Back at the start of the 90s I had the Yamaha SY77. I didn’t realise at that time that the M1 wasn’t just a sample-playing box but actually was a very sophisticated actual synthesiser only lacking in a resonant filter (which I hardly ever use anyway). When I got the iM1 app a few years ago I was pheasantly surprised to see how much of an actual synthesiser it is, if you ignore all of the samples and sample-playing capability and just concentrate on the oscillators as digital wave generators.

    Here’s my WTFknobs on iM1:

Very informative video Ian, you have a great gift of knowledge. Very interesting history of the dwgs. Thanks for sharing!

I always learn something from Ian's video's.....have this on the Watch Later list for a time when i am in receptive mood :)

He’s bright and intellgent....I’ve seen some of his philosophical videos in the past and they are food for thought. I like that video he did with crowds walking down the stairs from street level to take the subway trains in reverse set to his music I believe

Yes this was an interesting video, goes into a lot of depth about the Poly 800 and how one synth serves as a model for the next. I hope to see more of these, particularly related to M1, and Wavestation, Monopoly, maybe even Odessey.

Is it good idea to have both an IOS and a computer copies or just the IOS? Do they sound the same?

They are the same. Of course it's a good idea to have both. You might even be able to exchange your presets between the two, not so sure.

Thanks. Well, here’s my Mono/Poly tour. I should do something on my ARP 2600 one day when I put the VCA in, and compare it with the Odyssey (which I don’t have, but have had a lot of experience with in the 80s and have familiarity with the circuit diagram and the differences between it and the ARP 2600 (which are mostly in the VCA as it happens – the 2600 VCA is very sophisticated, but by the time the Odyssey came along, the first of the OTAs were available so they used that instead)).

  • I lent my poly-800 to someone 20yrs ago but didnt get it back because I was too depressed at the time (likely caused by raving too much oh the irony)...I recall it was annoyingly weak no matter what you did with it anyways.
