While I think Patterning is no doubt one of the best stand alone drum apps, I no longer want to work that way.

For myself, I would love to see a Patterning AU Midi and separate sound AU. Splitting the midi from the sound side makes more sense to me. Eventually someone will get this (beyond Bram Bos).

Personally I'd prefer the full patterning all in one AU UI. Sound and midi. Splitting stuff up takes me back toward IAA land... But with midi AU built in to it too so the option is there to just use it with empty tracks to sequence other AU, or combination of both. And all From one UI hosted in a daw.

Even rozeta I find clunky in many cases because they're all separate/specialised. Lots of jumping around still if I want to chain them etc. Something like a full screen modular rozeta with all the different rozetta params crammed inside it would be the ideal end game for me in terms of that kind of plugin..

Drambo seems to nail both sound + sequencing in AU but AFAIK isn't a midi AU for use with other AU? < That would take it over the top...

I find I get on well with what ever Rozeta front end I choose and then using a sound set. The sound set is basically just set and go, while I then use the Rozeta section to create. Thing is with this approach, we could have lots of different designs for controls being made that could then use any sampled sound sets or drum synths. Mix and match for me any day.

Yup I'm totally down for mix and match :) Just saying it would be cool to be able to do that more often from inside one AU. Have mix and match options in the same view/instance. And then still have all the other external mix and match options besides ;)

Would need Apple to alter the AU specs then to achieve separate AUs within one AU window. Once the AU windows become much more controllable, I’m sure the bigger iPads with a suitable DAW will host multiple AUs well enough.

I’m sitting this one out. I don’t need the new features. Patterning 1is fabulous and is good enough for me as-is. I absolutely would drop for the pre sale even without the discount, and probably even before reading the rest of the app description if I saw AUv3 capability, even more so with AUv3 midi-out.

    I find myself in agreement.

Patterning is probably my favourite drum app, rivalled only by DrumJam, and the two are not really competing. Design brilliance, in both cases. That said, I think it perfectly fair that customers are able and willing to say what new features they would value. Any developer must assess whether enough customers also want those features. So, I’m going to wait and see what happens here.

    My mindset too.

Love Patterning, probably my favourite drum app, and if I didn’t have v1 I’d buy this in a heartbeat, but the new features aren’t tempting me to buy it all over again.

These days all my rhythmic stuff is done in AUM, with mostly AU’s (Rozeta, Ruismakers, ReSlice), and so old favourites such as Patterning, Egoist, Elasticdrums etc. aren’t getting much use.

Don’t begrudge the dev releasing a new version one bit, and if I was flush I’d buy it just to support him.

Never say never though, and a vid might tempt me in the future, but AU support would be the upgrade that’d make it a useful proposition for me, as that’s the way I work now.

  • Can you sequence external hardware with AU midi? If not I think standalone is still very relevant

@fattigman In AUM you just route the AU midi to the external device using the midi route matrix - driving external synth/drums with midi does not require a standalone app.

Sure, why not? It's just MIDI. Send it wherever you like, internally or externally.

On P2: I actually always thought of Patterning as a great 'real' instrument. Hook it up to Link, get together with a few friends and jam away. It looks like P2 continues this tradition with a lot of very useful features.

I mean more fully featured, fullscreen AUs. Not multiple AU simultaneously ;) Like the whole rozeta suite could be in one AU...either modular or multipage. Would be way quicker for random experiments etc. Like for example look at syntronik AU.. Multipage and can tweak synth param, tweak arps, tweak fx chains etc. All in one AU.

I think we are looking at totally different scenarios really. Like most things, the ideal is often personal and hoped for in the future :)

  • Any Video teaser?

  • I can't wait for this to drop
This is my go to drum machine, and using it to drive other apps is great
    New features sound great
I agree with most about Audio units, but am happy if it drops as is, perhaps it will get AU in an update a few months later
Keep up the good work Dev
    My money is yours

  • Among the sea of wishes and hopes, I have to add one that I haven’t seen mentioned yet...color palettes. The original was great because it was bright and popped off the screen, which made it even more fun to use.

The early screenshots of 2 suggest a ‘gritty remake’ of the original. And since we all know that Batman ‘89 is more fun (not to mention better) than the Christopher Nolan Batmans, here’s hoping for a livelier option (or two) for the release.

Cool yea, I hear you all about AUs. Noted.

Now let's talk about how cool these new features are

Hell yeah to the randomisation options. Is timing randomised at all for humanisation ?

Keeping them separate means you can easily swap the whole soundset without needing to perform exports/imports, or move the sequencing to somewhere else....e.g using AUM as host for live, and then Cubasis for production.

    Not sure I understand?

Also, you could still use multiple instances of a combined Rozeta suite AU if neccessary for a particular config...

