USB thumb drive

How do I get my thumb drive to work so I can store samples, loops and my recorded files? I have limited space on my iPad so I need to figure this out

  • Do you have one of these new "lightning connector" USB thumb drives? What size? Does the "Files" app show the contents of the drive and allow you to move files there.

  • Yes I have the lightning connector but I have it hooked up to a powered USB hub.....I'm on ios9 so I don't have the files app.

  • If it’s just a standard USB drive then you can only import photos with it hooked up to the lightening connector as far as I know. There are a couple of ways to make it possible:

    • hook it up to a desktop PC, then share the drive and access it from an app like File Browser or Documents by Readle.
    • hook it up to a desktop PC, fire up the wifi server in AudioShare, then copy the files up to it.
    • hook it up to something like a HooToo Travel Router, which is basically a wifi access point that you can hook USB drives up to and comes with an app that will let you copy the files.
    • get one of the new “lightening connector” USB thumb drives maybe? (Haven’t looked into this one)
  • The SanDisk iXpand drives are good, though the companion app you need to use them with is horrible, and the drive of course ties up the Lightning port so you can't connect anything else. The app won't copy multiple files at a time, so you need to move them into GoodReader or similar to zip and unzip. There are also wireless drives like the SanDisk iConnect range, which are more versatile (you're not limited to using them with the proprietary app) but do need to be kept charged.

  • On this page you'll find handy external storage devices for your iPad: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ipad/ipad-faq/best-external-storage-for-ipad-default-ipad-storage.html

I don't have one myself but that WD My Passport Wireless Pro seems to me a very handy one: https://wdc.com/products/portable-storage/my-passport-wireless-pro.html

  • Hi again @therockalternative, Again iTunes is the answer to your problem, you don’t need a thumb drive.. by copying samples folders from apps like Auria, Cubasis, AudioShare etc to a folder on your desktop via iTunes file sharing.. you can then delete all samples from these apps thus freeing up some space and with all your samples safe on your desktop.
It’s free and it’s easy once you know how.

  • iTunes may work for backup and archiving, but is very inconvenient to exchange data on the fly (like loading a set of samples into whatever groovebox app, even more if those samples are spread over more than one folder)
If mobility isn't required a NAS is worth considering, even at slightly higher expense and a bit of extra time to setup.
Suppliers like Synolgie offer companion apps (free of charge) for either file or personal cloud management. I only used manual transfers, but there's an option to set autosync in one direction, which should transfer the content of selected file locations on the iPad automatically to the drive, but don't autosync in the other direction (which would flood the iPad).

This seems to me an extremely cumbersome and time wasting method, which seems to be a big hassle and workflow killing, even if you find something that might work, and the speeds will of course be much slower than the internal flash memory.

The solution in my opinion, which may not be very helpful to you, is to always buy an iPad with enough internal storage space on it for your needs.

I wish I had the financial means to buy a new one but financially it's just not an option for me.....I just I could use my external drive like I did when I was recording on my pc
