Dissecting Uncle Floyd: Anatomy of a Funk Groove - Daveypoo, The Mobile Music Mistrel

In this video I break down the groove from my latest release with Doug Woods & Colin Powell, Lily's Gone Mad. This video is less iPad/iOS specific and more about how to build your own funk groove.

This is a great breakdown - I’m not particularly into funk but I found some of the ideas and techniques in this really interesting. Thanks for putting it together. And I’d love a code for Lily’s Gone Mad to add to my collection of Doug and Colin’s work!

  • Yummy! Loving this video already at the start

  • Thanks for watching, guys - I hope that it gives you some new ideas.

    @PhilW I messaged you.

Nothing as good as you, I guarantee! :lol
Edit: and as I mentioned on youtube, I'm experimenting a new workflow to break the creative blocks

Ah, didn't realize that was you. I messaged you here with your code ;)

    I expect a full review!

  • This is good. Already ordered the book you referenced.

  • Love it....

It's a brilliant book. Make sure that you have recordings of the original tunes to refer to as well so you can hear the parts in their original context and as played.

If you need suggestions for other bands/music to listen to, let me know.

  • @Daveypoo I went and a whole gig from Tower O Power on YT after watching your video, man them boys are super tight.

We have also just started work on the next “Lily” album too😎

Tower of Power are a big deal here since they're from where I live. Bands like TOP and Sly & The Family Stone were among the reasons I moved to the SF Bay Area in the first place. I saw TOP live about 20 years ago when I was in college and they tore the roof off the joint.

Another band you should check out (if you don't know them already) is The Meters. I got to do a gig with their drummer ages ago and it was a tutorial in all things funky.

    The Meters:

And one last one (I can't help myself) - here's a hidden gem by The Rascals, of all people:

  • Love funk. Saw Tower Of Power at the Shrine Theater back in the day. I would love a code for “Lilly.” Thanks Daveypoo.

    Just messaged you.

There really is no other band doing what TOP is doing. The horn section moonlights on a load of other artists' recordings as they have a reputation of their own. David Garibaldi is one of my all-time favorite funk drummers:

He keeps sixteenth-note ghost notes going on the snare for almost the entire length of this tune (no easy feat):

But his syncopation in Oakland Stoke is mind-melting:

  • Serious drummer. Thank you for the TOP music, and the tips in your video. I appreciate the code.
