Need suggestions: sequencer for AUM
i used rozetta cells lately, but i need piano roll-ish sequencer (have velocity per note, program change, etc).Is there any type of this which can be act as clock “slave” to aum like rozetta?
I consider Xequence, but cant be as a slave. Maybe Modstep or Genome? Or any other suggestions..

This may come as a surprise, but I’m gonna say BeatHawk. Its piano roll is surprisingly good, and you have the choice of IAA or AU. You didn’t specify iPhone or iPad, but it will work on either. Just enable midi out, and IAA/AU Sync.
Xequence would be my first suggestion if you didn’t need it to slave.
Xequence for sure. Its interface is like how Nanostudio’s sequencer was. It’s also pretty easy to set up.
I'm playing with Modstep the last few days and I think that it is the ultimate sequencer in iOS environment

Yeah, for sure! Maybe one of the biggest lacks of Modstep. But even without undo, it's a powerful midi sequencer. At least, with my workflow
You can also use KRFT.
BeatHawk isn't my go to stand alone Daw but I agree its a great sequencer for AUM, especially using it as an AU, and I really like the song arranger in it. Ive tried other external IOS sequencers for AUM, but using BeatHawk as an AU is a lot more seamless. I did try Xequencer for a bit, but when BeatHawk added midi output for AUV3 it became my go to sequencer for AUM, along with using various Rozeta apps.
Before posting that suggestion I set up a test jam (which has turned out to be hella great and the beginning of my next finished track). IPad Air 2, Model D AU, MV08 AU + FAC Transient, RedShrike AU, BeatHawk using midi out, sync, and three internal samples. CPU hovering around 50% when not playing, 75% when playing. I stopped playback and pulled BeatHawk out. CPU did not change measurably - still around 50% when idle.
So, I don’t think BeatHawk is contributing too badly to the CPU usage considering removing it made almost no change. The best thing is complete session save and recall. Just save the session then recall it - instantly back where you started. I did have one crash of BeatHawk AU when trying to clear multiple pads at a time, so it’s a good idea to save that AUM session often. As long as I only clear one pad at a time, then return to the main screen, BeatHawk has been rock solid.
It’s taken me awhile to get used to Beathawk’s piano roll again, but it works as well as any other once you get the controls down. The really great thing is you have the choice of using the AUM transport or the BeatHawk transport. When recording or editing notes in BeatHawk, I’ve used the BeatHawk transport. That piano roll allows you to return to any point in time just by touching the timeline - great for tweaking notes and timing.
Modstep is also a great choice.
Xequence is still an excellent choice if you can shift your thinking to driving the clock from it rather than from AUM.

I like to “watch” the aum page mainly so i can see and control everything..this is why i need the sequencer to be as a slave so i dont have tho switching app/ open the au sequencer page. Can beathawk’s pattern/pad triggered by midi learn? So i can use my keyboard pads to play/stop loops
Just affect AUM keyboard by pressing keyboard icon on BH AUM’s screen top left button (it will become yellow) and go to BeatHawk settings and make sure « send Omni on pads » is checked. This will send each note played to each BeatHawk pad.
Uncheck that option if you want midi to be sent on a specific pad (« send to selected pad » must be checked), for playing melodic instruments.

I was looking to be able to start and switch phrases from AUM. I already own Modstep, and @ 0tolerance4silence helped me get it sorted out. In this case, using the piano from AUM, no externa, keyboard, it’s even easier with an external keyboard. This is the link.

Modstep is great, but might be a bit overwhelming. I looked into Atom and Riffer but I don’t think you can switch sequences in those. Ideally I’d want an AU3 sequencer that would let me switch sequences. Rozetta is great but sometimes you just a good old piano roll...
