Praise for Luis Martinez: Soft Drummer

After a recommendation from a forum member I checked out Luis Martinez' drum apps. And I am not sorry I did!

Recently I bought a hardware workstation (BI... Before IOS landed on me) after a lot of research I realized no WKS would have all of what I was looking for:
1. great onboard patches with deep tweak-ability, good piano, decent strings
2. elegant and easy UI,
3. good feeling keybed,
4. Jazz, Latin and world rhythms onboard
5. Mid range price point.

To my dismay no WKS had all these qualities (nor should they!) in my price range. I decided on a Roland FA-07 for reasons 1,2,3 and 5. The onboard rhythms were sorely lacking, though the drum sounds in themselves are great.
(Yes a Kronos 2 would have had everything I was looking for and more, but frankly I didn't like either the weighted keybd or synth action on the new LE, steep learning curve and, of course, twice the price!... In addition, with my new understanding, thanks to this forum if I can't make music that suits me on iOS then there's desktop... I guess you could say I experienced a paradigm shift. So no Kronos for me... Kontakt maybe!

Until I got to the audiob.us forum I could find no info on drum machines with patterns of jazz, Latin and world beats. Even the Roland forum, though they complained bitterly about the paucity of rhythm patterns and user slots on the FAs had no answer for me. Not iOS heads, I guess. But here, at the very center of the universe, a forum member told me about Luis Martinez, and all my dreams were realized.

As a jazz player I have started with Soft Drummer and this is what I have found:

  1. Great instrument quality (and many!)
  2. Ease of use and understanding without a manual
  3. Incredible swing and intensity parameters! (I found myself playing less and listening more!)
  4. A totally simple edit function. The kind of thing that I would ordinarily avoid.
I actually saved a modified 7/8 pattern within twenty minutes!
  5. Great patterns in 5 and 7 times.
6.Even though there is a focus on brushes, there's plenty of bang to be found.
  6. And finally, it inspired me to play better ( no mean feat!).

And if this weren't enough he has applied the same template to Mid East Drummer, Afro Drummer and Brazil Drummer and many others. And if Doug at the STR and my own experience count for anything the above should be stunners as well. Naturally there is a great Rock Drummer as well. My only regret is that he doesn't bundle 4 apps for the price of 3, but, frankly, they are so great I can't begrudge him the modest $17.99 he asks ( what % does Apple take, anyway?)

DrumJam was also recommended to me, but just in instrument quality alone, Lumbeat's are way better. If you don't know about these, please check them out! Luis is a master in my book!
