I would love to have an option to skip empty layers. When working with drum samples I might have i.e. 5 bassdrum samples and only three Tom samples.

    @VirSyn
Thanks for answering this. I work around it for now by placing the same sample in multiple layers for the zones med from fewer samples.

I also wonder if it is possible to group zones across layers. Say I have a cymbal sample on C4, round robin across six layers. If it is too loud -do I have to go into every layer and adjust the volume for each sample?

    @VirSyn
Would appreciate if you share your thoghts on this.

    One more thing...
It is so easy to get all focused on technical questions. And forget to thank you for this fantastic app. This is the one thing I´ve been wanting the most for ios for years, and now we have it! A great, great sampler. Thank you!

Has anybody already done some complex instrument on iPhone with this app? Not sure I will be able to do multisamples patches on my 7 Plus...

@VirSyn Zoom is not enough powerful IMO, and when zooming in, it’s not possible to use handles to change velocity and note range, seems like a bug.

Yes, it's a bug and it's already fixed here. Maybe didn't seen it lately because the automap function when selecting multiple sample files worked so well i didn't needed the handles...

Grouping of Zones across layers is not possible. The Layers are thought to be the grouping element for editing Zones. But i see the problem and maybe shifting the round robin to the Zone maybe a solution. Have to think more about this whole problematic though.

What’s the good strategy for naming files for facilitate automap (notes/range and velocity)?

Here a couple of examples to give the automap the needed infos for three use cases:

    1) only note values

    basename_c1.wav
    basename_e1.wav
    basename_g1.wav
    ...

Automap will will fill the gaps in between which you can see by the graphics animation during import.

    2) note and velocity:

    basename_c1_p.wav ( p for "piano" )
    basename_c1_f.wav ( f for "forte" )
    ....

Automap looks for the following words for ascending velocities: ppp, pp, p, mf, f, ff, fff
    and then fill the gaps...

    3) note range ( and velocity )

basename_c1_g1.wav lower key is c1 and upper key is g1

can be of course combined with velocity above, but note that automap anyway always try to fill the gaps.
And it's better to always start with a fresh new layer without zones already lying around.

Now, what’s the best workflow strategy to sample an instrument (using Ableton Live on laptop) with 4 or 5 velocity zones per note and note off samples? I was thinking making a long midi clip with all notes and then trim/export all notes as audio. That should take a while.....

Yes it’s for bass note on release. Thanks you.

  • What playback modes does the app have? can somebody make a screenshot of that page in the AudioLayer app?

For example the Caustic pcm synth has 6:
    1. Play once
    2. Note on/off
    3. Loop forward
    4. Loop forward-back
    5. Intro + Loop-Fwd
    6. Intro +Loop FwdBack

Well, I've sampled an acoustic bass using my laptop with a long midi clip rendered to a long audio file, with bass notes in fourth ranges with three velocity zones, with key downs and releases. Then I used Audioshare for trimming and naming everything, resulting in 42 samples. AudioLayer automap import just works PERFECTLY!! It has taken me 2H30 to do that, so it's long process!!! But it's worth it, I'm pretty happy with that iPhone bass which sounds pretty much like its laptop counterpart!!

@VirSyn Now just a little issue for me: how do you set samples layer on key release? I've imported all bass release sounds in layer 2, and have choosen "key release", but there is no sound when I release my keybaord keys. No issues when there are set on "key down". Layer 1 is of course for normal bass notes. Perhaps related to iPhone version? Thanks in advance for help :)

  • After this bass instrument is working we need to perfect sharing it wit idiots.i will volunteer to idiot proof loading.

Hmmm, just tried it and it seems to be broken. Will be fixed with the next update, sorry.

    3. Loop forward
    4. Loop forward-back
    5. Intro + Loop-Fwd
    6. Intro +Loop FwdBack

This are the equivalents in AudioLayer:

    1) Play once is "One shot" ( in addition to "Level envelope off" available with 1.0.2 )
    2) Note On/Off is "One Shot"
    3) Loop forward is loop mode "normal"
    4) Loop forward-back is "alternate"

5/6) The Intro is made with "Sample start": here you define the first sample to be played giving you a variable intro point.

In addition AudioLayer has release loop mode to define what happens after key release.

And with version 1.0.2 you can reverse the complete sample and apply any of the above to the reversed sample!

  • @SlowwFloww said:

Especially the 'middle window'(Stitched Loop) is super handy for accurately setting loop the loop point, something I miss in AudioLayer!

And to make it even easier on a touch screen "<<< << < & > >> >>>" buttons to move handles with sample precision (1, 10 and 100 samples with a repeat option when held down).

