  • I hope he sells a lot, but this one I will pass on. Writing and playing my own bass lines is too much fun to farm out to a machine.

  • @LuisMartinez this is going to be a huge hit for non bass players and even bass players wanting to get a song going fast. That’s the biggest selling point for me for all of Lumbeats apps, they get me going on song creation in minutes and sometimes really that’s all we have in a day.

I am really waiting anxiously for this one since like 5 years ago!

  • I can’t play the bass so this app is very welcome.

  • @LuisMartinez let me know if you’re still in need of beta testers. Don’t have Facebook so if you need any, I sent you PM.

    Thanks!

Well much as I really like his other apps, the example in that FB video was not compelling to me. It's OK though, I really like writing bass lines so happy to do it the old-fashioned way.

  • Yeah, that video demo was almost cringe-worthy. It’s not the dev’s fault, he’s making a tool that plenty of people will find a use for, but man. Some things you can’t replicate.

  • Have to agree with @MusicMan4Christ this looks excellent for throwing ideas into a tune.
I actually thought the video mildly intriguing as the variations were played through.

  • We want an app like this that does guitar..

[deleted negative comment - good luck to the developer!]

  • I bet someone is already writing that code as you read my response :D

But you’ll get the credit for asking for it first here :o <3 o:)

  • Well... looks like it's got a little Catanya, Nora (phase arps) going on there.
    Hope it has MIDI out..

    I'm ready..

We tend to use high quality samples, played by talented folks like you, edited by us. :) Or roll our own, via iFretless, Groovebox or whatever app sounds good at the time. That said, a bass generation app has its appeal.

However, the Facetube demo was not convincing. It sounded devoid of expression. Will the finished app improve upon this, or will it always sound robotic?

Jeepers, tough crowd. I am a purist when it comes to bass (it was my first instrument) and I greatly enjoy composing my own basslines because I think it's an under appreciated art form. That said, I'd never expect an app to replicate a human playing bass--at least not with today's technology. I don't think the video sounded bad at all considering the current limits of technology--put that in a mix with drums and other instruments? Probably be passable to most untrained ears.

Yes, and I assume that the short clip was just a small part of what this can do. It also looks like it has a programmable sequencer. Sure, I usually program bass from a sequencer anyway, but having it in the app itself, while tweaking the sound seems useful. I'm interested to see how well it connects up with everything (midi in and out, etc.). Might be cool to run it and iFretless at the same time.

  • The secret sauce would be if the user could sync the fills and accents from from Lumbeat drum apps with this new bass app. Would be cool if the bass accents and runs would mesh with the drum variations as a good live rhythm section would.

I've been holding off on chiming in here because I have strong feelings about this app.

Did it sound like a bass player in the demo: NO.

Do I care? NOT SO MUCH.

Here's why - this app isn't for me. I love the Lumbeat apps, and I own Funk Drummer and Soft Drummer. While I am physically capable of playing the drums, I don't have a drum kit or the dexterity to do anything with any flavour. I love these apps for their ability to jam and trick the listener's ear.

Will the Lumbeat apps currently available feel like a real drummer to a real drummer? PROBABLY NOT. But that doesn't make these apps useless.

Taking that same line of thought here - this is a fantastic application of Luis' algorithms, and let's be honest here: He was giving the community a taste test to get us psyched, not to show us a fully baked and realized app. Is he trying to appeal to the guy who's been a studio guy toured as a bass player for 30 years? PROBABLY NOT. But that's not what this is for.

Just trying to provide a bit of perspective here. Let's hold off with the pitchforks and torches at least until release day and we really get to see what's what at least.

Everyone here wants this app to be great, and useful, so it is surely good to express any doubts now. That way, they can hopefully be addressed. :)

  • Absolutely - healthy discussion of the pros and cons is exactly what's here for! I'm merely suggesting an alternate view for those may have closed the door based on the one video we've seen. Since Luis' apps are so beloved around here, I just want to provide benefit of the doubt.

Now go about your business - nothing to see here!

His apps are also toward the £20 mark, so fall into that category of needing to be more than just a bit of fun. As I’m sure the great man would agree. :)

This app, with the bells and whistles we are hoping for, could fill an important gap for lots of us dabblers. As opposed to the ‘real world instrument’ players such as yourself. Obviously, those with your skills would likely be able to tell the difference between a ‘real’ bass and this, but the closer Luis can get the better for all.

    Onwards!

That would be badass. If it could do that I would buy it just to jam with.

    Webster said Soon is:

    1) in or after a short time.

Well, hope we get some more info... SOON.

Personally, I think this will change everything.

  • Any more news on this.... Hope it doesn't become a Rayzoon (Jamstix) JamBassist... That never came..

  • i've now got lots of the LB drummers and iBassist. Latest update very cool.

Here is a feature suggestion for future versions - in situations where two or three of the LB apps are running with one of them being iBassist:

Just like you have the IAA host-app icon visible for navigating between IAA host and iBass etc. Would it be possible to automatically add an icon for any of the LumBeat drummer apps that are open and synced to Ableton Link - and playing - in order that one could switch from iBassist to - say SoftDrummer without going through any IAA host like AUM?

If you added the ability to bring to the front any LB app from any other LB app this wold make flipping between them easier.

And if you add a BIG fader on the left or right of the main drummer/bassist app page too - in order to quickly adjust output volume of the app - in some situations it might well be much more feasible to not use an IAA host at all 🙂

Especially true if you added a special page to each LB app that could remotely control the volume of the other apps as well as the one in the foreground - from one page ( using interprocess messaging etc ) .

Maybe the volume thing is overkill but then again for quick jams involving me on my guitar - iBassist and an iDrummer -this might be enough - and simpler

you can actually "write out" your own bass lines via the pattern editor on screen !

  • Sometimes when I’m writing a song I’ll put down a drum track and then some chords with Pads or maybe an Arp playing to get the ball rolling. This is the same deal except FUNKIER. Love this app and I play Bass, just not like Larry Graham.
