May 1st. The workers day! Do you get paid enough as a musician?

I’ve had a successful career as a musician and radio host, and want to share a few tips.

Don’t give away your work for free, remember to copyright your stuff somehow.
Don’t think your work is not worth something, think about all the hours you used to get this good.
Use your imagination when you want to sell your music, there are fusions if ways to do it.

Radio stations are always on the lookout for good contentum. That’s music beds we can use under talk, and in commercials.
Send soundbits to your local station, & make sure to make your price fair for both parties.

Hotels. Now, they have a lot of dough
About 10 years ago I had my own rockabilly band. The thing about hotels is that they have seasons. Summer & pre Christmas are the best. If you have a band, make a package for the buyer. Specify your musical style and price. Say 4 weekend in a row or something. I used to sell one hour of Elvis and two sets of rockabilly/Bluesrock.
Hotel managers like finished products, so they don’t have to plan the bit themselves. Fair price for both parties, is a winner.
And remember, hotels can pay in ways that doesn’t show in their budget. get a week in a Luxus Suite for your band and partners in a nearby town... this is a free service and doesn’t cost the manager much at all :)

Arenas. If you live near an arena, take a visit to the manager. I’ve done it many times :) we have the national arena for wrestling in my city, and that place is often an arena for international bands. I’ve got to play support for a number of top bands, just by talking to the manager.

I wish you all a happy 1st of may.
Workers unite!

Please play something of Billy Bragg today

Played his version of ‘Walk Away Renee’ with Johnny Marr, and the wonderful ‘Levi Stubbs Tears.’

As for Repulse the Monkey music, hey we sell a few albums and individual tracks. If we sold a load more, that would be great, of course.

But for a bunch of noise makers with no intention of ever playing live, making good stuff and gaining respect from peers and superiors is of greater value. :)

  • I am considering making money by playing the violin near outside diners. I cannot play the violin, but go-away-money spends like any money😈

Used to make a decent living years ago, playing in about ten different local bands at once and gigging most nights. Just small pubs and parties, but my ex was in the bands too so by the end of the week we'd have a healthy pile of cash in our pockets. I remember playing a festival once and found I was on stage six times in one day.

Unlike now - my hobby music just costs me money for kit, and the prog/space rock band I'm in have yet to gig due to constant faffing about 'refining' the setlist.

Did a little tour of France 20 odd years ago. During the day some of the band would busk outside the cafe's, and a couple from the hippy bus parked next to us on the beach (from Circus Archaos) would join in with a bit of performance art. We'd make more busking than the gigs we played in the evenings. Best bit was when a few of us were sitting on the beach, tuning up and changing strings ready for the next busking session, and people kept coming up to us and giving us money. 'But we're just tuning up...' we protested...quietly...

  • Note to self: brush up on performance art and mime

Ok. I will put on “A New England” per your request.

That’s done. Now I have to play the whole “Back to Basics” album. Freakin’ great stuff. It’s been a while...

The tour of France must have been fun :)
My hay day was in the pre aids era. I started playing guitar at 15 in 76. That year, 3 chords was all you needed to play God Save the Queen, and pretty soon my face was full of self made safety pins- piercings and butter in the hair.

Good to hear! Enough is always enough for any musician. Except Liberace.

One of my absolute favourite rock songs. Billy Bragg is a great fellow.
What about The Alarm. I used to play them and Billy interchangeably.

  • I’m still at the point of just getting free tickets to the festivals I perform at. Still got my 40hr a week day job, and hoping to shift the balance soon!

  • MayDay!!! Its a great day to make music!!!

At this point I'm getting paid as much as I'm willing to put in....
    And thats the secret...

After my daughter was born, things obviously changed. Playing in a band for money slowed down big time. Its no surprise this change led to DJ and OneManBand gigs/weddings, Ableton and iOS music. Being in a band was too much commitment sometimes and led to misunderstandings among players with or without kids. I found myself in front of a computer more and more.....
I'm happy this happened now. I became a better guitar player and singer...I learned Ableton Live, and a lot about iOS (thanks to this forum) and aquired more gear and knowledge. Now this is paying off. I'm doing all the "solo" stuff and playing in 2 bands and have all the gear and know-how to do it. I still have a DayJob at a print press and am still able to do what i love...and raise my daughter. The music is not just about the money...I'm having fun! Its all about how much you're willing to put into it....

