Getting back user data from a backup?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, ie. that I'm screwed...

But, I thought I'd see if anyone knew of any tricks I hadn't discovered.

I've got a portfolio app that I don't use that often, but I've had it on my iPads for years now. Every time I upgraded an iPad or had to restore from backup... all of my user data, galleries of images and video migrated over.

Yesterday the app I use "Minimal Folio" had an update that made it Universal. After I updated, it completely hosed my user data, galleries, etc.

So, because it has a way to sync a backup on Dropbox.. and I wasn't sure if I'd ever made a backup (I hadn't) it created an empty backup and then sync'd my iPad to it... meaning, ALL of my user data is gone. About 10 years worth I think. Most of it I have duplicates of spread out, but some of it I don't think I have a back up of.

I thought that when it saw I didn't have a dropbox backup of it, it would've told me that... instead of making an empty one without user data, then syncing to zero user data.

Here's the thing... I haven't added anything to this portfolio app since my last iPad backup. So, if I restored my iPad from backup, I'm pretty sure I'd get it all back. But, I'd lose everything I've added to my iPad since my last backup in February.

Is there any way or trick to restore just the user data from an iPad backup? (I back up to hard drive, not to iCloud)

Or, if I do a refresh backup now... then restore from my last February backup to get my user data from then back on the iPad... then, restore again from the new backup, will that basically write over the data from February that I just restored and I'm back to square one?

It's not catastrophic, but I have some editing videos I made in South Africa that I don't seem to have a backup of. All I've got is the old FinalCutPro project file, but evidently it's so old that my current install of FCPX won't recognize it.

  • Or, wait... I could do a fresh backup... then a restore from my old backup to get my portfolio data back... export and sync the portfolio data to dropbox... restore to my current fresh backup, then reimport the exported backup of my portfolio data from dropbox.

That would likely work, but that's a lot of work... geez... there's got to be a better way to do this.
