ApeMatrix, SynthMaster One or AUV3 performance glitches?

I opened apeMatrix and begin adding instances of SynthMaster One AU. On the fourth one, the apeM CPU meter jumped to 113%. So I began trying to track down why. I have several questions. Let me start by providing my specs:

IPad Pro 12.9” second gen with 4G RAM and 128G storage, running iOS 11.4.

Here are my questions:

  1. Is there a limit to how many instances of an AU app you can have in one session?
  2. Is there a bug in SynthMaster One? In apeMatrix?
  3. What’s causing the spike? Memory? CPU?

I found a pretty adequate iOS monitoring tool called Lirum Info Lite (free with a paid version):

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lirum-device-info-lite/id591660734?mt=8

It has a real time graph of CPU usage. When I add that 4th one, in the monitor there IS a spike, but then both CPU cores settle down to around 35%, yet apeM is still showing ~113%.

Here are the two screenshots, one of apeMatrix and one of the monitor. Is this too technical for this forum? If anyone has some insight, it might help to answer the above questions.

Should I just settle for assuming that fourth SynthMasterOne overloaded something (apeM? SynthMaster? The iPad?) and back off? I would except that I don’t see anything in the specs of either apeMatrix OR SM1 that says there’s an arbitrary limit. If there IS, using trial and error seems to be a pretty inefficient way to find out.

I can add 5 or more instances of Sunrizer AU and CPU never spikes. I’m leaning toward SynthMasterOne as the source of the problem, but I tried doing this in AUM, and even at 5 instances there’s no CPU spike, so maybe it’s how SM1 and apeMatrix interact.

Thanks!

  • Just a guess here but Sunrizer is going to be way lighter on CPU usage than SynthMaster.

Just because you can use a certain number of instances of one app doesn’t automatically mean you can use the same number of another app. Every app is different. I would say just use three SM1s and move on.

Maybe I’m weird but I rarely want to use more than one instance at a time of any app anyway. Do people really want to use five or six instances of Sunrizer or SM 1 in one song?
Unless this is just an experiment to see what’s going on, that is.

With AU, since each instance can have a different preset, it’s reasonable to use multiples of the same synth, I think. That’s what I actually started off to do before the problem sidetracked me. It didn’t start off as an experiment, but it ended up that way. 😎 ... I love the way multiples of Kronecker sound with different presets! I’ll just leave the question out there to see what develops.

And another point... I’ve found that when you have a problem of using 4 of something that fails, and you back off to 3 of something that seems to work, you’re possibly at the edge of some threshold that can bite you without warning. I hate it when THAT happens. [grin]

  • I have issues too with Synthmaster one and iPad 12,9 pro 2 think the developer said he was looking into it....

AH! That’s a start. Thanks for pointing that out.

Mr. Fancy Pants with his 3 instances of SM1 over here. Meanwhile on the south side of town......

    ..... crickets and red tape!

But in all seriousness there are still some fairly significant bugs with SM1....as pictured above. And on my 1st gen iPad Pro 12” I get CPU spikes of over 600% when connecting IAA though AUM. And there are known issues with Cubasis and SM1 AU freezing and rendering. Give it time. I’m confident KV331 will sort it all out. I mean they named the damn thing SynthMaster. The shoes must fit!
