host dilemma/talk ... Rozeta?

Hi fine folk - I'm hoping you guys can help me out a bit. I'm pretty sure that I've got what I need but would like to talk through this a bit. Bear with me a bit.

Relatively new to the ios platform. Like most new folk I went through the GEE WHIZ! phase and bought a plethora of great great synths. So happy with the majority of them. Also, did the same with hosts, looking for one that speaks to me. I view this as a cost of doing business, if you will. We all need to find the host that works for us.

I have Cubasis, BM3, Xequence. Gadget as well, but I view that as not really a host being that it's closed.

I'm finding that Cubasis is stable does most of what I need. But, for some reason I don't gravitate to it.

BM3 (at this point) is just a vast ocean of overwhelming waves of choice. For some reason, I cannot seem to get into it. Maybe I just need to beat my head against the wall some more.

Xequence just doesn't seem to work for me.

I'd like to try out Rozeta, as I really think I'm missing something. If I installed it in any of the above would I be able to mostly bypass the host and just 'get into' Rozeta and make some music? I sort of thought of Rozeta as a host until I get reading some more.

Your opinions are valued and always interesting. Thanks!

Rozetta isn't a host, you'd use it inside of a host -edit. Yes it's great in BM3 for me at least I use x0x to drive bm3 pads for drums

  • You may want to consider the combination of Rozeta and either ApeMatrix or AUM as the host. I've been experimenting with these setups recently and find that Rozeta can really shine in these kind of modular hosts. BM3 and Cubasis are more like traditional DAWs, where ApeMatrix and AUM are more like a rack...in a way it's like a tabletop setup where each auv3 plugin is a piece of gear and the host is like your MIDI/audio hub, if that makes any sense.

Rozeta with any of the @brambos apps is a great combination. I also like Zeeon and KQDixie because they seem to run very efficiently with Rozeta in ApeMatrix.

    Hopefully this is useful info.

Oh yeah, Audiobus is also a pretty good host ;)

  • You need to check out AUM, apeMatrix, and Audiobus3. These are host apps that are geared toward live jam setups.

Cubasis and BM3 are big DAW apps. They work for the quick live jams too, but are way overkill for me. They are useful for capturing the live jam session though.

Xequence is more of a sequencer, but not really a host. It doesn’t host other apps, just connects to them through Midi.

Rozeta is the most fun, and easiest to use in AUM. Maybe apeMatrix, too, but I lack the experience with that app to really say. Rozeta will get you up and jamming in no time. Then at some point, you will want to save this cool music. You will need to employ the DAW again to capture all the midi streams simultaneously, or record them one at a time to keep them separate midi tracks. AUM and apeMatrix can capture the multitrack audio easily though, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Just Midi is challenging, at this point in time.

Audiobus 3 can, a lot of the time, serve as the glue that holds all of this together. It is a strange situation. I hardly ever just use AB3 as a host, but I find I always need it to complete the chain or signal path when using multiple apps, a host, a sequencer or two, and a DAW. People frequently ask why they would ever need Audiobus as they mistakenly see it as unnecessary or old-school. I can never answer them, since I don’t know exactly what they are trying to do. But when they hit an insurmountable roadblock, it is usually Audiobus that will save the day. You don’t realize how useful it is until you find yourself stuck and Audiobus is the only thing that can help you.

  • Think of Rozeta as various tools to add on top of a host to add more options beyond the host’s piano roll. Don’t like poking notes for drum patterns into a piano-roll, and feel more inspired by a drum machine type of input? Rozeta XOX. Need some inspiration to create more interesting drum patterns? Rozeta Rhythm. Want to experiment with interesting generative sequences? Rozeta Collider and Particles. Want to automate some parameters of an app with flexible LFOs? Rozeta LFO. ...etc, etc, etc.

So, no, not a host substitute, a host enhancer.

I assume you’ve tried GarageBand? It has some really annoying limitations, and the interface is off-putting to me, but I sure can’t argue that it’s not a good host and sequencer.

I’ve settled on Cubasis after a pretty intense effort to adapt to BM3 and Auria Pro as main tool. Cubasis + Rozeta and with help from AB3, AUM, or Ape Matrix to get past its limitations is what has ended up working for me when I actually set out to complete a track.

  • So ... if I wanted to use Cubasis with Rozeta I could? For some reason, I thought they weren't compatible. Excellent. I think I could get Rozeta and try it with Cubasis and if I felt I need more from a "host" then ... I dunno. AUM?

I must be missing something with AUM. It looks like Audiobus on steroids. Do I need it? Doesn't seem like it.

This has been great info everyone. Thanks!

If you like the idea of jamming/improvising and experiencing something more live then AUM is a must.

A good example of it in use is to check out perplexon on YouTube.

Yes, if you’re ok with investing, Audiobus3, AUM, and apeMatrix would be good to have in your toolbox. And though the Rozeta Suite isn’t a host, it extends the capabilities of the host you DO use.

  • I suggest giving BM3 more love !

I know, I know, just when I'm going to drop it I decide against that.
