MOOG minimoog vs Model D │ Can you hear it now?! - haQ attaQ 290
It's time for the title bout! MOOG minimoog vs Model D. Hardware synth legend against it's software counterpart. Both made by one of the most beloved synthesizer manufacturers! So the question is apart from the obvious hardware and software aspect, how similar do they really sound? Can you hear the difference now?
Huge thanks to Kai Aras from NUMERICALaudio who provided me with minimoog footage and sounds. You're a boss!

It’s pretty darned close to my ears (although I did guess right!).
In headphones, the high end was better on the Model D, I thought, which made me think it was the hardware synth. iPad synths can sound really good, especially if you can keep them ITB for the entire recording process.
Hey @jakoB_haQ what is the LED grid thing on your desk around 1:00?
That’s interesting because I guessed correctly as soon as I heard the depth of the low end in the hardware. That said, the Model D app is a fantastic sounding synth, and, in a track, would be virtually indistinguishable from the hardware.
The Model D does sound fantastic. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a YouTube video about 20 minutes long where a (British?) guy was comparing them and the only thing that he did where there was a big difference was some patch where with just a single oscillator on the hardware he could overdrive things to get this phat gnarly (in a good way) distortion. He was able to get pretty close when all 3 of the software Model D oscillators were going but not with just a single one.
Got it right, but didn't really have a preference either way as far as sound goes. Model D is just alright with me.
EDIT: Yeah I made this post last night at midnight and like a dumbass revealed the test results, lol...sorry @jakoB_haQ , don’t ask me about Star Wars or Avengers movies either...I edited the post so you might want to erase the quoted post below. Peace brother...
The levels are slightly different but all & all they're very close. I preferred the the first candidate in these examples but it may be different in other applications (Moog bass lines, etc.).
Main thing is when it's this close, those of us who don't have the dough or the room can experience having a Mini Moog in the toolbox, via the app, with the assurance that it sounds very close to the real deal.
Thanks Jakob, good stuff.
Model D app is just fantastic. By far the best sounding synth for me on iOS and even Nr.2 from all my synths including plug-ins for the kind of vintage/analog and saturated sounds.
The filter section just sounds soooo good and the envelopes really can bite. The feedback (which is no real feedback here) sounds really very good as well.
It can‘t do all kinds of sounds but for what it can do it‘s a giant sweet spot!
Oh no, don’t spoil reveal!

Thats a LED light panel. I got it over 10 years ago. They don’t sell em snymore. I actually have two of them and one is broken. I use the other one in my vlogs and some of my music and live performance videos.
Aw, you’re spoiling the test.
Also the FX included in Model D app would be worth the price of Model D alone (especially since i only payed €5).
The bender and delay in combination are just wonderful and really works great with the character of the synth.
I still don´t find the GUI and workflow the best but the sound would be a 9.7/10 for me where i only see one 9.9/10 in all my tools.
I also like Model D app much more than The Legend f.e.
Again sorry @jakoB_haQ, It was late, I was tired, I fucked up, lol.
I edited my post so you may want to edit the quoted old post in your post above. Sorry for tampering with the scientific method.
Listening on iPad 2017 with Apple earbuds, I really couldn't tell; so I guessed and was wrong!
Great comparison/test and thanks for doing this Jakob. The key difference to me was on the first sample, the attack with it's beef just gave it away. The stepping of harmonics was also an area that gives it away, but gosh, how often will there ever be occasion to compare them in a musical setting. So close!
Great job getting the sounds so spot on Jakob!
Nice test. I preferred the sound of the app in the comparison, which is just as well since it's the only one I can afford
. Although I think for a more scientific test it's better to have more than a 50/50 choice. But what a great recreation the app is which the test shows. I hope they give it a scaleable interface like Model 15 though. Still find it a little small.
