IPad Interface 2018?
Hi all.
I'm wondering what a good solution is for my iPad interface. Is a dock style the way to go or something else. I was thinking of going with the irig keys i/o that way I have a keyboard also which I need anyway. What are you all using or have found to be a good, solid solution?

I use a Zoom U24 with an Apple CCK3 dongle (oh my
) and a powerd usb hub with 3 usb keyboards and a launchpad. Serves me well and has great sound. Be aware of the app addiction.
I prefer a normal interface with midi ports in it(not necessary for everyones setup ofc), hooked to a powered usb hub where i can also put other usb gear on.
I might be leaning towards a standard interface and the powered USB hub as it's pretty straightforward and I can get a standard interface for peanuts.
I'm still pretty pleased with my Ica4+ from iconnectivity.
Second the Ica4+ its tits.
I have my ex’s feelings on the ICA4+, although it could potentially do almost anything, mine was the central hub of my home rig but I recently sold mine as I’ve simplified my set up as I found it was taking as much time to set up the routing as I would spend making music/recording music.
However that could be down to me rather than the box, sometimes you click with things and sometimes you don’t.
The setup handling is admittedly not very convenient. Takes too much time to switch between screens and to read out current state. Appears to not auto-save the most recent settings and an explicite save resets the unit in the middle of a session. But at least it returns correctly.
Faders sometimes 'sleep' at a wrong position and may need a tap to wakeup.
Those are no show-stppers in the studio (and hardly needed 'live'), but spoil the user experience a bit.
Regarding the matrix mystery, it's a 2 sided sword: iConnectivity tries to provide a supposed group of 'most users' with a default setup to ease their start.
Which in turn prevents them to get familiar with that matrix thingy.
In my case it helped to completely blank the routing and add only the lines I use.
Took some time to figure out, but brings the advantage that you KNOW your audio path from input to monitor output.
After that it's really smooth to add an(y) additional pathes or rewire it for a specific purpose.
There are screens involved in this interface?
They may be organized as Tabs, but each covers a different context: Audio Settings, Routing, Mixer, Midi.
Switching between them (and initial invocation) brings up the familiar dialing icon and 'reading....' for several seconds.
Functionality is great, but implementation... well
Another vote for the Zoom U24 with a CCK. I've tried a number of different interfaces, but this one meets my needs the best so far (with midi in/out, phantom mic power and flexible connectivity) and very reasonable price. I also still like and use a Behringer is202 istudio, which has always performed well with a 30pin to lightning adapter.
For controllers I now have multiple bluetooth connections provided by Yamaha adapters - UDBT01 (the USB Midi for a novation launchkey mini and a Line 6 FBV2 shortboard foot controller) and MDBT01 (the midi DIN for an Evolution UC-33 knob controller and anything else with a 5pin DIN midi). Also an old iPhone 4s for the drum pads from an AKAI MPC fly over Bluetooth (using midimttr app). All works great and virtually cable free. Also battery powered with minirig speakers, but that's another story...
Most importantly, I can flick on the power and start making music in seconds, many of my previous attempts with other interfaces involved lengthy periods of unplugging, replugging and head scratching, generally killing the music making moment.
I love my Novation 2x4... The 3 powered usb ports mean I have plenty of midi control options... The only downside is no pre-amps for audio in, but I just use a preamp upstream.
Question for the ica4+ users: Has anyone tried using it with an iPad and a Macbook pro simultaneously as the manufacturer advertises? I'd love to use a single soundcard for my Ableton/Maschine > iPad/Aum stuff...
I’ve nad a few in the last few years. At the moment I’m using Akai EIE (non Pro) or Zoom U-24 if I don’t need 4 ins and outs.
Zoom is great as can be powered by batteries or CCK3 in USB mode.
Steer clear from Behringer UMC404HD. Several users experienced issues with it.
@scottsunn: I have the ICMidi4+, which lets you connect three devices (iPad, iPad, Mac) at the same time, and use it this way mostly. After setting this up, it’s a joy to use, very smooth sailing. I also don‘t have lags, when using iConfig, it’s complicated to understand completely, but it works without hiccups, once you get the basic idea of the routing etc.
Lately I‘ve found I can have four tracks run separately from iPad (AUM) into the Mac, for further processing there, it‘s beautiful!
