AUM - Anyone else have issues with File Player?

Not sure exactly when this has started (although I suspect that this started after the latest AUM update - but I cant be sure) - and so far haven't managed to work out any obvious cause.

Sometimes when I add a "File Player" node to an AUM project, then tap the node to select and load the sample, AUM locks up just after tapping on the file. I usually have to reboot the iPad for this to start working - simply closing AUM and reopening it has no effect. I find that once it has occurred, even a dummy project with a single node will have the same behavior after restarting AUM.

I'm on an iPad mini 2 (16Gb wifi/3G), iOS 10.3.3, and AUM 1.2.5 - its been doing this with various project files of IAA & AU devices, with both .WAV and .M4A files recording in Audioshare. Sizes of files is pretty moderate - a 4.8 .wav file and 1.5Mb .m4a when I tried just now.

Anyone else having this kind of odd behavior?

  • My first thought was if you are close to running out of storage space, it can cause stuff to act up unexpectedly.

Good call. I couldn’t think of anything that might be the cause.

  • I will double check tomorrow - although quite full, I dont think its that full - I can easily record a couple of takes of ambient meandering and wibbling without any storage nearly full messages. Also if it was disk space capacity then why does it work after a full reboot? The free space is pretty much the same (or so I would have thought).

Its getting to the time when I think a full factory reset and reinstall everything from scratch might be sensible - will get rid of all the "stuff" accumulated. Might even think about leaving Nanostudio (reason why I'm still on iOS 10) and going iOS11. Might. Possibly. Given there still isn't any actual sign of the second coming of NS :-)

  • I don’t really know why, just that it seems to happen. The system may need to cache stuff on the device storage. If the storage is too full, the cache process chokes. Reboot clears the cache, but the amount of available storage space for cache remains dangerously low.
When you record some audio, it seems inconsequential, but that relatively little bit of storage space may be critical to the system if you are very near capacity.

But, like I said, I don’t really know why for sure. I just apply general computer principles to the situation, and system cache on a full drive has always spelled disaster.

  • Cracklepot is correct, the rule of thumb for SSD drives is a whopping 25% free drive space.

  • I've never heard about the 25% rule. But what I don't get is why its suddenly started doing this - I've been using AUM since it came out in 2016 (always on the same iPad) and space has always been an issue - not just now (given I don't upgrade iOS until I have to the damn thing is always downloading the iOS update I don't want....). I can also understand issues streaming the output file (or files if I'm recording multiple channels) as that's putting strain on the disk systems, or if I'm down to the last few Mb. But I'm in effect opening a 5Mb file from within AUM on an iPad with 264Mb free. As CracklePot says - could also be some Cache type thing going on within iOS.

When I have a moment I will do some tests - but given no one else is saying they are having issues it does sound like gremlins with my setup :-)

  • I'll bet it's your cache causing issues. You must have at least 1/2GB free or apps will start to crash.

I almost never have half a gig free :-)

Just strange that it's only AUM, and only loading a file into the file player.

That is strange. You should ask @j_liljedahl what he thinks it could be.

I ment 1 or 2 GB at least. I noticed a lot more crashes with all kind of apps when I'm running out of storage.

The joys of a 16Gb device filled with loads of "stuff".....

  • I have no idea unfortunately. I haven't changed anything related to the FilePlayer recently. If it does freeze and crash, I should be able to see crash reports if this is happening to more than a couple of users. (You are sharing diagnostics with developers, aren't you? :) )

It could be one of those times that iOS simply messes something up by itself, corrupting something in some hidden registry, and the only thing to do is to backup and reinstall (either AUM only, or the whole system).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help...
