WHO ARE YOU? And Why Don't you Say Something!!

It amazes me that threads like StepPoly and Free Sample Fodder have been viewed by 10k and 13k viewers respectively, yet on this forum we mostly hear from a few dozen members. Not that I really mind, it makes the forum a rather cozy place with personalities I have come to respect and admire, lovers and curmudgeons alike. Still, I wonder if you precious few really take in the reach and impact this forum has and the gift your insights are to apparently thousands of silent attendees who never say a word.

I should have titled this thread: ARK OF COVENENT FOUND! iOS Synth Inside!
And It's Free!! Then maybe some of these spectral thousands would tune in and could explain their silence. Apparently they know to come here for valued opinions on new releases. Yet so few contribute. Not even a word of thanks to the many knowledgeable gems to be found on this site. They can't be shy. Shy is so twentieth century!

Well, it's a gobble gobble world and move on, isn't it? but that can't the only reason.... Your thoughts? And for those unwashed masses who choose to remain silent I thank you!

Yah i think that reflects views, not viewers and search engine bot hits may count as views...?

  • TBH, this is the only place I AM vocal! It can be daunting to find solutions to problems by experimenting, and when I can't find it here and then figure it out for myself, I want others not to have to slog through trial and error. So I try to describe what I've done in the hope it will help others.

  • Even though it is views and not individual viewers, I still suspect there are quite a few silent observers.

  • I have been a member of the forum for years, and it’s true that there are some lovely, helpful, communal folks here. I do absorb a lot of helpful info and should recognise that to those that help more often.

Having said that, (among some other things such as young family and other hobbies) in increase of activity and discussion which I find antagonistic, means I interact less and spend less time on the forum. It’s still a great place, but that’s one lurkers view :)

  • Many people are shy perhaps. Or maybe they don't have anything of value to add that hasn't already been said. Or maybe many people are just lazy and they prefer to read instead of actually having to type out a few words. Or maybe many people have poor grammar skills and they're embarrassed or incapable of typing in English?

I don't know. I'm just throwing things out there.

  • I check out the forum daily and look at most threads but don't say much because I simply don't have much to contribute. I'm relatively new to synths and related stuff so I'm trying to learn first.

  • The other 12,965 viewers are Russian bots gathering intel and waiting for the next election cycle of a major power before they activate.

I'm on another, non-musical forum where Russian trolls do appear regularly. I'm always kind of shocked that they even bother with that place, but who can argue with success?

  • Perhaps people have a life that includes other things as well and spread their interests accordingly.

That’s crazy talk right there. :D

  • I’m mostly a lurker although I’ll contribute on occasion. Usually though I feel mostly out of my league in the types of forums I visit. I can’t imagine having much useful stuff to say in the company of professional musicians and software developers. Even as a lurker you get attached to certain people. For years I almost felt I knew a lot of the Ableton regulars before the forum died. These days I mostly visit here, subsekt, and a few Reddit’s (techno, Ableton & sounddesign).

  • I bet lots of readers don't even have an account here, they may just lurk or arrived here from a search. Heard a statistic about online forums that something like only 1 in 100 people will sign up for an account and then only 1 in 10 of those people will actually post.

  • Writing on the iPad (and on the phone) is a PITA. I don't tend to contribute unless I fire the forum up on a real computer, and that's usually for work, not IOS music.

I’m mostly a lurker - less than 20 posts to date - for a couple of reasons:
A - I’m not particularly confident about the topics being discussed, as I’m fairly new to electronic music production generally
    and
B - I’m not particularly confident in my ability to communicate my thoughts accurately on here, being dyslexic and finding written language far less natural than actual spoken conversations. There have been several instances where I’ve gone to post, but bottled it cos I didn’t feel like I was saying it properly...

  • Sometimes I wish I had just remained a lurker... I feel like all I do is bang on about AUs and randomization. I need to pipe down a little as I love reading the great info from my more knowledgeable fellow members.

The BM3 forum also has some amazingly talented and knowledgeable producers as well although it is a much smaller community. I also enjoy the iOS Musicians group on FB, lots of cross over with the people here.

