Which Filter App? WOW / Volcano / Filterstation

Getting my head into filter apps just now and wondering how these compare;

Sugar Bytes WOW
FabFilter Volcano
Audio Damage Filterstation

These 3 seem to be the cream of the filter FX crop on iOS, but maybe there are others?

Thoughts, opinions, recommendations?

Btw I’m assuming (rightly or wrongly) that Wow and Volcano will be getting the AUv3 treatment at some stage...

im guessing Drambo will have filters, that should be in the mix not before too long.

edit: i will need the Dev to confirm AUFX actually!

  • I like WOW and have a secret soft spot for Moog Filtration. Both are multi effects (WOW has distortion and FIltatron has delay).

  • Filterstation is pretty good and easy to use. ApeFilter is great but can get out of control easily - which can be good or bad depending.

Volcano has the best-sounding filters, and a wide variety of different charactered filters. It's drag and drop modulation makes it easier than the others as well. As usual, Fabfilter wins.

I love AD, but Filterstation is on the low end of their effects for me...just don't feel the same DSP quality is there when compared to their other stuff.

  • Know your Mouse on Mars songs? Like Autoditacker? WoW squeals and burbles like a Sherman Filterbank. Love it.

  • Which ones are AU? Filterstation is fully automatable. Send an LFO to any parameter. I don't know about the other apps you mentioned.

  • Volcano is easily automatable, you can also send LFOs to all parameters. WoW is a bit too crazy and glitchy for me, and I'm not familiar with Filterstation, but Volcano is easy to use and has a range of different filters you can apply, it can create everything from basic sweeps and wah effects to crazy alien bleeping. Maybe wait for the AUv3 release though.

  • Thanks folks, really appreciate the input

Been meaning to check out apefilter...

Completely forgot about Apefilter - and I actually already own a copy! I have used it more as a precision EQ and for its spectrum analyser, maybe a revisit is in order (it’s AUv3 after all)

Interesting - never investigated the Moog, been around a long time I see. Tbh though one of my requirements is AUv3 support
What is it about WOW that does it for you?

Apefilter and WOW sound like they are the most sound manglish of the lot (right enough Apefilter has ripped my ear off a couple of times!)

Volcano sounds high quality and versatile (as you’d expect from FF) - being so powerful though I wonder how much cpu it will chomp as an AUv3

That is interesting, I wonder why that is? Curious to hear if others have the same perception

Same for both — they’re rock solid in stability, low on CPU use and sound great. I love the distortions in WOW and the filter in Filtatron is seriously good sounding to me in that ‘classic’ kind of way.

FabFilter and Sugar Bytes are 2 of my favourite iOS developers.

But in this case, I frefer “Volcano 2” over “WOW2”. The interface may have a lot/something to do with it. But ability is also a factor, Love FFs modulation and it’s drag n drop approach.

Have both in Auria Pro, and would 99.999% of the time reach for Volcano 2. I think I reach for WOW2 (00.001%) just to have a play.

Don’t get me wrong thought, WOW2 is good and has some nice presets too ...

You know what, just go to the stores and buy everything! (You most likely will eventually anyway!)
This is if you can’t wait for the AUv3 versions. And you have Auria/Pro.

Bonus: If you buy WOW2 (or Turnado) in the AppStore, it will show up in Auria/Pro (If you have Auria), and can be used as multiple instances within it. Volcano 2 does this (multiple) naturally within Auria/Pro.

  • Did you check out DubFilter?

It honestly might be bias simply because the filters are taking away frequencies from the full spectrum of sound. I'd never considered that. But even with that said, I don't like their saturation effect in Filterstation and their filters don't have the distinct flavors of the Fab

The raw and tube filters in the Fab are sublime.

  • Filterstation sounds good on Bass sounds smooths them out
WOW i use in Auria Pro behind FabFilter Saturn I like the LOW pass and grimy artifacts on the default setting.
Volcano I don't think I have but its a FabFilter and might be coming out as an AUV3 soon- WAIT

Yeah that’s a free one isn’t it (and AUv3). Tried it ages ago but tbh didn’t really get on with it. Might be worth a revisit though, I’ve certainly learned a thing or two since then.

Another one I’ve heard of (from reading around) is Blamsoft F-16 - seems more basic than the others but maybe decent? It’s AUv3 and inexpensive
