Buuuuuut, just dawned on me that most(all?) au don’t record midi in to daws like bm3 via their built in keyboard?

The Ruismakers do, and Model 15/Model D. I think that's it for AU instruments with MIDI OUT. But hey, baby steps! We asked for Apple to allow MIDI out from AU plugins, and they gave it to us. Slowly we're getting there! :)

  • This thread makes me think...it there an AU MIDI app that supplies alternative styles of keyboard? We have MIDI control apps and sequencers like Rosetta, and there are apps like Vatanator, etc. that have pads that trigger things, but why couldn't you have an AU MIDI app that just brings up a pop-window with a MIDI controller on it, and then tie that to another app in AUM. There never has been push for this, since AudioBus and IAA were based around living within individual apps and connecting them by sound - so control was either done with an external controller or whatever keyboard/interface was in your instrument app. With AU, it seems like we are missing a $10 AU MIDI app that just offers every type of control surface and scale configuration imaginable, all in one place.

  • I want a MIDI capable "autoharp" to get my "June Carter" jam on... Roland are you listening?
Kindergarden teachers want to plug-in and add FX. "B-I-N-G-O."

It looks like PolyChord is the best option to get today for $10 but I can see that @Dawdles has moved on from something like the Omnichord like to a improved interface.

Yes, I think this is what we're talking about. It's like buying a MIDI controller in the hardware world so you don't need a keyboard for every synth you own. With a software touch-screen controller, it could be like those Transformers the kids love, all sorts of possibilities in one controller app. A problem with relying on devs to build controllers into standalones is that we might not be that thrilled with what they come up with. For instance, the Omnichord doesn't really look like my cup o' tea, so it wouldn't enhance apps much for me if it became a standard interface element. If it's a plug-in, people can use it or not wherever they want.

  • It looks like you can build interfaces in Lemur for $25 and that there are 5 templates there already: ChordRoy, Hybrid Omnichord controller, nChord, reChorder, Strum.

Do they also cost or can they be tested just owning Lemur?
Is one of them close to the best solution for this requirement?

A developer ideally needs to know what we want before they build it and find out we don't.

Graphical User Interfaces on the iPad are really, really hard to create and many developers don't invent new ones lightly.

Someone might make us an App that's close to what we want that outputs MIDI with MPE.
