AUM Cracklefest
When attempting to use AUM in my iPad I am being plagued by loud crackling when navigating within it to different apps. I don’t just mean a little- it continues after making these sounds even after making changes.

....sigh...
Just how do people think anyone can help if you don't provide any details? You could be running an iPad 2 for all we know.
Sorry if I sound snarky, but this happens over and over again. People can probably help, but I for one am a lot less motivated if I have to waste a bunch of time pulling the info out of people one morsel at a time.
This was brought up before. It’s possible iOS 11 screwed up the priorities between audio and graphics was something mentioned a lot.
Yeah I’m definitely having this issue myself (Air2), however in ‘performance mode’ with Samplr running in the foreground and everything else controlled via MIDI, the problem is less. Inside AUM there’s sadly a ‘slide to crackle’ feature right now, but alas.. we endure.
It's not snarky, I tend to ignore replies to threads with insufficient information in order to be able to assist.
Bare minimums should be, iOS device, iOS Version, any additional hardware and list affected apps.
In some cases cpu-usage & buffer-size could also lead to vital parts of the solution...
I am running an iPad Air 2.
OS 11.1.2 40 GB still available
I am using only two channels. One has Groovebox going into Kosmonaut as an AUE. The other has iELECTRIBE going into Turnado- synced with Ableton Link. The crackling happens with other apps too- iKaossilator as an example.
When I go from one app to another it’s a guaranteed crackle- which seems to linger intermittently for a short while before all but disappearing- until I open another app.
I have just tested it again with four different apps. Figure into DFX and Gadget into EFX with Link -and it happens all over again.
I have tried deleting AUM and reinstalling it
I have this on Air 1 11.3 with about 4 channels of @brambos apps running in AUM. It happens in FLSM but is not a problem in BM3 for some reason. I still think it’s an iOS issue and not hardware or apps other than apps that use a lot of CPU but that’s to be expected.
I had kind of assumed that everyone was having this kind of problem- to some extent at least- on mine it’s absolutely horrendous- and renders the app unuseable. Are there some people out there with an Air2 with no crackling going on at all?
I’ve always had crackling when switching between Xequence and any other app, any iOS version, any device. The OS probably just gives a very high priority to the animations so they’re smooth... I don’t think app developers can do anything about it. (the problem does not occur when locking the device, so it’s not related to the transition to the background).
Increasing buffer size should alleviate the problem though.
OK sorry- forget all that. I have just tried the very same set ups on another iPad Air2 and it is working pretty much perfectly. It just seems to be this particular iPad- so it is not AUM.
I think I’ll try a soft reset and update the OS to see if that helps.
Thanks
Thanks for the added info. That helps a lot.
I have an Air 2 and rarely have crackling problems unless I load up a a bunch of heavy stuff like multiple instances of Model D. I will try to do a test with the apps you mentioned later today and report back.
Definitely check your buffer settings in AUM if you haven't already. Raising the buffer settings is the single biggest thing you can do to reduce crackles. I generally run at 256, but take it higher if I start to have problems. Also, check the sample rate. I keep mine at 44100Hz. I found out that plugging my lightning earbuds from my iPhone into the iPad hijacked the data rate to 48000Hz, and did tend to increase crackles, I switched back to regular earbuds and the problem improved.
I also highly recommend upgrading to iOS 11.3. I've read that some issues with AUv3 support were improved but can only be taken advantage of on 11.3. I've not had any adverse effects from the update.
Finally, the golden rule. Always, always clear background apps after every music making session. After you shut down AUM, kill all running apps. Hold down the power button until the power-off slider appears, but don't slide it. Now hold down the home button until you get back to the home screen. I do this as a matter of routine, and I believe more than anything this explains the reasons I have so many fewer problems than other people. So many ghost processes keep hanging around even after a clean shutdown of all apps. This clears them - though in a few cases even this didn't and I had to do a full reboot.
Oh - and try going to airplane mode during the session to see if this has any effect. It has never for me, but others have consistently advised it.
Thank you very much for taking the time and for all the other replies- I shall implement the changes very soon. I have returned with good news however- the soft reset worked a treat! - Without the update (which like I say I am about to perform).
That was crazy for a while- total crackles- like a badly connected wire to a speaker with someone waggling it about to annoy you.
Cheers
Good to hear it got solved! Indeed, avoiding having ghost processes hanging around is extremely important.
Going to be the contrary voice here and mention that the issue as described above is present on my device (fresh OS reboot, with optimisation & maintenance procedures upheld on a religious level).
The device will run smoothly, but even something like moving a fader will result in a ‘focussed’ crackle occurring.
It’s managable because AUM isn’t a foreground process on that device and otherwise it runs ok, but I thought I’d mention it.
It feels like an OS bug to me (also happening on app switching), so I’ve just been waiting it out.
Does it happen regardless of which apps you have hosted in AUM, or mostly with specific apps?
Yeah, unfortunately I think also it's an iOS bug, regarding thread priority, which seems to happen more (or only) on some devices/models and not on others.
I have checked with my contact at the Apple audio team, and they say somebody is actively looking at it but that they don't have any useable information to share yet.
