Thor MIDI Learn?

Hi there, thor is the synth that actually I kwon better, the only problem is that I can't find a way to assing midi controls to sliders and encoders.
There is a way to assign midi controls to any knob and slider?

  • Hey if you find an answer let me know or even if you find a list of what cc's are assigned would be helpful. I have an axion 49 2nd gen and some of the knobs and faders work but it is random at best.

  • Thor does not implement a learn function, but it has many CCs mapped to the usual suspects and some not so usual (like filter type - not very musical to twiddle that one!).

Somebody posted the CC list here IIRC. But search is not finding it. I did just happen to DL it into GoodReader though. I'll paste the text here:

  • aargh! Lost the newline formatting. Each line begins with a number if you have the patience.

Anybody know how to attach a file to a comment?

  • MidiBridge to the rescue when learn is absent, btw. If your controller is short on patches or difficult to program.

  • Thanks for the list. I have 9 sliders and 9 knobs on my axiom with 20 banks and then 9 sliders and knobs on my nanokontrol with 4 banks. I should be able to control them all. Hahaha.

  • bwaa-haha! Ditto my Graphite + nanos + Quneo. Knobby Heaven:)

  • Thank you very much @dwarman.
Before buying midi bridge I should see If I can change directly the midi values from my master key! ;)

  • I thought about mapping all the knobs and buttons to a hardware button. I am still new to synths and was wondering if there was a top list of parameters to map to start off with learning a synth?

  • Awesome. Now somebody needs to convert the thor section to a nktrl data file so I can upload it to my nanokontrol.

  • Thor MIDI Controller Chart:
    https://app.box.com/s/bg3ham5uyaj4wa3vjobr
I modified Reason's manual to include only Thor.I hope the same CC's apply to the ipad version!

  • Has anybody a pdf version of the Thor web-page manual?

  • I have an MPK Mini. How could I effectively use it's 8 CC knobs to control Thor?

  • If you can edit the cc values on the MPK then you just need to edit them to send the correct cc message to the corresponding control in Thor.

I have a nanoKontrol. It is just time consuming to program every knob, fader, and button.

  • But I also want to control Turnado with CCs 1-8.

  • It seems the MPK has multiple programs. Set one program to transmit on one midi channel for Turnado and then set another one to transmit on a different channel for thor. Then you just switch between the different programs to control each app independently.

    I hope that makes sense.

A quick (and a bit rough) conversion with WEB to PDF app. Sadly, it doesn't keep the hyperlinks.

what a mess, but better than nothing :)

  • Which synths do have midi learn for parameters such as frequency, resonance, etc.? I think Magellan, but on startup after mapping it seemed to lose the path.

  • I really hope they bring midi learn. All of the serious ios synths have it. If I program my mpk mini to control Thor then I'll have to midi relearn all of my other synths. Come on Propellerheads!

  • @supadom I used to have a MPK Mini but I forgot, does the editor let you save multiple profiles?

  • @supadom, alternatively you could use the MidiBridge Holy Mapper function to map your normal MPK CC assignments for Thor. Useful now MB has config save functions.

@CalCutta One either would have to load a profile via PC before using it with thor or possibly use a different midi channel with knobs set to specific cc's. Yes midi Bridge is an option but yet another thing to think about. Thor is definitely a great sounding machine and I'm sure one day gets to be a complete synth solution. It is very versatile but totally misses out on the connectivity front. It is a similar situation to imini which I love yet never use live because of it being abandoned.
I'm happy to have it in the cloud and look forward to the next update.

  • I have been in constant contact with the developers asking about update for Thor, all I got is we working on it. I also think Thor is a powerful synth but due to its lack of features it always get pass by. I don't understand why Thor don't have midi mapping as yet , users been asking for this a long time now. As we touch on Thor I would also talk about Figure, another powerful app but lacking a full ipad version with landscape mode.
Let's hope they could get it together and start a process of timely update for their Apps.

  • ^ sometimes it feels like Propellerheads made Thor as a proof of concept, and once they finished it, they didn't want to pour resources into it.

MIDI learn, half-assed IAA, and preset organization are just some of the things I wish would be fixed. It's a pretty amazing synth, I actually ran through ALL of the Thor tutorials with the iPad version to get a handle on it, but it deserves better than the treatment it's been given up to this point by Propellerheads. Work arounds, including having to use a third-party app, are unnecessary when something is properly developed and supported.

  • Sadly, I find myself going to Tera or Z3TA as my go-to synths, because they just work. It's a shame, because Thor has the ability to be just as powerful (more, actually), but if I can't make it play nice with others, then it's going to just sit there and gather virtual dust.

I made one for my own use, but I'm happy to share. You'll want to use the PDF bookmarks to navigate as the hyperlinks jump to the online HTML manual.