  • For information-based sites, I'm sure it's completely normal to have thousands of more views than replies. This forum seems abnormally chatty.

I likes sinths and very bass sinths. Butt i dont rite so gud. Is just sayin! :D

  • I’ll post three things one day and then be silent for a week or two. There are times when this forum gets contentious and I have to restrain myself from commenting so that I don’t get sucked into the disputes.

  • Yeah, I think I need to post more frequently. :D

  • we are just poor bot ghosts running the web all ways round to find an outdoor.

  • consider the Quakers ...

"In the stillness we open our hearts and lives to new insights and guidance. Sometimes we are moved to share what we discover with those present. We call this 'ministry'. We listen to what everyone has to say to find its meaning for us. Anyone can give ministry, including visitors."

    ... BassQuakers ;))

  • Music can be a solitary pastime unless you are in a band and have the social intercourse eg opportunity to talk face to face readily available. Reading is a similar interest but at least there are book clubs to provide the opportunity to communicate.

I think there are many of us who use this information as a provider of information. When I have a problem ios/music/app wise I find that the solution has either already been aired -or can be found easily by searching for the solution without needing to raise a comment. In other words, I am not so deep into the subject/interest that I have a ready supply of relevant and unique topics to initiate.

Mind you, I think that is could become pretty easy to get into the habit of posting comments all the time, though.

There is also a large element of social club here. People who enjoy a bit of banter, sometimes robust OT discussion, but are not interested in the venal crap of social media in general. Almost always, people manage themselves civilly when posting here, respecting the forum.

We have a bunch of regulars, not unlike the cast of a soap, with their own distinct personalities and expertise, all united by love of music making, and happily, there are very few assholes by comparison with anywhere else on-line.

    This.

I often stop by to chat in between making some music. I’m getting older and my head has health problems, so stopping by here to chew the fat gives it a break. I’ve even occasionally chatted to a few of the guys here outside of the site!

I’ve had some really bad problems with some people on social media. AB Forums, while still having its share of argumentative folk, is nothing like the rest of the internet! Even when we disagree here, we are usually chatting on another topic the next day :)

    This.

I’d add that it becomes easy to spot the folk who are up for a respectful discussion, as opposed to the few who are only on-line to bait others. Once ID’d, the latter usually sod off to the frenzy of Twater or FaceTube. ;)

Well that’s a very eloquently written post there. It would great to hear you post more.

  • I second Matt_Fletcher @Longskatedeath! Your post is very well written. Even if not, no fear. All seems acceptable here. Your willingness to disclose a challenge you have shows your quality. If I listed my difficulties in life... Well, no matter!

I read and contribute to this forum (even though I am a total newbie) for several reasons. 1. I am totally fascinated by a technology (both iOS and the Internet) that can be so democratic and far reaching.as a young musician I longed for these tools to be within my grasp but they simply did not exist. I remember a project in JHS I did to make a car that would respond to a light source... A rather primitive remote control...
Can you imagine! This stuff simply was not in the imagination of anybody! To show how times have changed, the next year I did a science project to determine the effects of trance on mice. My teacher happily gave me several beautiful glass syringes and needles while the local pharmacist handed over a can of ether and a bottle of Thorazine. No questions asked! I was 13!
(None of the mice made it if you are interested).

    1. I have been playing jazz for fifty years and I love making stuff up out of parts lying around (Gilbert chemistry sets, Erector Set
Model airplanes and ships as a kid) and I find it exquisitely pleasure able to have something like Thor or Miroslav Philharmonik and Cubasis to fool around with and make some unexpected noise.

    2. Though my experience in forums is limited I really like the Dramatists'Guild personae here. Such a good feeling.

    3. And, if you have read any of my posts, I like to write and ask questions.

So, @Longskate death, and all you others out there, you may have something really valuable to contribute. Your unique take on iOS, your personal experience, what you like and don't like, and any other observations that make you curious about music making and the folks who do it on tablets and phones.

So, c'mon, speak up. We all like to listen.
