New original song, “Jambo”!

edited July 2018 in Creations

My latest original song is a return to instrumental music, a lenghty, fiery flamenco rumba (not to be confused with balroom “rhumba”) with jazzy influences. The main theme is played on the Spanish guitar (my Minyard Martinez Venetian Cutway), as you would expect, and in a loose, almost improvised way, with lots of fast picado (the characteric flamenco way of soloing on the guitar) runs over a typical Im-bVII-bVI-V progression. There is also a funky electric bass and congas besides the rhythm guitars doing the typical rumba rhythm or toque. Everyting was recorded in Auria Pro (iOS) with an Apogee One and MXL mics. The movie I used for the video was “The Outlaw” (1943), debut of the fantastic actress, Jane Russel. Enjoy!

Thank you so much! Cool, and glad you enjoyed it!

  • Really nice groove Dmitri. I'm curious if you use the Apogee One's onboard mic at all wgen you record? You get a very tight "pro" sound which I attribute to your arranging & songwriting talent as well as your studio kit of AuriaPro DAW (the full benefit of the FF plugs, which many who bought the Pro Q2 AUv3 are finding out now), a good interface like the Apogee and the condenser mics you list.

Plus, I assume you record/work with a click but do you build up a rhythm track first & then do vocals/instrumental solos or do you do your overdubs different every time?

    Great track, be cool....

No, the One’s built-in mic is omnidirectional - I have a refrigerator a few feet from where I record, separated by a thin wooden door. Can you imagine the noisy nightmare it would be? I always use the MXL condensers - which are cheap gear but surprisingly handy - because they are cardioid. Thnak you so much, @JRSIV!

  • Wonderfully authentic sounding and excellent guitar skills

    Many thanks! I appreciate it!

  • Beautiful chops, Dimitri. Really smooth and tasty. Not to mention Jane... isn't this the film where Howard Hughes had a special bra engineered for her?

  • I don’t know, but it’s her debut movie. Thank you so much!

  • Caliente blood in your veins! I liked, really!
Paco de Lucia style.😉 Good job.

Interesting that you notice the percussion! In fact, the percussion here is made of three elements: the golpe, which is a fingernail tap at the top of my guitar while playing the rhythm; the palmas, which are claps typical of flamenco; and finally a simple congas Apple loop. Thank you so much.

@theconnactic thank you of your explanations for the details. I appreciate. Maybe an interesting start for a new track, with this kind of rhythm.

  • My pleasure!

  • Smokin' flamenco guitar! Excellent and authentic.

The censors held up the movie for 2 years because of her cleavage. Too risque for that day.
    Pretty tame today.

Keep these great pieces comin' Very inspiring standard of excellence using the tools we all have barring real instrumental talent of course. No App for that... just years of practice!
