Best drum machin

I'm looking for the best drum machine for trance/techno. I thought the obvious choice would be ispark but after researching I saw lot of peeps were having issues with it. Then I though drum perfect pro would be the way to go but it seems it's more for real sounding drums and since I do lot of trance and techno that would not be the answer either, so for my genre what drum app would you suggest? Thank you in advance.

  • Another vote for Seekbeats. Great sounding synth based(as opposed to sample based) drum machine.
The drum machines that come with Gadget are pretty great too.

  • Yes- I agree with the three already mentioned- DM-1 is also worth considering.

  • One more thing.....what is the best app for a filter where I can import a sample/beat from Dropbox?

    Also a cheap sampled 808 is handy - MV08

  • It is always a matter of personal taste of course, but for me Patterning is since day one my "go to" and "never letting me down" drum creator, unrivalled in terms of creative output both on IOS and windows

  • Elastic drums is great!

  • Patterning is my favorite for programming beats. To me it is the most natural and flexible for getting rhythms that flow and evolve; Patterning 2, which will be out on the 27th should take this even farther. It is sample based, so it's dependent on what you put in, but there are tons of great kits available for free and it's really easy to load your own samples.

SeekBeats is my favorite for "foundational" synthesized drums. It is super punchy and warm. It can also go really weird with amazing envelope control and the randomization features are unparalleled. That said, it has a weak MIDI implementation (only note and pattern control, no parameter control) and only 8 patterns per song. And while you can set your patterns to unusual time signatures, you can't set instruments to different timings for polyrhythmic / polymeric stuff. It's also currently running with an older Audiobus SDK that doesn't show other apps in the AB sidebar which makes it harder to jam with.

Elastic Drums is also great for synthesized drums and, with the IAP, can handle samples too. I love ED, but I don't find it quite as punchy as SeekBeats. It works well for the stuff I do, but if you're going for Trance / Techno you might find the sound a bit "relaxed"? (not saying it's bad, just SeekBeats is really punchy). That said, it's the king for weird sounds (especially with the IAPs) with tons of synthesis models and great built-in automation (and MIDI control). One limitation is that ED only has stereo out; both Patterning and SeekBeats can do individual outs for sounds.

Just to be clear, Patterning and Elastic Drums are what I use the most. While I love the sound of SeekBeats, for what I do (live jamming), some of its limitations are a bit too restrictive for me. But if you're recording tracks out this probably isn't a concern and SeekBeats might end up your favorite. My recommendation is to get all 3 (just wait for Patterning 2 to drop)!

  • BeatHawk is super flexible: load w your favorite samples and run.

  • Techno? Then strokemachine would be a good choice.

If you can work out how to use it- I gave up :/

  • Sure - maybe just use grooverider as a drummachine...

  • I just watched the demo of seekbeats by the all so great sound test room who I just love.....seekbeats is amazing it' will be a part of today's purchase....after seeing what it can do it's going to be a game changer for me and in addition I also now have el static drums and patterning which having all 3 will bring my music creation an entirely different level...llthanks guys

  • Ruismaker might be worth a look too

  • I use DM2 & FUTURE DRUMMER. Very satisfied!

iMS-20 is also great for such drum tracks. You can use the kaossilator as you record.

  • if you like techno, why do you try groove rider, some great sounds for you to start with?

@Kühl I was thinking DM2 as well especially in light of the genre trance/techno. It's a 'drum synth' no samples like Elastic Drums but some of the filters & variables can really get some interesting sounds.

This is why I have so many drum apps, each one excels at a particular genre/function. DrumPerfect is the best app for real acoustic drum song/arrangements.

ISpark is another solid app, but Patterning really is the jack of all trades if you only want one drum machine app. While not as deep as DrumPerfect, Patterning can do "songy songs" (Intro-Verse-Chorus) as well as EDM & hiphop. Can't wait for Patterning 2.

  • you can load samples into elastic drums too....mmmm delicious

  • Yeah as many have said Patterning and Elastic Drums get my votes sortof lol

As I no longer use any drum machines. I use either multiple AU drum apps like Ruismaker or just individual samples now.

Patterning 2. Hands down. It can export direct ableton projects and also send multi outs into apps that support it like AUM. Also supports link start/stop. Super useful for production.

I was thinking about Future Drummer- but was concerned at the absence of sample import- are the supplied sounds enough to keep you going?

Absolutely! I like the sounds. But I’m in love with app, so...

Yeah, dm2 is a drum synth with filters, and that’s what I like. If I wanted real drums I have a selection of good drummers to record. But on iOS , for me, it’s important that the rhythm in a piece is done by every tool available, except real drums. Must be my growing up with Kraftwerk.

As you mention Techno, I'm going to throw Waldorf Attack out there...

It's quite a powerhouse. Almost too powerful, but holy shit it can do just about anything. It's just wrapped up in a kinda shitty UI in a lot of ways. The followed the SugarBytes model of just porting mouse/keyboard design to iOS. (Although SB has taken a few steps to improve, but holy hell... Thesys on iPad is a dumpster fire!)

Attack is prob. the deepest percussion-based synth on iOS. Can also use/layer samples. Cool FX routing. Lots of nice distortion options, has a wacko voice synth, can be used as a mono-melodic synth as well... Seekbeats is pretty close, and it's way easier to "find" sounds in Seekbeats, but if you want n'th degree of control of your sounds? Attack kills it.

I'm not sure why it doesn't get more love...

It has 24 (yeah, 24!) voice channels! So you can really do complete compositions with it.
And the mixer view is totally sweet... Again, especially for Techno where it's more about coming up with a good groove that plays with interesting frequencies and emergent rhythms as voices play off each other...

I'm talking about "proper" German/Berghain style techno here... EDM-ish Techno is still totally possible with Attack, but it seems to me just about perfect for doing solid, banging, distortion-loving techno.

Yea, it's missing "new" stuff like Link, and MIDI control input would be sweet for the mixer, but it does have IAA so you can use it in AUM. In AUM, when you route it through a few things like Rough Rider, Maxima, EOS, etc. it really could be used to build an entire Techno album.

*** And, as a BONUS feature that you can get for free... It has just about the BEST manual on percussion synthesis I've ever read. Go here: https://waldorfmusic.com/downloads/ipadAttack/attack_ios_manual.pdf and go to page 53... It's not Attack specfic. It's just a really well written general synthesis doc on it's own.***
