Recommendations for Desktop Sample Libraries and Instruments

edited June 2018 in Other

Messing with iOS for about a year now and I have come to the realization that I prefer acoustic instruments and higher quality sounds. iOS is awesome for synths and stuff but not so much for this.

So I’m looking back at desktop to invest in some sounds
I have a late 2013 iMac with SSD and 16gb RAM
I have Studio One and Logic Pro DAW

Because of Beathawk on iOS I was looking at uvi falcon and expansion libraries but they seem to get a lot mixed reviews on the quality online.

Looking for stuff to accompany Logic Pro
From my little research it seems Kontakt with some added third party libraries would be the way to go?
Maybe Spectrasonics Keyscape for keys?

high quality acoustic sounds, orchestral, brass, keys, guitar
I like a lot of blusey, funk type stuff. Looking for Good quality but not rediculously expensive quality, I guess mid tier level. I make more hip hop type instrumental music. Not really into the electronic dance genres .

Drop me some names of your favorite libraies or sample library companies!

Thanks.

How much money are you willing to spend is the first question I guess.
From what you say keyscape and komplete 11 might be a good start.

  • I own Falcon and i never use it really beside for the Bohemian Solo Violin and Cello. For sample libraries i would go for Kontakt libraries (mostly the famous ones work with the free player).
You already got a lot stuff in Logic.
Omnisphere covers a lot ground but is not as good as other special libraries in certain areas.
But Keyscape is so great that i could write a love song about it, especially in combo with Omnisphere 2.
But you really should investigate some time in research and of course you-tube is great to explore things you might like.
My favorite companies are so far Heavyovity, Spectrasonics, Spitfire and a few others.
Synth wise there is one to rule them all for me on mac (and everywhere else)...P900. Those brass sounds, strings, organ and even distorted guitar it can create are earth shaking and there isn´t any synth i would say which sounds more analog, powerful, beefy, juicy, crazy whatever.
But don´t buy too much stuff. Just focus on a few tools you like.
Maybe an example of what sound you are after?
But for the better libraries are not cheap for sure. But f.e. i payed €400 for Keyscape but i love it so much that i can´t describe what happens when i play with some of the collector instruments included. They don´t just sound good but are awesome to perform. Microtuning via .tun file is another great thing and lots of funky stuff included.

I am not big fun of huge sample libraries , so can recommend pianoteq (for ...piano!) , and SWAM engine
    http://www.swamengine.com/products/
Had tried the Saxophones in the past and was amazed.
Spicy Guitar Vst is for free and very nice with some post processing giving natural acoustic guitar sounds.

Abbey Road drummer series still sound the most natural to my ears ,plus they run with the free Kontakt player.

I don´t have to be huge always if the engine is great....true.
But f.e. Pianoteq can´t really cover what Keyscape offer for me. But i´m especially in love with the for unqiue and characterful sounding keys i didn´t find anywhere else. Like the WingTack Piano and the toy pianos and other stuff like the belltone pianos i never heard such deeply sampled before.

  • EastWest has been creating Pro sound libraries for many years. They have more products than most pro's have room to store or even audition.

They now offer a subscription model and sounds get dowloaded by request to build a project. I think it start for $25/month with 50% off the first month. not sure about the canceling policy but I'd consider giving it a shot.

There are a lot of reviews of their libraries on the big music mag sites going back many years. They win awards for innovations consistently. They are the big dog in this niche market and now the little guy can afford to play too.

They have a user forum too.

  • Spectrasonics Trillian for bass and Sampletank for general sounds.

  • Well I have over a $1000 saved up
Probably going to hold out till the next big sales to make most purchases
The desktop sample library stuff is pretty daunting, a lot of different choices out there.

Thanks I’m going to check all this stuff out.
I think I’m going to concentrate on orchestral or Brass, Woodwind first
...cinebrass looking pretty good right now

Is there a big difference between the FREE Kontakt player and the full version. Is it worth it to get the full Kontakt if I may not want all the sounds?
Or just buy a couple good libraries and use in the free player?

If you want to build your own sample libraries you need the full Kontakt. You also can do a lot more editing with the full version. There are also a lot free sample libraries and a few cheap which needs the full Kontakt to work.
But in reality i never use much of it and even if i own the full Kontakt (Komplete 11) i just would be fine with the player since all my favorite libraries needs just the player version and i don´t need to dive in deeper as these instruments already offer. I NEVER us the content which came with the full Kontakt. Not that good for me.

Hey, my MacBook is a 2013 with SSD and 16GB RAM like you. Considering getting Omnisphere, Keyscape and Trilian. Just curious to learn if you went ahead and bought any libraries you were thinking about? How do they run on your machine and would you recommend them after using for a while?
