Gadget vs. Gadget / iOS vs. MacBook

  • Decisions decisions ... I don’t need Gadget on the Mac but I keep telling myself that what I need is ease, convenience and comfort. Gosh, I sound like an old codger.

On my latest album project I used Lexington quite a lot, and as it went on I found I was using it in preference to almost all other synths in Gadget. If I’d known that at the start I might have used it for everything. I found the mono/poly gadget was slightly disappointing in the end, a bit floppy and lifeless, no bite or balls. I mean, compared to my real one I owned until recently. Iodysseiiii on the other hand is a lot like a real Arp 2800.

    Agree

For me same as M1 and Wavemapper.

    M1 is pretty damn close.

    Wavemapper, not so much.

Ok people, here's a question, and a loaded one:
Who uses Korg Gadget (ios or desktop) with great results? I guess what I'm going for with this question is this an instrument suite where you could stay in it's closed universe (this does not bother me at all - Reason fan) and obtain equally good if not better results than not staying in it's universe?

I'm really having a tough time deciding about whether to jump on the desktop version and to use it in concert with the ios version to finally focus and get *hit done. I dearly love all of my ios synths but find that the time has come to focus and learn. (I have been struggling with this aspect of my ios experience, and in the process bought Beathawk, Cubasis, BM3, Xequence and tons of synths).

I'm not looking for justification to purchase the desktop version, but looking for honest opinions. The teaser for me is Reason and Gadget - together. Linear, loop based, gobs of instruments - it's all there.

Would love to hear your opinions and your music. All styles welcome. I appreciate the attention!

Funnily enough ODYSSEi is the big draw for me. When I bought my MS20 600 years ago it was a toss-up between getting that, or going to the London Synthesizer Centre for an ARP. So having ODYSSEi on the Mac is really tempting, but not getting the standalone UI a bit of a bummer. I do enjoy using it on the iPad though.

Hmmm...sale’s on until August, so a bit of time to head-scratch and fence-sit!

Yes, if you really need the versions with full screen interfaces on Mac, it’s an additional purchase to get the Korg Collection:

    https://www.korg.com/us/products/software/korg_collection/

Totally not worth it, IMO (although you also get the MS20, and Poly 6, which are not part of Gadget).

On iOS, if you buy the stand alone Odyssey, Mono/Poly, M1, etc., you also get the Gadget versions (if you also own Gadget). But if you buy the Mac version of Gadget, you get gadget versions of all the synths, and individual plugins of the gadgets with the full synth engine and presets to use in the DAW of your choice, but not the full screen display of the stand alone synths. It’s not worth it to pay double the cost just to get the full screen display and two extra synths, IMO.

And, yes, I’m with you on the Odyssey. One of my favorite synths ever (in fact the first synth I ever owned and what I learned to program on), and the Korg version is an excellent recreation!

Their iOS recreations are very good - I've still got the MS20 here and the iOS version is spot on.

Thanks for the link - some of the individual synths aren't bad value in the sale - $24.99 for Mono/Poly for example, though Gadget for Mac is a better deal.

I can't see Reason in the list of supported DAW's for Mac Gadget, which is a bit weird considering their latest release...

Well, Reason only added support for VSTs relatively recently, so it could be they are just lagging behind in updating their list. But if Reason is the only Mac DAW you plan on using it with, it might be worth an email to Korg just to be sure.

Over a year since Reason got vst support, and the date on the Korg spec says Feb 2018. Definitely warrants an email query before diving in!
