turning it off - effectively resetting the audio engine.

Does anybody know why this happens and how to fix it. It does no occur by maxing out anything, and nothing has changed in my set up.

  • What AU app are you talking about that you are changing the settings on?

  • Oops meant to be AUM - not AU

Um, OK, but you still haven't said what AU(s) you're having the problem with. Is it just one, all, a few? Given that you can go to the settings for high quality in the app, it sounds like you are talking about a particular app. Which one? How many instances? What else do you have running? No one can help if you don't provide more details than you have.

Also, if you haven't already tried it, the first thing to do is shut down all apps, then reboot your iPad and try again. It may be as simple as that.

  • @rhaley ... I've encountered a similar situation, with an IAA effect inserted, and discovered that the buzz is disappearing when switching over to that app, bringing it to the foreground.
That behavior seems to be an already described bug with IAA, although recently there have been occuring complete shutdowns on my device (air2 on iOS 11.3.1) after playing for a while, probably having to do with au memory/prioritizing stuff.

    Cheers & good luck (:

  • I’m using
    Ravenscroft AU
    Neo Soul AU
    LayR IAA
    Isymphony IAA

Which one is buzzing? Which one did you change the settings on? Have you tried rebooting the iPad?
We’re never going to get to an answer if you don’t answer the questions needed.

I don’t have any of those apps so I won’t be much help anyway, but I can say it’s mos likely going to be because of one of those apps, or just plain overload if your CPU. As LayR is the most recently updated, and only just now an AU, I would definitely suspect it first. If youve already tried rebooting, then I’d suggest trying LayR as IAA rather than AU to see if that changes anything.

I'm also guessing that maybe Ravenscroft is the app you changed the settings from high quality on. That would make sense to me as with all those AUs running, you're likely running out of memory when Ravenscroft is loading a shitload of samples. Again, changing to IAA rather than AU might be the answer if that's the case.

As I said in my original post - AUM audio engine is crashing, I also said its not overloaded, I also said that LayR is an IAA, not AU

You're right - misread your post about LayR. Sorry.

You said it's not overloaded, but you don't know that. There's more to overloading than just CPU %.

But, my point is, one of your AUs, or the combination of them is causing the problem. It may be AUM's "audio engine" (whatever the hell that is) is crashing, but it's one of the apps or the combination that's causing it.

Did you reboot the iPad?? Which app did you change the settings in that cleared it up??? [edit - nvm you clarified already]

Nevermind. I don't have the patience for this, and don't have any of the apps to do my own testing. Hopefully someone else in a better mood will help you out. :/

  • Ok. I take a guess. :#

3 of the apps you listed are heavy RAM users, as they are sample based. LayR is a known processor abuser, but may or may not be heavy on the RAM (I don’t know).

So my guess is you are having a possible RAM issue. The AU stuff has a RAM limit imposed by iOS, but not the IAA stuff. So I suggest trying the IAA apps as AU, and see if the RAM gets managed better, thus providing the needed buzzkill.

It’s just a suggestion. It is what I would try if I was having this issue. B)

  • Great, thanks for the suggestion, I’ll play around with the IAA V’s AU versions.

  • Unfortunately, I’m also experiencing this kind of buzzing... I’m using none of the apps above though.

    My hardware is:

    • iPad6 (running iOS 11.3.1)
    • ZoomU44
    • Apple USB3 Camera Connector
    • SoftStep1

    I’m generally using apps:

    • Audiobus3
    • LoopyHD
    • AUM
    • MidiFire
    • Audulus3
    • Samplebot
    • FluxFX

I included the following info in an email to Michael Tyson:
“I'm getting an app drop out exactly once per session, which usually translates into a loud "ZZZZZZ" sound (sounds like a sawtooth synth note) that is only stopped by reloading some app. I've tried tons of different variations of apps regarding this issue (without Audiobus, without AUM, without LoopyHD, swapping different FX apps, IAA versus AU plugs, etc), but it still always happens, though sometimes the sound just comes for a second and leaves... as if any dropped app has reconnected automatically and the problem resolves. And surprisingly to me, after this first outburst (whether I need to reload an app or it self-resolves), it doesn't happen again, unless I totally restart the audio system/session. I've also tried a different audio interface and it still happens, so that seems to rule out an audio interface issue.”

Regarding the issue, Michael let me know about an Apple bug that’s been around since iOS8: “(search ‘buzz’ at https://audiob.us/bugs)”

After reading about the bug, I am pretty convinced it’s the same thing, now resurfacing. If I mess with “Measurement Mode” type switches I can force the same buzz sound to happen.

I’m still testing... trying different settings on these apps, etc. If I find anything additional, I’ll post here.