MayDay!!! Its a great day to make music!!!

I think this is probably true of sex as well, apart from the money bit and the enjoyment also maybe. Not sure. That matter to one side, some fine posts here...

    Great post @Scottzilla82

Of course it’s about enjoyment, but the worlds greatest & most gifted composer died at 35... with great debts
It’s just that, what we make... if we want... it’s worth something for someone.

My greatest achievement was making a song on my Roland D20 after seeing a girl and falling in love.
I was in a relationship then  but that relationship went to hell and after a Nachspiel I managed to get this big catch back to my place. I mean, it was really a catch. A Korean beauty 10 years younger than me. I played her the song, we drank some more... shared a bed, we were shortly engaged and married to this day. 1992.

Music is definitely worth... at least something 😝

It was wonderful - the ten or so years I did gigging in local bands was probably the best time of my life. We did two French tours with one band, and they were crazy. At one gig at a celtic festival, we played for 8 hours. Various musicians from other bands would come and go on the stage, and at one point we had about six German accordianists complete with lederhosen joining us.

Looks like you had a bit of fun too!

These days I'd be happy selling the odd CD or track from my solo experiments, just to confirm I'm not wasting everyone's time - though I'd need to make them available for sale first. With the band, I'd be happy playing at festivals for rickets, but the way it's going I think I'm going to duck out of that one again. Difficult when you all get older, with comittments and stuff

  • I’ve had this conversation many times over because Oxford uk is notorious for not paying bands in the name of promotion, exposure etc. The other reason seems to be that most of students are skint etc,

On the global level I see no difference between being a musician and any other skilled profession. You need formation and then continuous professional development to maintain and improve your skills to do the job well. You need to invest in tools and prep for the task at hand.

Likely it is cultural and effort must be made to change it. Basically, if everyone started charging for their music all at the same time things would change. Of course that would mean that if the music is not acceptable by the audience, the audience would not pay for it. For more arty and harder to perceive ‘fancy’ genres there’s grants I suppose ;)

The idea that playing music is fun has nothing to do with it. In fact it is rather paradoxical that most of people view work as something that should not be fun. Madness!

    So true...

I get so much more enjoyment out of my iPad and Ableton explorations than I do playing in one of the bands I'm in. This band is strictly a cover band. Most of the songs I do not enjoy AT ALL!!! But guess what? We get paid very well... And like my 1st post said...its all about what your willing to put into it.

When my friend asked me to join this band with a huge list to learn full of the most cliche PopRock Radio songs you could imagine....a shuttered a bit and thought to myself "ahhh geeeze." But I put the time in to learn them, and now I have solid consistent gigs, and I'm actually starting to enjoy it more now. And my other band is working on original music, so I get a good balance.

But at the end of the day....there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting down in front of all my apps and losing myself in the fray...

  • @supadom are you saying that all jobs, from playing music to cleaning bathrooms, should be fun? Conversely, are you suggesting that playing music (or painting watercolors or playing golf) couldn't also be a hobby?

I'm only challenging the widespread idea that job is a drag and hobby is something that makes one flourish.

I've worked some 10 years aa a cleaner in the UK and can tell you that it did indeed make me happy. Its all in your head and the attitude with which you approach stuff in life can totally make a difference especially in a place like the UK with its shitty weather and insular attitudes.

  • I get paid exactly what I’m worth as a musician, any of you that have heard my music understand why I’m broke.

The argument that music should be fun and I don’t want to be paid... is ok, but that doesn’t exclude the argument that professional musicians should be paid fairly, from being just as valid.

I also have fun with apps and make shit just for myself. I mean, of course I do. It makes me happy, although not fat.
But if someone asks me to make a tape and offers me a bottle of wine, when I’ve used hours... that’s not fair.
Not fair to me, or any of y’all.

    Great piece @supadom

Nice pivot, but that’s not what he wants to say.... or is it 😝
