Comments
Why would you expect that to work, @vejichan? Just curious
@Wasboy Thanks for making me spit soda all over my desk.
Sounds nice. A little like Styx - Suite Madame Blue which is a great song. No offense if that's an original song.
Ah! Apologies, @vejichan. My clairvoyant's hat is at the cleaners at the moment.
OK. Levity aside, did you notice, in that clip, that the player was selecting various Virtual MIDI apps from a list of available apps? That's only possible if you've purchased the Quadroplay IAP for Guitarism. You have Quadroplay, right? Assuming you have, did you select GarageBand from the list of apps? I suspect you did not because I don't think GB supports Virtual MIDI so it would not show up in the list. GB works with external MIDI sources (e.g. a USB MIDI keyboard) but not with other apps.
It might be that the MidiBridge app can help driving GB but someone else with MidiBridge expertise will have to advise on that score. I've no idea.
You can play garageband midi in with guitarism midi out if you use midibridge.
In midibridge, connect midibridge in to midibridge out. Then in guitarism choose midibridge for your output.
I've just bought the Quadroplay IAP to test this out and it appears that MidiBridge isn't needed at all. Selecting "guitarism MIDI out", in Guitarism's MIDI output list is sufficient.
Edit: In addition, Guitarism's Help page for Quadroplay has a wealth of information and advice on MIDI for iOS. Marvellous things, Help pages
i'm missing something.. how did you get it to work?
also does Quadroplay iap work w/4th gen ipod touch?
D'oh! You're right Washboy! Midibridge isn't needed! I thought I used something in the past that required midi bridge to play in garageband.... Oh well - thanks for double checking!
Vejichan, Launch Garageband, select an instrument (keyboard)
Launch Guitarism, go to 4p
Select midi out, like Washboy indicated.
Hit the play button in guitarism to strum the chord. You may want to turn off audio in the guitarism instrument. You should be hearing garageband. Make sure you allow garageband to run in background (under the wrench).
Is that what you've been using here - a 4th gen. iPod Touch?
I followed the detailed instructions on the Quadroplay help page, under the heading, "Playing GarageBand from guitarism". I have an iPad.
I see those instructions begin with, "Note: GarageBand only supports MIDI on iPhone 4S+ / iPad 2+".
Let's hope that @Rhism is around somewhere and can advise you further. Unfortunately, I have to go. Good luck.
@Washboy.Cubasis can send virtual midi to garageband and control the instruments.
@Vejichan If you tap the '4P' button in guitarism's guitar screen you can test out the MIDI connectivity before you buy the IAP. As @Washboy said earlier (and as seen in the guitarism Quadroplay instructions):
1) Launch GB
2) Set the GB instrument to keyboard
3) Enable "Run in Background" in GB
4) In guitarism go to 4P, set the "Notes output" to "guitarism MIDI out" and tap the large Play button in the corner
You should hear the active GB instrument playing. If you hear guitarism itself when you tap Play, then make sure the "Mute Guitarism" option on the left is set to "Yes". By default it should be "Yes" but just in case you had switched that off when trying different things out.
FYI the point about GB only supporting MIDI on iPhone4S / iPad2 is because on earlier devices it doesn't even show the "Run in Background" option. If it's showing that option on @Vejichan's device then it should work fine with MIDI too.
@commonstookie: Yes, until I checked, I thought GB only supports CoreMIDI. That's why I bought Guitarism's Quadroplay IAP - so I could be sure I wasn't giving @vejichan a bum steer. I had been, hence my later post with confirmation that what (s)he was trying to do is very much possible.
I always get confused by CoreMIDI vs. VirtualMIDI But I've just discovered this article:
http://iosmusicandyou.com/2013/01/24/ipad-iphone-music-app-tutorial-an-overview-of-virtual-midi/
I've yet to read it thoroughly but I looks like a pretty definitive explanation.
Thanks guitarism. I did set the guitar on mute,,,that did it. Is there anyway to play notes instead of chords in guitarism.. And on my ipad mini guitarism does work in GB but on iPod touch 4th gen it doesn't...because it doesn't have the run in the background option. Is there anyway to around this?
The good-natured help responses and patience from experienced forum members to noobies who are unable to read help files before asking how to walk never ceases to amaze me...lol
@Vejichan guitarism is chords-only for now, you can of course pick individual strings one at a time for arpeggios but it doesn't have a fretboard-style interface yet. If you want a fretboard interface with MIDI out you should try Live Guitar from @SecretBaseDesign. Looks like it's just $0.99 right now (normally priced much higher) so definitely grab it while it's hot!
GB doesn't offer the Run in Background option on older devices, presumably for performance reasons. That's a limitation of GB that only Apple can change. You could try running AB on your device, then loading up GB inside AB and then sending it MIDI (since running any app inside AB automatically causes it to "Run in Background") but not sure how well your device will hold up under all that stress.
A better alternative would be to use other MIDI apps on your iPod4 - ThumbJam, iFretless, SampleTank etc... guitarism would work with any of those and they all have great samples, depending on the instrument you were trying to play.
@Jomodu Yep the folks here are pretty awesome Though @Washboy went above and beyond the call of duty by actually buying something to offer correct advice - never seen that before Feel like I need to give him a medal or something!
It would have to be Heavy Medal...
....and a very deep ocean.
@washboy.... Apologies - my comment not aimed at you!
@washboy.good find.agreed, ios midi can still be a bit confusing and frustrating at times.
@Rhism: Thanks for the appreciation. I was happy to buy the 4P IAP. Guitarism is a fun and useful instrument and even more useful with MIDI out
@Jomodu: We're all noobs at some time, about something. It's usually a pleasure for me to help out, if I can, and I often learn something myself, in the process. One thing I've learned recently is that some people don't really need help, they merely crave attention.
