Moog Model 15 Price Drop
AppShopper advised me that it’s down to 14.99, from 29.99.

I’m undecided whether I’ll get it - I already have too many synths that I’ve not really sat down and properly played with. This one seems like it has a steep learning curve before you can start making great sounds. Is that a fair assessment?

Out of all my many dozens of iOS synths, Model 15 is easily in the top 5 ...In fact, Probably #1 or 2 out of over 100.. To me it's one of my 10 'must have' synths , along with Zeeon, Animoog, Thor, Nave, model D, Korg iMono/Poly/iPolysix, Wavestation. It fits so well in the mix and is one of several iOS synths that I regularly use in my desktop DAW productions.
Learning curve is steeper than most subtractive synths on iPad, but much easier than desktop modular synths (VCV Rack/Reaktor Blocks/Bazille/Ace) ... It's actually quite easy to tweak pre-built patches (of which there are many) to tailor fit the sound to your preference, and there are many great tutorials if/when you're ready to take the next step into building your own. Ask.video actually has a full model 15 tutorial video series that I used myself to get up to speed, and there's also plenty of free youtube content.
I actually think the opposite, it's pretty easy to make sounds with it and because of its modular nature it forces you to understand synthesis as you patch it up rather than just blind knob twiddling. I used it as my first step into patch design a couple of years ago and it was a great experience for me. Also it just sounds lovely, one of the top 5 sounding synths on iOS IMO, really warm and juicy.
When I was first learning it I started a thread of tips and tricks, you might find it useful:

Model 15 is a great synth no doubt. Not sure the sliding interface works that well on the 9.7 iPads
It's a brilliant sounding synth that I bought and have never used. I much prefer the modular environments where you pick and choose your components. Much less visual noise. Saying that I will probably have a better play with it one day when I have a need because it does sound great.
I have no idea what to do with the modular part of the synth. But the factory sounds are amazing and can be tweaked with the obvious knob controls enough for my needs.
For me it is totally worth it for just that, even if i never use it’s full potential
For me, remembering where the modules are laid out helped a bunch. I also use the scroll widget on the right edge instead of two-finger scroll. But yes, it does seem like it is a little too big and doesn’t quite fit the screen.
IMHO A much better solution would be to skip the 'rack emulation' and do an UI similar to Model D with a separate matrix patch bay for patching. I love the sounds of Model 15 but the Metal UI heats up my Air 2's GPU to an uncomfortably hot level after 15-20 minutes of use
I suspect the Metal UI since the Air 2 doesn't get hot when I use the Model 15 AUv3 with it's UI hidden.
Also I'm not a huge fan of having to pan around the screen.
I may have to try and source a 'lap top cooler' I can rest my Air 2 on to keep it 'cool'...
Model 15 is one of those apps I’d gladly buy again and again.
Funnily enough I get better results on an iphone6+ (might be just me!) - but did buy a 12" pro to get as much on screen as possible - and the M15 controller parts (which are still in their box waiting to be assembled) should improve this.
^ this
I have to use a pot holder on one hand.
Cool, thanks for the advice folks! The general level of enthusiasm spoke volumes to me, so I've decided to buy it
It is a great app, synth, and company. I really like all of their apps.
Worth noting that turning off the fancy graphics should help the CPU issues. The patch cables by default move and shift perspective as you scroll and even as you tilt the iPad. Not an issue on my 12.9 iPad, but I’m curious if it would make a bigger difference for those on Air 2
@Topicstarter Thanks for this tip! Zmors is interesting but this one for sure also. Thanks again!
I open up my freezer and play Model D there
It's one of the best-sounding synths on ios, in my personal top three. The presets are good, and it's easy enough to tweak them. Building from scratch is harder than say Zeeon, but do you really need to build from scratch?
It's interesting that so many people comment on how hot their IPad gets when running the Model 15 app.
I did a ton of preset development on my first gen IPad Air, (IOS 10) and never once had a problem with it getting hot. It gets somewhat warmer during a long session, but I still use it just about every day and have never experienced it getting anywhere near "uncomfortably hot", not with any application.
I wonder what's going on here?
Oh, and to the OP...
Buy it while it's on sale. It's one of the best synths on IOS.
You won't regret it.
My ipad never gets hot either. Huh.
And did i see that Model D is also on sale? And Animoog and Filtaron?! (Filtatron is worth it?)
Was only kidding off course
Mine runs super efficient and smooth so everything is fine here.
My pot holder is covered in sequins so I can pretend I’m MJ.
I’ve been keeping my eye on this app
Only became an issue for me after updating to 11. Could be coincidence, combined with the age of my iPad, but makes me very nervous about running it.
It doesn’t run as hot as Gadget lol
