Stream audio between MBP (OSx) and iOS

Excuse the very amateur question here... This topic has probably been beat to death somewhere but I haven't found it yet...

Is there any way to feed audio from an app on OSX to IOS without leaving the digital realm or using digital audio outs on a soundcard? Basically, would love to use a Soundflower like solution to get audio from osx into iOS for processing / mixing. Or the other way around, stream out of iOS into the MBP, but prefer to process in iOS. Basically, my soundcard for iOS is a stereo input situation, and I'd like to use it for vocals, as well as final / master effects on a signal coming from AbeLive. Also, when plugging MBP built in audio out to iOS soundcard in, getting quite a bit of ground hum like hiss etc... Would love to not even hit dacs at all until inside iOS. I assume there are a lot of reasons this isn't allowed, most of which have nothing to do with me (thinking copyright protection like many other reasons Apple prevents you from moving audio or video between devices).

Nonetheless, I would love to hear if there are some ways to do this without being super convaluted, or any hope for a solution in the future...

Another way to think of it / cool idea: A way to share a single soundcard between 2 devices - I'm using the Novation 2x4... How cool would it be to route main usb port to iPad, then just plug in a MBPro to one of the 3 usb ports (would need a usb turnaround and a simple routing system in OSX Audio Preferences...or something, I'm not trained in this area) and see it show up in AB or AUM or whatever...

Maybe someday we can even share free processing power between several devices. Now that is probably crazy talk unless we venture out of Apples warm (and jealous) bosom.

  • I use the optical out of the mbp (the headphone jack is optical out) into a behringer uca 202 then usb into the iPad. They sell an optical cable specifically for the headphone jack.

The newer models doesn´t have the optical out. Apple way to remove things :(

I'm not sure if this is what the OP is looking for, but why can't you just hook up an iOS device to your Mac with a lightning cable, and then you have digital audio going both ways.

I hook up my iPad to my Mac sometimes and in Logic, I can receive and send audio from or to the iPad.

I didn't think Idam went both ways. I've had iPad going into Mac with the lightning cable but never got it to go the other way.

It's been a while since I last did this, but I'm pretty sure that I was sending audio from Logic into my iPad, and there it was being processed by an effect I was using, and then the audio was being sent back into logic onto a track.

I might be mistaken though. I also have an iconnect device, so perhaps I was using that.

  • I think IDAM is the simplest solution. Hook it up with lighting cable. It works with Ableton. Only 1 audio channel if im right.
I have a MBP, a Mac mini and an iPad air1, and i think about buying the Iconnect audio4+. It has 2 dedicated inputs to hook up 2 iPads or 2 Mac's or a combination. You can also hook up a midi device or midi-hub. For my case a Novation Launchkey mini. I currently use a Roland Duo Capture EX, but too limited for my setup.
With the Connect audio4+, I can hook up the MBP and the Mac-mini, and the Launchkey, and additional an iPad with IDAM. I also have a Roland MC303, wich i can also connect to the Iconnect audio4+ (midiport on the backside and audio on the front)

  • Actually, sending to the mac would be great, will try this eve...

  • I was just messing around with this today before I saw this thread. I don’t have Ableton, but with Logic plugging the iPad into the MacBook with a lightening/USB cable (no interface needed) allows direct two-way MIDI and audio both. It was so cool and fun I was almost late to work

  • I can’t remember? Can Studiomux or musicIO pass digital audio to and from a Mac to an iPad? I will have to look into it again.

Are you sure it’s possible to send audio from Mac into your iPad? I can only get it to work by sending audio from iPad to Mac. Midi works both ways.

Studiomux works both ways with audio and midi without problems.

Yeah I was wrong. MIDI works both ways, but (live) audio is iPad->Mac only via lightening/USB.
