AUM Buzz

Has anyone else had a problem with AUM audio engine going into a loud Buzz - only fixed by closing the app?

I have been using for a good year week after week with little problems, but last week this has started to happen - even if I create a new AUM file with just one app (LayR). As I play live this is a killer scenario that cannot happen.

I am using a 2017 iPad Pro 512Gb, latest iOS, and in the simplest scenario I get the problem with AUM and LayR.
I have done hard resets, and nothing else is running.

Anyone else had this and resolved it?

I have been in touch with AUM but heard nothing back yet

Comments

  • LayR got updated last week.

If this is the only thing that's changed I'd test out with a few different apps.

  • Are you running Loopy at all?

Are you using AB2 or AB3 as well and Loopy at all?

  • I also have gotten the buzz using LayR and AUM. Same as described above.

Only apps open 1 instance of LayR IAA recording on one channel in AUM.
High quality mode on in AUM... No effects slots in use.

    I’m on a 2017 iPad.

I just wanted to confirm the bug.

iv’e had this happen on several apps. Mostly i get it when using beathawk. if i’m using au beathawk and tap the play transport control within beathawk, it freaks out and makes that buzzing sound. I’ve found no solution yet.

    Nope -

Nope, just AUM and LayR in this instance (although my normal set up is LayR, Ravenscroft, iSymphonic, Neo Soul, and Heavy Brass - which also went into the Buzz)

Maybe the new update of LayR is the cause as I also use the IAA version, I'll test an AU version

    Thanks for the input everyone.

You could post a link to your AUM file used to play the setup in AUM with LayR that is causing you problems so that others could try to replicate what you’ve been experiencing.

  • Hi rhalay, I’m also having an unacceptable buzz deal happening, but with other apps.

One surprising thing I’ve found, is that it only happens once per audio session. Can you confirm this, or alternatively, if you kill the buzz once, does it come back multiple times?

I have killed it multiple times unfortunately

  • What happens if you turn On/Off the High Quality / Measurement Mode setting in AUM while the session is running? Anything?
Also what sample rate and buffer setting sizes are you running at?

  • You’ve found a way to create the buzz with just 2 apps, so that’s actually good for testing, at least. It would be helpful if someone had the exact same setup as you to try and replicate the buzz on their machine. If it doesn’t happen for them, you could go through settings to find the differences.

When I turn on/off the HQ mode it kills the buzz - I assume re-setting the audio engine
    256Mb frames, 44100 sample rate

only got Layr the other day, but can confirm I do get the app buzz too in AUM with IAA ports. The Layr ports keep crashing for me, such that I think I can only use Layr as an AUv3 at the moment...

  • edited May 2018

My buffer is at 256 and my sample rate is at 44100.
No AUM file created as I just loaded up LayR IAA, switched to LayR and hit record.

I have not repeatedly tested as I was recording. I just used a different recording method.

  • I‘ve had similar things happen from time to time, used to be Turnado often, but always went away after shutdown of all programs and restart of iPad. Hasn‘t happened to me anymore for at least the last 6 months, though...

  • Do you guys think in 20-30 years we will be buying plugins to emulate that “classic iOS crackle and AUM buzz”?
    :D

I have just found the cause of this issue This was quite difficult to track down as it happens only after several minutes of running in AUM ( and why only AUM I don't know either ). Basically LayR is recieving an audio session interruption notification from the system. I've never actually seen this notification happen before, since LayR was developed, and it's possible it's a new "thing" with iOS 11.

... looking for a fix, will release an update as soon as I've got something ...

FYI: LayR is not crashing when this happens, what is happening is that AUM is no long calling LayR's render loop after this notification is issued. Disconnecting and reconnecting LayR, or doing some other action to reset the connection seems to cure the issue.

wow ok this is potentially really good info. So I’m not using LayR, (I’m using looping and fx for live guitar) but would this “interruption notification” apply to all other apps as well? (and both IAA and AU?)

  • I get this using SeekBeats every time.

So we have a LayR fix for this issue now, and it's in test. I just want to say this isn't an AUM bug. It's looking like it is probably a bug in iOS. Basically, for reasons unknown the system is periodically interrupting/stopping the app's rendering loop. The system never notifies the host that the hosted app has been stopped and so the host keeps on playing the same buffer over and over and hence the buzz. The answer is for the hosted app to restart it's rendering after receiving the interruption.

... but only if it's currently being hosted (IAA is connected), otherwise it will produce a ghost-process or drain battery in the background after a real interruption (such as a phone call or alarm).
