OT - Holy f#%!<*#?%*!?^*%#!!!!!!!!!! (Snarky Puppy and Corey Henry)

I love this band. Lingus is the tune that first got me. The performance from the live CD/DVD release We Like It Here is beyond brilliant. The tunes presses buttons in me I didn't know I had. The composition of it - from the slow and steady beginning, to the implied double-time break, to the wonderfully lyrical guitar line... It sets up themes and builds on them not only melodically but dynamically. They whip it into a good froth with some excellent horns trading solos and suddenly WHAM! They drop into almost nothing, with only a heartbeat from the bass and drums.

Introducing Corey Henry. His solo builds from a murmur to the most amazing flurry of rehamonization you've ever heard. They blast through an explosion of a finale and it's all said and done. That's without me using 5 billion more words to tell you stupidly excellent it is:

I've watched this video easily 50 times and I get shivers every time. EVERY. TIME.

Ok, fine - The band is brilliant. The composition is beautifully constructed, the players are A list and in top form... Clearly I've got a handle on what they do.

WRONG.

I saw this performance of the same song earlier this evening and it brought me to my knees:

I was very literally in tears. Corey Henry is a f---ing genius. My ears could hear the beauty of the harmony and reharmony and REHARMONY but I couldn't begin to verbalize what he was doing. It was magic. It reminded me of what a gift it is that we can all share a common language yet wield it I'm such wild and disparate ways. How we're all complimentary yet individual....

So yeah - mind blown twice over.

Pardon the tangent, but tonight I had a MOMENT and needed an outlet, I appreciate you all humoring me. Hope the videos help offset the waxing poetic....

  • Have to agree. I have a saved list of various musicians/performances on YouTube - this is in there. The guy is a genius. One of the other players that bring a tear to the eye is Hiromi - maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but she is astounding;

  • Corey Henry and Jacob Collier are amazing.

Then they meet Marco Parisi and blows your mind

I could link videos forever and don’t repeat one...

  • I’m going to see him live at Montreux Jazz festival. Big fan of Snarky Puppy here and Cory is mind-blowing...

  • They're my current fav players too.
Add Thiago Pinheiro for a nice virtuous, rhythmic and melodic brazilian touch.

I've watched this one many times as well. Not only is Hiromi flat out ridiculous, but of course Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips are no slouch especially either.

@Dubbylabby let me give those a gander. I'll check back in once I've picked my mind up off the floor...

  • @Davepoo those and Jojo Mayer is all you need to get nuts forever...