Either way, I'm not knocking Rozeta or Patterning. Both were landmarks and are solid, useful creative apps. Just feel like the next step is beckoning now - fullscreen, multipage audio+midi AUs, where there's massive reduction in situations where you feel like 'Mmm, this workflow/option is clunky in comparison to equivalent on desktop'.

FWIW I'll still probably grab patterning at some point but only for the usage mentioned by some others in this thread, turning my iPad in to a killer drum machine for use with other hardware. I wouldn't use it for ios IAA daw stuff.

I think what Andy is saying, is that we end up with lots of different apps. Having many apps with differing interfaces is fine, but the time taken to use certain sounds with certain apps, slows down the process. Keeping interfaces and sounds separate, means that you can use whatever you want without time consuming export / import procedures.

Having multiple AU windows works really well in many instances and does not stop (nearly) full screen AU use. Switching controller surfaces between AUs can be pretty simple (as simple as switching between pages in an AU), if the host app is designed well. This way, product from multiple devs can be used with whatever controllers you want to use, which is not possible within a single AU.

Having multiple AU controllers within one AU is also possible and would be quite useful, so I can see a multiple use Rozeta type controller app is a good idea.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking Patterning. I’m just trying to convey my opinion to devs that make these IAA drum machines, that there is another market that is not oversaturated and needs new apps.

I have Patterning and about 20 IAA drum apps. I have not used any of them since AU Midi changed my way of using drum sounds.

Maybe the dev of Patterning may be able to use some of the code and make split AU versions too?

Same here. I love Patterning, but I stopped use it because don't fit in my "jam workflow".

I was expecting about AUv3 update Patterning.

Seems pretty clear, AU3 would sell a lot more P2’s around these parts.

  • I was hoping for 3 things from a patterning update:

    1. Built in micro synth
    2. Real time timestretch for synced wav loops
    3. Better & built in FX
  • I'm in the same boat in that Patterning has always been a favourite but I've been neglecting it since AUv3 has matured. I’m usually trying to avoid IAA apps now as they are often the weak link in the chain, productivity wise. I don’t enjoy stopping a session with IAA apps and having to save a separate project file etc.

However the new Audiobus 3 is helping since it's new features are bringing these apps back into my workflow again. it would be better for P2 to be as AB3 friendly as possible (AB3 midi) to tempt me since I may be on the fence and I may wait for the AU version.

Not that AU means not having a standalone version too. We'll always need that option, especially when you are using it with a desktop DAW etc :)

  • @_ki @brambos thanks for clarifying how midi works

  • Really surprised that there is such a downer on Patterning 2 here. Not quite sure what people expect for £14.99 these days! ;)

  • @Iso I think people expect AUv3 to be supported. And for good reason, seeing this is the system that has been developed by Apple as the standard plugin protocol for audio plugins within iOS. I too won't be upgrading until there is confirmation that AUv3 is fully supported.

  • @Iso said:

It’s not about being negative or having a ‘downer’ on the app. Simply letting developers know that since AU, many people have changed the way they work with drum app just as much as they have with synth apps.

At one time, we would all have rushed out and bought this in a second - many still will! For many of us however, IAA only apps no longer work for us - the price is irrelevant in this case.

  • Just going to put my vote in the “probably not worth the upgrade (great though it looks and much as I love v1) without AUv3 support” box for the workflow reasons already cited by others.

I still use Patterning because it’s so bloody clever (like I still use Figure despite still no frigging landscape support) but non-AUs are becoming the exception.

  • @Iso said:

I don't think there's a downer, and it's nothing to do with the price - it's just a lot of us are now doing rhythmic stuff via AU's. I do it that way as they're generally lighter on CPU, and I can sync a whole bunch of stuff from AUM without having to open standalone's.

I'm still a big fan of the standalone app, but I think that format is more appropriate for complex synths and grooveboxes. For me FX, lightweight synths and drum apps work best as AU's. And if an app supports both - even better.

Patterning v1 still does the job for me if I want a bit more variety for my drums though, so I'll still use it. The kits are great.

I guess we'll have to see how many fence-sitters have their heads turned when the videos turn up. Doug's vids tend to knock me off the fence when I'm cogitating. An AU update would have given me a bigger shove mind.

From what I've gleaned from the various Devs who post here, it seems AU is a PITA to implement, vast amounts of work & hugely complicated. I understand the whole AU " workflow" thing that people have become so invested in recently, and that's great for insert FX & synths, but i would argue that a Drum Machine (just keeping it simple! ) is a slightly different beast. Just my 2cents worth........don't wanna start a war over it or anything........ ;) :)

  • I would have loved to see audio slicing as a part of Patterning 2.

From what I’ve seen it’s harder to make an AU when an app wasn’t designed that way from the start. This is the root of my disappointment because the drum has been beating for AU for quite some time now (heh killer pun). The fact that it wasn’t implemented means it will probably never be.

But a circle in a full screen AUv3 is the promised land. I wonder who shall take us there? Audio Damage?
