What the new iPad 2018 128Gb Like for the music stuff.

Or just what is the best iPad for music apps now, I'm still using my old Air 2 so eventually I'm going to have to upgrade.

Comments

  • Personally I'll wait until after the WWDC'18 and see where iOS is heading before I decide.
The battery on my Air 2 is starting to loose it's juice but it's hooked to wall power most of the time anyway.

I will be installing iOS12(non beta) on it when it becomes available and see how it rolls.
If it becomes a PITA I'll get a 3rd Gen iPad Pro once released...

Performance of the 2018 iPad should be quite a boost compared to the Air 2 even though Ram is still 2GB.

10.5 or 12.9? I often wonder about that when people only write ‘Pro’ :)

Most likely the big one due to my degrading eyes...
Hopefully Cubasis will be optimised for bigger screens by then :)

  • Optimized for bigger screens is seldom optimized for degrading eyes in my experience.

Is there anything you want testing in particular Doug?

I bought the 32G because I don't store huge amounts of samples or video and can transfer large files to the mac. £319, absolute bargain.

One thing I do that helps the eyes age a little more softly is during the day I keep the night time warm filter on so my screen isn’t emitting so much damaging blue light

  • @Jocphone yes, that would be great, will it run three Model Ds or three LayR AUv3s that kind of thing, it has be better than the Air2 right?, I would need to get 128Gb version, I think the Pros are just too expensive for me anyway, it would like forever to save up, but if the performance is considerably better with the iPad 2018 then the price is very appealing and it has be good for another fair updates, cheers

  • @thesoundtestroom I bought a 2017 iPad with 128Gb new last year as I didn’t want to be running out of space. I have heaps of music apps installed and it has happily run everything. I still have 74Gb free storage. I would say the extra cost over the 32Gb is worth it if you have a lot of apps installed (which you seem to!).

There is not much difference between the 2017 and 2018 iPad models other than a faster processor and Apple Pen support in the latter. Both have the same amount of RAM (2Gb) which could be an issue if you want to run multiple apps at the same time although I haven’t had that problem. If you think more RAM would be useful then you will be looking at an iPad Pro for a lot more money!

  • You got me wondering about this and I found a video -

I think for the CPU bump alone it's worth the little bit of extra money. I went for a refurb 2017 iPad myself and I haven't run into any issues yet.

  • If price is no option, go by size. If size dont matter it sounds like the big boy is king now with all the quirks ironed out. (Or not?). For me it depends on the price and not feeling ripped off by a truly shitty file system. But I digest. Last year in Canada the regular ipad with 128 gigs was less than half the price of the 128gig 10.5 “Pro” but this year the regular ipad is now more than half the price of the 10.5 making that juicy 4gigs of ram attractive... but still too expensive for me. But eh, the iPad is great. I need to work on me now. Oh, the Pro screen? So overhyped it hurts my head and makes me dread the future of humanity.

Well, a 12'' screen is sure helpfull when you work with custom user interfaces (Lemur, Midi Designer, etc...)

Don’t have Layr but did a very quick test and four Model D tracks in Cubasis. Some distortion but that may have been the speakers. Will try a more thorough test later if I get time.

Yah I did say if the size matters then go for it. I was referring to the laminated pro display on both sizes (and the old air2) that some people seem to not be able to not live without that I can barely notice.

  • @Jocphone thanks man, all this is very useful.

All the feedback here has being great, l,ease keep it coming as much as possible

No worries. Had another little test and added a busier track. Seems to vary quite a lot. Sometimes it breaks up on 3, other times you can nearly get 5 instances of Model D playing. Not sure why exactly but those seem to be the conditions mine work under.

  • @Jocphone Thanks again, I think for me this is probably the best option then since I basically use the iPad for reviews most of the time, I think the Model D thing is probably down to patches used, some with more effects, polyphony etc

  • I choked a bit on the price of the 2017 12.9 Pro here in Canada, but the larger size has made my gigging life much easier, as I don't have to squint so much whilst making music on the fly.

And to think my live set-up once involved two iPod Touches! (Though that stopped being fun rather quickly.)

I could have swore that I paid a hundred bucks less for my iPad last year.
