"Modern Audiobus Remote" -- Constructive Criticism
First I have to say that the current update path for AB3 has been exceptional and really lifts the potential of AB3 not just on a technical level, but also shifts it into a much more future facing direction.
That said, I also feel that Audiobus Remote has slowly and silently fallen behind the current paradigm of usability. It''s still a fantastic tool for workflow convenience at home, but for a few reasons I haven't felt that it's usable in a 'high pressure' setting for quite some time.
@Michael I hope that this post can be insightful and constructively useful.
My reasons and potential solutions are discussed below:
Problem 1:
Waaayy to many apps cluttering up the screen making everything tiny --
AU apps and AB3 Midiflow modules don't have any remote triggers and are rarely needed to be accessed on the screen (pretty much never in live performance). I find that I'm cutting apps from my setup (or finding workarounds like hosting certain apps in other hosts) just for AB:R space considerations. I don't think this is a great situation creatively and forces compromise on quality in order to achieve 'playability' in a live setup.
I can see a potential solution being the ability to toggle apps on and off in AB:R. This would nicely fit into AB3's workflow, as the toggles could just be included in the 'app shortcuts bar' at the top of the screen.
Problem 2:
Unreliable for live performance --
In a home setup environment, I've never had any connectivity issues. However.. I've performed a lot with tech and I've rarely found that I can rely on bluetooth in a live situation. Whether this is due to so many bluetooth networks in one location (audience phones) or what, I've found this to be constant at every single concert I've performed with bluetooth equipment.
I actually did perform quite a lot of concerts with Audiobus Remote previously, in the age before Link and AU. However, inside the last few years it definitely also falls into this category and so while it can be a pleasure to use at home, it is not reliable live (at best flat disconnection, at worst massively delayed responses that fuck with you on a psychological level).
Possible solutions here might be harder.. Could it be connected to AB3 via a 'closed' MIDI implementation? In this case it could be connected by wifi MIDI, ICA4+ setup or traditional MIDI network. That'd outright solve the live reliability problems.
This is in my own experience.
Anyone here want to share their own experiences and insights?

Good to know of Bluetooth in a live situation shortcomings. I’ve always preferred wired solutions as no less for their (however minimal) impact on battery and CPU.
I guess also the fact of needing another device to boot, keep charged, connect etc, didn’t appeal to me.
iOS music making is already relatively complicated as it is.
Just my 5p
Thanks very much for this, @OscarSouth! I do have plans for an updated AB Remote; basically a complete redo of the app. It's going to be a little while coming, though, I'm afraid, as I've got so much on my plate! But believe me, I hear you!
This should be the standard for communicating with developers. Well done.
I personally never (knocks on head) had any issues.
And I am using New iPad with Air 1 hosting AB remote and Air 2 with iPhone 8+ hosting AB remote.
All at once and never an issue.
I am actually lucky for once with something!
I will always use Audiobus as long as there is an AB Remote.
It is a game changer.
Did I read that correctly? You have 4 devices in your setup now?
That is the schizzz, if I understand correctly.
Yes
