Spontaneous Sampling of Anything on Apple Devices

It’s bothered me for some time now that all day I listen to music or watch YouTube or tv on my devices and I hear a loop I want to sample, but the best I ever do is make a note of it or put it in a playlist for later—an ever growing list of homework I never get to.

So I stupidly just realized that it doesn’t have to be that way! Better to grab samples in real time, rather than downloading bigger files later and finding the loop again (if you even can).

iPhone/iPad:

  • Put screen record in control center
  • Record while playing just the audio or video clip you need. It works for Spotify, YouTube, etc.
  • Now you have a clip and you can open just the audio in audioshare
  • Done. No notes, no downloading, and much less to edit.

Mac:

  • Get Menubus.audio
  • It has a free version that does system wide recording (and even supports plugins)
  • Clip your samples in real-time, much less work to edit.

Thanks so much for the tip! This is so fucking great!!! You disable microphone audio and it records the internal audio! I can't believe I wasn't aware of it. There are so much posts about how to record from [you know which audio sources] but I never heard about this (???). After a simple test the only problem I saw is the audio is created in mp4 format which is not supported in BM3...

Thanks for heads up! So this records stereo/equivalent quality to recording YouTube from iPad > Desktop daw? If so I'll drop the $ on it right now..

Beat Time! works great, grab it while it still works.

I heard that screen recording is in mono?

I don’t get any sound using screen record in iPhone. It automatically cuts off when it starts recording.

  • Understand, this is being presented not really to say it’s the “best” way, I understand there are better ones.

But mono and even reduced quality aren’t nearly enough to make it a dealbreaker, for me at least. It’s the mere fact that it’s INSTANTANEOUS. That stands for a lot. All I do is swipe up at ANY time and press record. It’s practical to do at any time in seconds. More samples. More music.

Hell, even if you plan on getting a better version later it’s still a real way to record a piece of sound that you like and you can hear right away, even just as a note.

Anyway I thought it was important and I never see anyone mention it anywhere. I literally just had to realize that it was possible. And then try it.

  • Screen Recording definitely records in mono. For YouTube videos, I use a YouTube to Dropbox converter for my samples

Same feeling here, didn’t know this trick which is pretty obvious. For me “simplicity” is king. Thanks for posting this!

Handy tip indeed, I didn't mean to knock it back.

Kind of weird Apple did the mono limitation on something that could have been so useful to the likes of us ... but, Apple ...

  • Screen recording and files are the two things tempting me to risk updating to iOS 11 but Im still not sure if its worth it, everything else is working just fine, who knows what the trade off will be.

With Player Extreme you can download youtube videos then send them to audioshare

It’s one of the options in /settings/control center/customize

I didn’t realize it was an option till yesterday. Which is really what sets it off the chain. Swipe, tap, done.

  • I have a weird app that generates random noise but it's not useable in any daw in iOS, no au or iaa, I screen recorded the audio a while ago but this particular sound needs to be stereo to keep the panning and stuff. But it works for when it doesn't matter, ima see if beat time can solve this random app recording problem 🙌

Gotcha. I already have it there. I guess I thought you were referring to the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. My bad. Thanks for the response.

Obviously we still need a solution for internal sound to be recorded. I’m on latest os and this behaviour is consistent in both phone and 2nd gen iPad Pro.

Downloading now. Maybe we should remove all refs to the app in this thread and keep apple off the scent?

That would be wise for sure.

  • I woke up this afternoon, saw numerous Audiobus notifications in my inbox, and asked myself "What in the hell did I do...this time?"
I'm glad to see it was a good thing 😃

  • edited June 2018

I believe that certain apps will not allow sound recording if using the internal iOS screen recorder. I tried to screen record from the music app, playing back a song in my library, but the screen recording did not capture any sound at all. Copyright issues perhaps, and certain apps do not allow recording of audio?

As for the mono sound, might that have something to do with the other channel being used to record the internal mic, if that option is enabled?
