How To Connect 5 MIDI Keyboards to Your iPad At The Same Time

Trying out my new Powered USB Hub with four ports. So I connected my four wired keyboards then also used the Seaboard block via Bluetooth to get the fifth.

  • They are all on a different midi channel i suppose?

  • If a device has it's own midi-port there is no need to worry about the midi-channels, just select the port...

  • CCK 3 does supply power to the connected devices, not only iPad. I had Zoom U24 and Native Instruments Komplete 6 powering off it no problem. The only thing is that the iPad must be unlocked.

  • @Frenq What @Samu said, no need to worry about midi channels for this, just select the destination device

  • @supanorton right I never knew that, this one isn’t unlocked, do you mean Jail Broken then?

He means that the screen is open and hasn't gone to 'sleep'.

  • @SpookyZoo Ah right OK, what I meant is that the actual “lightning” part doesn’t supply power, I know the USB bit does, I mean I don’t think I could plug an iRig HD into the lightning connector and then all the midi into the USB bit

My iRig Pro IO is able to be connected to my iPhone with its lighting cable or with its usb cable on cck3, even if it’s not documented by IKM. I use usb/cck3 to plug a powerbank and have a mobile long battery life setup with this iRig. Cck3 allows to not use iRig internal AAA batteries, and to give phantom power to condenser mike. This iRig even works with a Nanokey, both plugged on non powered usb hub which is on cck3. But I also tried with their latest iRig Pre HD and it didn’t work with usb cable to iPhone/cck3 at all, only lightning. You could try with your iRig HD.

Doug, if you plug the powered CCK into the iPad and then plug an interface that doesn’t work with the older (not powered) CCK, it will work.

This means that the CCK 3 indeed sends some power towards the periferalls and if used, the powered hub is superfluous and you can just use a passive one if you want more USB inputs.

I don’t have exact measurements of how much power but I’ve had Zoom u24 and Korg Nanokontrol together feeding off it alright.

Haha, we’ve been confused before. I’ve certainly mixed people up here before too. The crappy eyesight doesn’t help.

Can you walk me through how to connect a USB controller and the Zoom U-24 to an iPad? I'm assuming a hub is required?

iPad-to->CCK3-to->USBACTIVEHUB, then connect your controllers and the Zoom U24 to the free HUB ports.
Connect your Zoom U24 main outs to active speakers or other sound system. Works great with very good sound! Much better as using the iPad Phone/audio out. iPad apps see the Zoom and all the controllers so you can configure this in your apps. Hope this helps.
