Tap tempo via midi - help required

Hi, very basic question for a lot of you I’m sure - I’m a keyboard player with a fairly complex set up and 3 keyboards used live. Up to now my sounds are usually piano, synth pads, hammond and leads, but now venturing into ARP sounds live. I need to control their tempo via a midi controller (Via tap). I host my apps though AUM, and read somewhere that the tempo of apps can be synced via AUM, but can’t seem to find how this works or indeed if AUM tempo can be changed via a midi controller using tap.
My apps include LAYR, Synthmaster Player, Volt, Probably Synthmaster One in the next day or two too.

What would you suggest is the best way to tap a tempo into the synth apps via midi?

Thanks

Caveat: I haven't done this myself, but you should be able to use MIDIBus or MIDIFire to generate MIDI clock from tapped MIDI messages (notes, CC, PC). You could then use MIDI Link Sync or Link to MIDI to get Ableton Link synchronization going.

I would contact the Audeonic developer to ensure this will work as expected.

  • Loopy and I think DrumJam supports tap tempo via midi. Not sure how to hook all of it up so that it would be the master but I think if you're using Link it should all 'just work'. Even if neither are loaded into AUM.

  • Thanks - my main challenge is how to use a midi controller for ‘tap’ tempo

Do you have LoopyHD and AUM?

Nope, just Aum, synthmaster player, volt, and Layr. Wanting to tap the tempo into them for ARP sounds to sync to a live drummer

  • Like @syrupcore suggested, Loopy can set tap tempo via midi input. It is easy to set up.
I can use AUM internal KB to tap tempo into Loopy. Loopy sends the new tempo back to AUM via Link. Let me know if you get Loopy HD and would like some assistance setting this up with your Midi Controller.

  • Tap tempo in Loopy works very well. Just go to settings, control inputs, (your midi controller), add binding and press the button on the physical controller. I think it is preferable if the midi message is momentary as opposed to toggle. If toggle you might need to assign it twice, once for on and once for off otherwise loopy will only read every other tap hence giving you half the time you want.

Thanks for the help. I’ll give it a go

  • Hey all. Update to this old thread. AUM now supports tap tempo via “MIDI Ctrl > Parameters > Tap Tempo”! Was trying to implement one of these hacks, but then I saw the feature had been implemented since this thread was created.

It was added in April, 2019. 😎
