Simulating Electric Guitar
Was thinking about this earlier today: what's the best way to simulate electric guitar on iOS? I'm guessing Guitarism into JamUp or AmpKit.
Can Guitarism simulate palm muting?
Comments
Guitarism into JamUp or AmpKit (or any other good ampsim ie BIAS, etc) is my main method for chords. Muting works pretty well too!
Fretless Guitar or Thumbjam are great for lead (again, using an ampsim).
Fretless Bass works great for bass (again, using an ampsim)
One trick that is really cool, is that you can use midi and Sampletank or BS-16i (with guitar soundfonts), and have different guitar-based instruments (ie Gibson LP, Fender, acoustic, 12 string, etc). Using Guitarism's 4play IAP, it is really easy to do this.
Also, FYI, Rhism is working on an IAP instrument pack for Guitarism that will include many of these built straight into Guitarism. I'm a beta tester, and the sound is coming along nicely!!! :-)
I like using Thumbjam through BIAS. Not just for guitar, but for all sorts of cool sounds.
Sounds like Guitarism is the way to go.
I'm not trying to build entire rock songs — just trying to add some realistic sounding guitar crunch here and there, and maybe some atmospheric acoustic strumming with chorus and whatnot.
I guess what I really need to do is decide between AmpKit and JamUp. I'll download the free versions to test them, but recommendations for one or the other are appreciated.
The whole reason I designed Jam Maestro was because I wanted guitar crunch. Look up 'Jam Maestro Lite' which is free and you can test the sound yourself and see if its right.
For crunch I really like the default "Lead" sound on AmpKit's free version (go into the amp settings and switch "Clean" to "Lead"). I used that with guitarism on the distorted guitar track in the All Along The Watchtower iOS cover I did with Jesse and Hans some time back.
And yes, some awesome sound options coming soon But MIDI is a great alternative.
Jam Maestro is a powerhouse app with a bunch of awesome sound options and includes bass and drums. Definitely check that free version out!
Thanks @Rhism
(ps that all along the watchtower cover is awesome!!)
Geo Synth is also really good for guitar emulation, I like to use it as a MIDI controller driving either a Sampletank or BS16i with a Soundfont/sample of a clean Les Paul (Sampletank comes with an OK Les Paul, and there are also some free LP soundfonts at Hammer Sounds), and then route through BIAS or Amplitube.
@Rhism: nice cover and example of what can be done with virtual instruments on iOS. The only thing that lets it down is Garageband, the drums in particular could have done with some nicer processing, they sound a bit dull and dry in the mix. You should remix this in Auria, it would sound amazing.
I'd say get both Guitarism, for rhythm guitar, and iFretless Guitar for solo/lead. Jam Maestro has, beside all else, the option of being able to enter tabs which can also be very useful of course.
As for amp sim, Jamup has the great advantage of being compatible with BIAS, currently the best amp sim IMHO. You can design your own amp in BIAS and import it into Jamup for use with effects.
@richardyot Thanks, yep a few folks have suggested remixing in Auria Mixing isn't really my area of expertise but should look into it...
Did my best here with ThumbJam (solos) SoundPrism (chords) through JamUp. Not the best mix, and I didn't loop it quite right, but pretty convincing to me and I'm no guitar player. Listen here:
@JamMaestro and @Rhism both your apps are great I've got both! And iFretless Guitar. I recently stumbled on running guitars from various apps on the same midi controller / channel thru AudioBus to JamUp gives a nice chorus, thickening effect.
@audiblevideo That's a good sound, you should do more with it.
And I like the idea of a driving grove.
