app to playback stems
Hey there,
New on the forum but following since a while, I love it!
I'm assembling a live set and I'd like to use my ipad to playback stems (which goes through a mixer and then to laptop) .
What's the best solution for that?
Also I've seen a good use of an app which Im guessing is doing what I'm looking for, here is a crappy picture but I think some of you may know which app is that, I can't figure out!
thanks
A.

audioshare! but only playback one at a time...
@AudioGus Lovely, thanks you!
Would you suggest any app that can manage more than one stem?
Hmmm, I don't do the live jammy thing so much but maybe Launchpad is your deal? What do you want to do with it all told?
@AudioGus no i got push so im covered on that, mostly i want to launch audio samples and have stems as backup if anything goes wrong with the laptop. Some effect / easy sample manipulation would be good too.
Hmmm, Beatmaker3... ?
Can you not add individual track files to multiple audio tracks inside Cubasis or GB Live Loops and play them back simultaneously?
If you have your stems setup as loops, probably GarageBand or LP-5. Those are only apps I think that have Ableton-style clip launching and you can also launch a group of them as ‘scenes’. LP-5 only plays 5 clips per scene, but you can trigger the scenes through a midi keyboard or midi foot pedal. It’s more of a looper while GB is more like Apple’s answer to the launchpad app with creative FX and you can record your loop performance into the arrangement page like ableton.
What about Samplebot for this ?
Djay pro supports stems format from NI (4stems+stereo track inside m4u) and you can sync two decks for 8tracks (but I suggest you to research in remixing yourself as new perspective limited by tools). You have fx and more. Another chance could be Soda Dj app which let you create your own layout with up to many stems.
In other approach apps like Prime or other arranger-like (I have one in my iPad but travelling at the moment and answering from my iPhone) with playlist and stem (regular) creation from loading wavs and so. Not bells and whistles from manipulating material but more than useful as B plan...
What about LooptunesHD or LooptunesDJ ?
If you're mainly looking for straight playback of stems for backing, I used to use AUM for laptop backup purposes. It was pretty great for that.
I use Beatmaker 3 currently.
I've only switched to Beatmaker 3 because I'm using the sampler for multisampled instrument versions of the stuff that I play live. There's no AUv3 samplers that can do this, and I couldn't do all the same stuff with synths.
Beatmaker 3 is a lot more flexible for live sample business.
BM3-o-rama for this.
thanks everyone with all the very useful suggestions!!
Will have a look at all these options and see what fits best for my need.
At the moment looks like AudioShare and Prime could be the best options tho.
Beatmaker 3 is something I'll instead keep in mind for further applications.
Thanks a lot!
oh also AUM looks like a good fit !
AUM is a good fit for your purposes.
+1 for BeatMaker3 since it can support audio stretching for fitting to certain bpm ,plus disk streaming so you can have multiple long audio samples without worrying about RAM.
If you want to try since it’s free now ,Beat-Machine app , you can have 16 audio samples for immediate triggering
It’s mainly for making beats but it fits to want you want . Only downside is all samples are in one folder but it supports AudioShare, meaning you can import straight to a pad from AudioShare where you can have your samples organized.
If you don’t need to trigger more than one sample ,AudioShare as already mentioned is very good choice .
Worth mentioning RemixLive by MixVibe that includes drag and drop capabilities for iOS 11 .

But it may be confusing as it’s dj oriented, but free so you can check it
Check also Jamtracks (the other app I was trying to remember)
Djay Pro doesn’t do stems, that’s DJ Player Pro. Completely different app.
My blame... yes I was thinking in one and wrote the other. Strange that Djay Pro doesn’t support them anyways...
Thanks for heads up @coolout
Is it possible in AUM to play audio files at different points in time so to fade one into another or everything should start at the same time?
anyone?
Try Live Loops in GarageBand.
Maybe @MichaelRocketship or @JeffChasteen can help as they used it?
For your requirement, look no further - use Live Loops in the free GarageBand. It will meet your needs perfectly to play along with FX like a DJ.
Add a new track, tap the o[ ]o icon on the top left, set it to Live Loops, select empty/New template, tap the grid icon on the bottom left to edit cells, tap on a cell, select Loops in the popup menu, drag and drop a loop/audio/music clip from the popup into a cell. Populate as many cells as you need by dragging items into them.
Note that only one cell on a row plays at any given time. To play multiple cells simultaneously, place them on multiple rows and you can play the entire column of cells simultaneously (tap the play button on the bottom of the column) or play just a cell in the column (tap the cell itself - this will cancel any other cell playing on the same row just as you wanted it - "fade one into another"). You can also play cells randomly however you wish. You can cleverly arrange your audio clips in cells across columns or cells across rows based on how you want to play them - separately or together or randomly.
To add FX, tap the FX button on the toolbar on the top and play FX on the bottom panels.
Live Loops puts the power of a DJ in your hands
HTH
Hey, @Antony , the file player in AUM is tied to the transport, so you can't trigger loops on the fly. At least as far as I could see.
Like I said I was using it for playing back fairly straightforward stems for backing purposes. Due to the flexible audio routing it's good for sending tracks to different places. And each track can have AU fx with parameters linked to MIDI controllers.
This was all pretty prepared stuff, not really suitable for jamming.
What are you specifically wanting to do?
This is what he trying to do - “play audio files at different points in time so to fade one into another or everything should start at the same time”.
GarageBand Live Loops will meet his needs perfectly.
There’s a little circle to the left of the waveform display. Tap that to toggle playback on and off per track in AUM. An empty circle means it’s off, grey filled means it’s on. It respects the Link quantum too, so works well. [edit] (stop is immediate, however)
GB live loops is terrific though! As long as you don’t need multiple outputs.
Ah! I don’t think I ever pressed that wee circle. Handy to know.
Never used Live loops until now. Seems pretty fun and useable!
Hi all, thanks for your help.
Basically for now the idea is to use the ipad as a backup so if my laptop crashes during the set I'm still able to go from a full track to another DJ-style and avoid silence. it would have only a stereo output to go into the mixer.
