IDAM is great

Wanted to see if i could route multiple audio sources in alongside my Focusrite Audio interface...and well you can.

Just create an Aggregate Device in your Midi/Audio utility and you can have audio from 2 iPads and from your Audio Interface connect with Ableton Live.

Noodling joy joy Friday nights

  • Hell yeah. It’s what makes iOS music production so cool, the possibilities are endless. You can use it like I pretty much am: as the centerpiece of home studio where it runs the DAW, virtual instruments via AU, etc., file storage/distribution & mastering. A single iPad can be used as a live instrument with apps like Neo-Soul Keys, in a live context with MIDI & hardware integration and also like you’re doing where multiple iPads can be linked up with a outboard computer DAW and used like de facto MIDI instruments/hardware for studio & live work.

Thanks for showing the setup in detail the @echoopera, looks very cool.

  • Agree - IDAM is great, I never have any problems.

  • The 18i8 is such a great interface.

  • Will try this out. Thanks!

  • How are your ipads connected? If im right, the macbook is connected to the 18i8 with the usb port? I see that the moog apps come in through channels 1/2 and 3/4.

They’re plugged in to a USB hub and that is plugged in to the MacBook Pro.

I too would love to see the schematic on this. Just starting to assemble a desktop studio. At the moment the Digitakt, the ipad, the laptop, the interface are all sitting on the same desk. Not actually connected yet. They’re just kind of getting accustomed to one another.

  • And here's the resulting little experiment using 2 iPads connected via IDAM into an Aggregated device to combine 3 Sound sources as one into Ableton Live.

  • Nice track. Subtile and lush. All the little noises at the background.

  • I like it too.

I like it, and have used it a lot, but I get “creeping latency” (increased latency over time) with IDAM. It might take an hour or more to start to become noticeable, but when I am doing all-day sessions, I have to reboot from time to time, and then things get snappy again. I also get the problem with Studiomux, but it takes much longer before it shows up. That’s why I still prefer Studiomux over IDAM.

This is with an Air 1 and El Capitan on the Mac. I heard one person who said his creeping latency problems went away after upgrading to High Sierra, but I have heard from another user who says the problem is still there with High Sierra. I haven’t tested lately and I have held off updating to High Sierra for other reasons, but might be tempted to take the plunge if I knew it would actually fix the problem. For now am mostly content and I can get work done by using Studiomux and rebooting from time to time during long sessions.

    Sounds really Fab. :)

  • Thanks everyone for giving it a listen. I’ll try and post a vid of the Aggregation setup process soon.

  • Question: Hooked up iPad to MBP with IDAM (lightning cable). I choose in Ableton the iPad as ext.audio-in source. When i start an App (Ruismaker FM), i can see audio coming into Ableton. But when i leave the App, and start another one (MV08), there's no more audio coming into Ableton. I have to disconnect the iPad in the Audio/Midi configuration tool (MBP), reconnect it, and reselect the audio-in source in Ableton. Is that normal?
Offcourse there's the possibility to switch apps in AUM or Audiobus.

Is Background audio set to ON for MV08. In this particular setup I’d route everything out of AUM

Yes, it's on. I think for the moment, i should run everything through AUM, so app switching is incapsulated.
