Central Sample/Preset Access in Apps
Due to the sandbox origins of iOS, apps originally had to each have a copy of a sample. This has resulted in a multitude of approaches by developers as to how to deal with samples in their apps and is just another example of how apps can have non-musical tasks you need to learn. In contrast, these issues have largely been resolved in desktop/laptop OS environments.
The SpaceCraft app was developed using the JUCE framework and you can access the Files app storage location directly from the AU app.
What sorts of more standardized/convenient sample/file access features do you hope developers will add to their apps or what do you think Apple, JUCE, or AudioKit, etc. might do?
Similarly, different apps have different methods and options for saving presets which might also benefit from a more standardized/convenient approach?
Comments
I would hope Apple would add a sample audition feature.
For some apps, it’d be very convenient to select a folder or multiple samples than to add one sample at a time. I also like that in SpaceCraft it remembers where your last file was. A built in search function by Apple as part of this process would be good so you don’t have to navigate through folders (e.g. macOS).
I just tried playing various wav file samples via the Files app that were stored in Dropbox and AudioShare without any issues. Some of the other wav files in folders associated with apps opened up the corresponding apps with varying levels of success. Apple needs to get this right regardless as it’s a very basic function of an OS in my opinion.
The only question will be how he negotiates saving presets with the sample. If I remember correctly it’s not super straightforward to just have the file linked to the original location. I could be wrong though.
I was able to see what you were saying. The sample played back okay the 1st time and the second time the first portion of the sound didn’t play as if it hadn’t gone to the beginning of the sample for playback.

Apple needs to step up their game on basic iOS infrastructure. I submitted feedback on their page so hopefully they’ll address this issue sooner rather than later. Too often Apple drops the ball on basics such as this and developers have to develop work arounds when Apple should have done it right the first time rather than forcing developers to choose between reinventing a functioning wheel or roll along with Apple’s flat tire.
Independent developers care a hell of a lot more about their users than Apple does as they frequently give you direct feedback whereas with Apple it’s submit the feedback and cross your fingers.