@Virsyn please consider adding assistive tools like in the above image to make looping easier.

    Thanks in Advance!

Oops any idea when approximately next update will come? My bass cries for its release notes lol. Thanks.

Also I’ve found while loading loops in AudioLayer that they are played at different tempo and pitched differently when switching between 44.1 and 48 kHz in AUM. Also, when playing those 2 bars loops there is kind of chorus effect each time they are triggered again if individual loops are not set to a group instead of none.

Not that I've seen, it does have a 'loop cross fade' though but it's not suitable for all types of looped sounds.
I love to loop single cycle waves and other looped sound so the extended zoom feature of Caustic is really handy to have.

No, currently not. By default loop crossfading is active and therefore you have no clicks regardless where the loop points are, but it is of course a handy function if working without crossfade. But i fear the way i plan to implement it will make @Samu cry... It will use our sub sample feature to get you exact to where the real crossings is in the time axis. The crossing is usually not exactly at the quantised time intervals of the samples but somewhere in between.
Maybe i can calm him down by telling him that i already have a good idea how to edit the loop points together in a comfortable way...

Good luck! But there are no 'samples in-between samples'(ie. sub samples) unless the original is heavily 'oversampled' and the loop points are set in the over-sampled waveform instead of the source...

    @VirSyn
hello, and congrats on the fine app.. lots of nice stuff here .. the auto mapping choices are great.. round robin and lfo’s all welcome
on first dabbling the most obvious thing I personally would have most use of that isn’t there already.. is some Au automation for ‘some’ of the parameters..
even if it was only at instrument level ( doing this for layers AND zones might be a complex headache both for the coder AND in the end possibly for the end user )
But ... at the instrument level it would be very useful to me and maybe others if , for instance, the filter cut off and resonance, the LFO rate for filter, pitch and level,
the panning ( though i appreciate that can usually be done in the DAW of choice so not so important )
and possibly , if you are inclined, and because they are not so easy to manipulate by any other method.. the Effects parameters.
Sample loop point ( or at least start point ) would be the icing on the cake , but with all those zones ‘n’ layers might not be possible except if the user sticks to simple one sample, one zone instruments for that to happen.
I know some of these are available in the midi mapping and there is a sort of workaround assigning things to the mod wheel.. but there is only one of those and Au automation is so much quicker and intuitive generally... maybe, if you have time, rather than us wait for the manual, you could put the midi cc mapping up here on the forum as a post??
I much appreciate your attention and thanks once again for bringing this instrument to IOS for us to enjoy.

  • @VirSyn hello there.i am missing something or this is a bug?when I choose audiolayer as an au in cubasis and create an instrument, after I record I can’t seem to be able to change the note velocity as it stays the same.please have a look at this video.

I think you need to increase the Vel: % under the Level Tab (it's on the bottom left) in order for the instrument, layer or zone to respond to velocity. I've set mine to about 50%.

    hi there.
great to hear that there is still some development to come on the sample edit screen.
and sorry this is kind of more requests.
so... why no crossfade available in the alternate/ping=pong loop? it seems just as necessary there as in the normal looping.. as it is I can’t get a click free alt loop , especially when looping synthetic waveforms..
and whilst on the subject, for myself, it would be incredibly helpful to have a small micro fade handle at the end of the sample, when using the ‘release to end’ function I get small clicks even on a faded sample and after going in and finding a zero point for the end..
the same would be cool for the very start of the sample ( but perhaps not as pressing due to envelope abilities ).
I feel sure this must have been discussed in this thread earlier.. but its a long discussion/thread so forgive me for any repetition.

  • Aha! Thanks, @Samu. That just unlocked one of the bigger mysteries that has been vexing me over the last couple days. So, I take it the velocity can be set differently per layer/zone by setting the "scope" correctly? I have to admit that I'm also still trying to wrap my head around the scope on each of the tabs. Need to spend some time this weekend sussing that out.

    No worries...

Just hoping @VirSyn will add vertical velocity to the onscreen keyboard making it easier to preview the way velocity affects the patch. Then again using it a host such as Cubasis that already provides a vertical velocity keyboard I suppose it's quite far down in the priority list...

  • @VirSyn

ok, more reportage on the AudioLayer app.
I am getting quite noticable latency when playing the Au plug version in Cubasis.
this is on an ipad pro 10.5” with ios 11 installed.. and with Cubasis buffer latency set to ultra low. no change when setting it to just ‘low’
there is distinct lag between key press and sound.. the stand alone AudioLayer using the same preset reacts instantaneously and the sample is cropped with no gap at the start.
    is anyone else noticing this?
